“Top Notch”

My partner and I stayed at this hotel whilst we were visiting Canberra. While we have family in the city, we are planning our wedding so we thought it was a great opportunity to stay in a couple of hotels so we can recommend them to our guests.

We had an outstanding stay at this hotel.

We spent a bit of time in reception waiting for our room to be ready (we were early). It's a lovely open space with lovely infused water, lollies and newspapers to enjoy on very comfortable seating. The reception staff are also lovely. I was particularly impressed with Matthew who was the perfect combination of welcoming and professional.

The room itself was stunning. It was very clean and modern. Unlike some other modern hotels, it did not look good and feel cheap. It felt like thought went into everything and that there were quality items throughout. The kitchen was well-stocked with good wares. The bathroom was also cleverly laid out. The shampoos/soaps, etc. were also exceptional. (they sell full-sized containers in reception and for the first time I was tempted to buy them) The shower had good water pressure. The bed, duvet and pillows were super comfy. I did NOT want to leave.

The location was great - a short (very short) stroll to Manuka and Kingston. There was parking on site ($10/day).

I can see why this hotel is rated as the best hotel in Canberra. The staff do an amazing job and gave us a great stay.

Room Tip: We had room 508 which has views to Parliament and the cricket grounds. It also faces westward which...

The East Hotel is a hybrid mix of an modern serviced apartment complex with elements of a personalised traditional hotel. The developers have created this complex with caution that if it eventually failed as a hotel ( easy in australia, due to the high wages and apathetic travellers) that they could convert it back to a residential complex. Hence those expected the service and facilities of a 4.5-5 star hotel will be left questioning their hotel experience.
Where this hotel differentiates itself from the numerous mediocre and ageing serviced apartment complexes that treat you as a passing piece of human cattle that provides a cash flow to the lazy management and owners to justify their existence is the service by front desk staff, the clean and hygienic atmosphere for a fairly busy hotel, its new and architectural modern feeling and a provision of fairly decent on-site food option that offers a well stocked wine list and extensive gin and scotch bar.
The other positives of the hotel apartment complex is the location in the upmarket area of Manuka precinct which incorporates the numerous restaurant options for various tastes and budgets, including the area of Kingston which is all a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel. The highlights would include the refreshing rustic french farm inspired bakery in Kingston called the "Silo Bakery" where you can indulge in french farm style breads and numerous quality ingredients such as Roqufert Cheese, french sausages and oysters while chasing it with selected quality wines by the glass. Not for the family though as there is not a sausage roll or meat pie in sight, so try next door for decent wood fire pizza. Other food highlights in the area include the "the jewel of india" for a superior quality indian meal and the highly acclaimed "Ottoman" for a turkish food that is more than just a lamb kebab served with dips! For the budget minded, you have a very good value italian bistro style placed Pappa Pastas just across the road at the old school wood panelled Kingston Pub/Hotel which is a great place to have a beer and watch the ball games.
The location also offers highlights to those who are not interested in food and wine, with easy access to Manuka Stadium, strolling the upscale shops of Manuka, riding a bike along to the waters edge of Kingston and then on to the magnificent bike circuits of Canberra while taking in the warm autumn leaf colours of the european trees planted on every street. The location is in easy reach of a short drive to all the major attractions like most other places in the Canberra CBD area.
The hotel offers a morning breakfast self-serve that is targeted to families with a basic selection of hot and cold options which can get very busy in peak school holidays with an invasion of young kids jumping on the booth style seatings. There are much better options nearby for the travellers that have more time and prefer to be served their meal rather than line up, wait for the food to be refilled by the scarce over worked staff who are doing their best to accommodate the hungry hordes needs.
At night the independently operated "Ox" restaurant converts from a breakfast den to a intimate low lit restaurant whose main speciality is the serviing of french country style rotisserie food of roast chicken and pork and a few other small sharing plates. The service was passable for australian standards, the wine selection is very good but the food was average with a chicken not being much better than a BBQ chicken bought for $10 up the road from Coles served with just one selection of vegetable that being a corn all for $34, the pork was not much better either with a fatty piece of pork tricked up with crackling a smear of apple sauce. The highlight would be directed towards the well stocked bar which has a huge collection of Gin and Scotch, but then this is a delight to a very select audience only.
Other gripes with this hotel is the cost of the place, especially with the extra charges around the place; ready; $5 to get your room service delivered to your room. Wow...thats a new scam invented by the industry. I have never seen that one before. Credit card charges on Visa/Mastercard ( who pays their end bill in cash these days? only criminals on the run and gamblers) , charges to use the gym, charges to use the car park ( decent access though), no pool, charges for small bottled water that was bought for $0.40 a bottle ( other 5 stars would give this free, especially if you paying $420 per night for a family suite). I think most of these charges, if necessary should be included in your nightly rate so the management does not make look them look greedy. Greed is not "cool" as the marketing of hotel implies. Value is "cool".
Where the Hotel fails in my eyes is that it tries too hard to be Uber Cool, which makes it 'uncool' There are numerous small coaster photos telling you that they are the Hotel for fashion, for film for art, that they are the award winners of the best new hotels with their manager/owners displaying their faces holding awards, starved models staring at you in the lobby art, old french kids bike which kids fire up riding around in the lobby at a blistering lap speeds. I dont need to be told that "East" is a "cool place" whose ideas have been poached from other boutique international hotels in asia.
Overall the Hotel is a welcomed relief for lodging in Canberra as its new and well located but it is expensive with many little hidden charges that mount up in the end that become annoying for a upmarket serviced apartment complex parading as a "trendy boutique hotel". For other options try Hotel Realm nearby for a comparison.

Who is it for? Families with kids ( expensive but nicer option, better going to Aria which is 40% cheaper, not well located but all the same when you have a car) , Food oriented travellers, Business & Government travellers looking to escape the grasp of the major hotel chains.

We stayed at the East Hotel with our two children (ages 5 & 3) and my mother and father in law (visiting from England). We booked interconnecting rooms which worked really well. The hotel is very stylish and comfortable. The beds/pillows are especially comfortable! Upon arrival, the check in process was very easy and quick and the kids (and I) loved the lollies in reception. We were very impressed with our rooms and the added bonus of free chocolate, popcorn and wine!

During our stay we had a minor complaint of the room smelling like cigarette smoke from a previous customer. The hotel manager went straight into action and the issue was resolved quickly and easily.

My daughter had an accident during our stay which resulted in her cutting her eye/eyebrow. After placing a call to reception, the hotel manager was at our door within minutes, with first aid. After helping us with first aid, he then directed us to the nearest hospital for further treatment. We felt his service was fantastic, even bringing up extra chocolates for the kids on one of his visits to our room. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the staff which made us feel very relaxed and comfortable.

The location of the hotel is great too - really easy to find and get around to tourist destinations. But also great if you want to stay local and enjoy local shops/restaurants.

Thank you East Hotel for a lovely experience. We will definitely stay here again next time we are in Canberra.

We have enjoyed our stay at East. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. Some previous reviewers noted that the king beds were singles put together - ours was also but you wouldn't notice due to the luxurious mattress topper. There is a pillow menu and 'I forgot it' items available. The front of house staff are super friendly and attentive. Housekeeping do a good job (though my super attention to detail saw a couple of small things like hairs on the spare blanket in the cupboard, a dirty container in the cupboard and a previous guest's tub of melted icecream left in the fridge). The $10 per day underground parking has been well worth the money (well-lit, clean & fast lifts straight to our room). The spa bath, spacious shower and pleasant shower head have been nice to come back to at night. There is no on-site pool but Manuka historic public pool is a short walk away. However, Manuka pool is shut due to the colder season. There are free push bikes available for travelling around on. There are also a couple of electric bikes available for $45 for 4 hours.

The room service and breakfast options leave something to be desired (independent restaurant operating within East). We pre-booked the full buffet option for breakfast on our first morning. There were not many options available (compared to similarly priced and rated accommodation we have stayed at) and those that were meant to be there had ran out or had been consumed and not replaced yet. We left, got a refund (which was no problem and the staff were friendly about it) and went elsewhere. There is a $5 delivery fee for room service.

This hotel is overall well managed and modern which has made for a pleasant stay. The pops of colour and artworks in the rooms make the rooms inviting. We would stay here again.

What a great hotel! Such a refreshing change to the standard chains. The uniqueness starts as soon as you walk in the door - a modern, funky interior with jars of sweets on offer and an efficient reception.
As a family of 4 we stayed in a one bedroom apartment with a fold our sofa and fold away bed. The apartment is very well appointed with a fully functioning kitchen and nespresso machine.
The location is excellent - positioned centrally between the great neighbourhoods for eating and shopping of Manuka and Kingston.
We'll be back!

From the moment I checked in to the moment I checked out I was impressed not just with the comfortable, roomy hotel room, its facilities, food, and atmosphere, but also its wonderful friendly and helpful staff (often this makes or breaks the overall hotel experience). The accommodation was first rate, very well appointed and nicely decorated, I was left wondering what happened to the .5 star that should have been added to the 4.5 star rating. The complimentary newspapers and magazines, free bicycle hire (missed out, booked too late!), free internet – all little touches that added up to a great stay away from home. I can understand why this hotel would be popular for small meetings and functions, the vibe is great.

Thank you very much for the opportunity to stay at the East Hotel. I will be certainly be back for more, and will recommend your hotel for personal stays and business use alike without hesitation.

The East Hotel in Canberra provides high quality and spacious accommodation in an excellent location. We were very impressed with the space of our 1 bedroom apartment and the quality of the furnishings. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was modern, clean and well appointed. The Kitchen was a welcome addition and again provided high quality appliances and equipment. We enjoyed a lovely dinner with friends in the restaurant and overall had a most enjoyable stay. You can walk to the Manuka shopping precinct or to the Kingston shopping area and if you want a pub meal there is a good hotel right across the road. A great spot to stay in Canberra and highly recommended.
