We stayed one night at the East Hotel in an East studio. Plenty space, great bed, and all new and modern, design-ish in all matters. Kitchenette was well stocked. Nespresso machine with lots of espresso pods. Great! Could easily have stayed for a longer time, but a las, we were only on our way through this time.

The hotels has bikes (and bicycle helmets - hurrah!) that they lend out. Beaut way to explore leisurely on your own. The bikes were extremely comfortable!

Just down the street there are plenty of little shops and restaurants where you can grab a meal at night. The hotel is a fair way out from the city centre (Civic area), though.

The only negative thing is that there isn't really a door closing the bathroom / toilet from the rest of the room. The shower and the toilet have doors towards the sink-area of the bathroom, but there is no door from the bathroom to the kitchenette/room. Not necessarily a problem, but neat to know if you're travelling with someone you don't know that well.

The swimming pool is a public pool approximately 4-500 meters walk away. Parking is 10 dollars a night in the car park with elevators directly to your floor. Nice and easy.

It is not too often that you stay somewhere and don't have a little gripe about something, the stay at this hotel however was a pure pleasure, from the checkin, to the great cafe next to reception, to the extremely courteous staff or the perfect room, well done guys, you have the formula perfect.

This hotel was fantastic. We had a two bedroom suite with a kids cubby and our kids absolutely loved it. There was an x-box, small tables for them to draw at and beanbags for them. Even the pictures on the wall were aimed at kids. In the next room was a very comfortable bed in a separate bedroom and then a separate living space with a pull out sofa and a kitchen that was well equipped. The room was very spacious and we loved the art deco furniture. My mum and aunty also had a room which was very similar only a one bedroom. I thought that the size of the hotel rooms were pretty good. The only issue we had was that when the one bedroom was serviced they often would not restock the washing powder or bathroom amenities such as shampoo or soap. I am not sure why our room was restocked but theres wasn't.
This hotel had a very relaxed atmosphere and there is not many hotels that you can go to and the kids are allowed to ride around the lobby on the little trike. For families with kids this hotel is perfect. The only negative I have is not really the hotel but the breakfast at the Ox restaurant. It really needs to be looked at as the breakfast there was one of the worst I have every had and for some people it could spoil their view of the hotel which would be a shame. I think if you are going to offer a buffet breakfast you really need to have a bit more variety and present things a bit better. The restaurant is very quiet and maybe if they cannot afford to put out a good quality buffet they should just have a menu which you order from. I could write a whole page about the food but to sum it all up the food was either stale, cold, inedible or there were flies buzzing around it. One particular food that sticks in my mind was cold porridge put into glass jars with a lid. I can't understand how you could serve that!!! There was nothing nice about it. Hopefully the hotel has a look at the restaurant and does something about it.
But despite this I would stay here again but not book a package with food.

Room Tip: If you have children make sure you get a Cubby Room.

Our family had a wonderful 1 night/ 2 days stay in this hotel. The last time I went to visit Canberra was around 30 years ago and it has changed so much. Being the capital, we would like to show the kids the capital of the Australia and have a glimpse of Australian history.

Our decision to stay in this hotel was by pure "gut feeling" and reading many of the Senior Contributor writers feedback focusing on those with young family like ourselves. However, we have searched for the area which we have heard was full of cafe's / trendy eateries/ trendy shops (Manuka) and we then find out that this hotel is 5 minutes walk from it. We enjoyed the walks along this area and we have tried some great restaurants that we all enjoyed. The Cathedral is also just across the road from here.

The service from this hotel started way before we checked-in. Accommodating all our requests considering our kids dietary requirements. Upon checking in after being on the road for good 3 hours, we were received with so much warmth with our rooms well ready for us. We have travelled a lot and have stayed in many hotels. East Hotel has one of the most spacious room layout we have stayed in, with its modern retro interior feel, the room gave a minimalism feel yet didn't compromise the quality of both rooms we have occupied. The bed and its linens were so luxurious that we all slept in the next day. The toiletries were of high standard and both rooms have nespresso coffee machine and apparently all rooms in this hotel have one.

We also enjoyed our visit in the lobby where walls were featured with great paintings. Which alone was like a gallery to explore. There is a gym but we didn't get to use it.

No play room but there are so many things to do outside and many nearby parks to let the kids run around. They set up an XBox in the room, snacks for kids and free in-house movie to extend entertainment for the kids.

I would highly recommend this hotel. It's nearby all major historic attractions.

The room rates are on the high side but we got quality service in return.

Room Tip: Rooms 504 and 505- interconnecting room with the view of the sports arena and the new parliament hou...

Some travellers are really hard to please...or so it would seem after reading various criticisms of the East Hotel in this forum. There probably wouldn't be a hotel anywhere on this planet that someone wouldn't be able to find some fault with, whether justifiable and whether trivial or major. But, my wife and I spent two nights at the East this week and overall came away impressed with our experience there.
The hotel is new (Aug '12), it's clean, our studio room (313) was well appointed with a very comfortable bed and pillows, the large flat screen TV (with it's 'user friendly' single remote) had a good range of cable channels including for the sports buffs, all three Fox-Sports options, (and ESPN).
If required, wifi is available in the room with 100mb free each day then chargeable for additional usage, the bathroom was clean, well lit and functional with a full array of the usual toiletries, (heck, the toilet pan even had a noiseless self lowering seat and lid), there was a well equipped gym on the 3rd floor, ample on site parking was available at just $10 per day with unlimited entry/exit, and the hotel is centrally and very conveniently located to the twin "boutique" suburbs of Manuka and Kingston with their wide choice of wine, dine, and shop options.

The front desk staff at the hotel, (well, the three people in particular who we had direct contact with between check-in and check-out), were very courteous and obliging.

We can't offer a comment on the breakfasts at the Oz situated on the ground floor of the hotel, but it would seem from some of the posts that perhaps the standard was average at best. (Or maybe poor even?)
But it should be remembered that this facility is an independently owned and run establishment which the East has no control over.

To be fair to the Oz however, we did have dinner there one night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Our bill came to $123 which included 4 glasses of wine (probably should have just purchased a bottle:-), a cpl of starters, and two mains...salmon, and lamb. (Both dishes were as good as any we've sampled at any other restaurant anywhere, as indeed was the efficient and friendly service).

Perhaps, the one main 'criticism' that could be directed at the East hotel, is that it presently doesn't offer guests it's own breakfast or restaurant services. (And hence our 4 star rating only, otherwise, in every other capacity, at least as far as our own experience at the East was concerned - 5 Stars).
At our room rate of $180pn (+ $10 parking), I don't know of any other hotel in the ACT that could compare with the East for overall standard and dollar value.
Would we recommend this hotel ? - YES
Would we stay at this hotel again? - YES, YES

Don't want to be too critical, because we liked quite a few aspects of this Hotel, but hated a few too.
We liked the cleanliness of the Hotel and the room and bathroom.
We liked the staff, who were universally friendly and helpful.
We loved the free bike hire, they were wonderfully comfortable and we took them on a lovely ride round Lake Burley Griffin, excellent.
We had an apartment, and we liked the way they used every possible way to pack in useful features into the room, such as a mirror inside the wardrobe that could be used as a dressing mirror.
I also liked the rather firm bed, just personal preference.
However.... have to say the decor was not to our personal taste, dark corridors and gunmetal grey doors. I have never been in prison, but this was the feeling it gave me.
The room itself appeared very small, may have been exaggerated by the previous Hotel we had stayed at having a huge room, and the claustrophobic feeling was exacerbated both by the actual room door's strong, heavy construction and the fact that there was a further heavy duty door in front of that which I took to be to further insulate our room and the one next door from any corridor noise.
But the thing that really let the Hotel down was breakfast in the Ox restaurant. Now I know the restaurant is not actually part of the Hotel, but guests are bound to try it, whether through convenience or curiosity, and I am afraid this was the worst Hotel breakfast experience we have had for many years.
Again the decor is not inviting, dark brown booths that look very dated. The boxed cereals were fine, nice and varied, but the bread for toast was not covered, and a fair selection of flies were crawling over them. The orange and pineapple? juices were of cheap quality, and the hot food, eggs and sausages were conveyed from the kitchen across the restaurant and displayed rather unattractively in glass topped containers.
The Ox restaurant needs to rethink the content, quality, layout and presentation of their breakfast, as this outdated provision is also causing harm to the East Hotel's reputatation.

Room Tip: If I stayed here again, I would invest in a larger room than the basic apartment, which felt small f...

Hello hornsdn,

Thank you for your review and responding constructively to my emails.

It was great for me to learn where we let you down. We recognize our product style is not for everyone and for this we were hot and cold for you.

I am particularly disappointed about the breakfast letting you down. While this is held in Ox (a very successful dining and bar venue) and operated by their team, we have actually taken this on as an EAST product so everything that takes place during the breakfast service falls to me. I will definitely take your comments on board.

From your TripAdvisor profile and as per your email it is clear you have travelled extensively and therefore have a vast array of experiences. We have changed this breakfast product to something that has actually begun to make most of our guests very happy. A good variety of food at arguably the best breakfast prices in the region.

Thank you again for your comments and for giving EAST a try. It was informative to learn of the variety of experiences you had as you travelled through Australia and I wish you the best.

Best Regards,
