“Cosy and comfortable”

My husband and I stayed for one night last week whilst on business in Canberra. This hotel is tucked away in a very quiet spot and we had a large and comfortable room on the third floor. ONE DOWNFALL...When my husband phoned to make our reservation he was told check in would be at 1 p.m. We timed our arrival to fit in with the appointments my husband had. We got to the hotel at 1.45 p.m. and were told the room wasn't ready yet and could we come back in an hour. That wasn't a very good situation because it would have been nice to freshen up before going out. On our return there was no apology...we were both glared at by the two ladies at the desk which I felt was rather odd. All in all though, we were not bothered by noise and we had a comfortable sleep. The staff in the morning were a complete contrast to the two ladies the afternoon before. Because of the comfort aspect, we would stay at this hotel again.

I've stayed here many times over the years and I live coming back. This place has character and you can sense the history. The stairs creak. The rooms are large and well appointed in keeping with the character and age of the Hotel.

This is not the place to stay if you are looking for sleek and modern but if you want warmth, charm and character you should give it a go.

Staff are welcoming and friendly.

I have stayed at The Brassey many times for business and it probably remains one of my picks to stay when visiting Canberra. Once again I had a good experience staying here. The rooms are comfortable and clean - and quiet. The separate bathroom is a good size. The hot water does take a little while to come through but when it does it is hot. Staff are friendly and helpful. Very pleasant overnight stay.

I've stayed at the Brassey many times over the past 7 or 8 years and it remains my favourite Canberra hotel. Clean, comfortable rooms (pay the extra for a larger room), a pleasant bar and good breakfasts. The restaurant is just ok (and closed on Sundays) but Manuka is an easy walk and has some really great restaurants. I've stayed elsewhere in Canberra butwith free parking, this is the best value for money and has the feel and warmth of a comfortable old coat.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a deluxe room. Well worth it.

The history of this hotel has been used well to create a charming hotel in a sometimes cold and modernistic Canberra. Updates have ensured a good standard of fitout and maintenance. My room was spacious and included a double (didn't seem overly large) and single bed. Separate bathroom was also roomy but the electric bar heater was definitely needed in the morning.

Annoyances were the split system air conditioning that did not seem to respond to changes in the fan settings (only speed was flat out and noisy) and the old style windows that rattled in the strong winds. Plumbing noise from other rooms was also intrusive. Overall these minor issues are outweighed by the quiet and convenient location and warm feel of the place.

Staff were generally friendly and competent. Breakfast was good with all the usual options and a special treat to suit the weather - hot porridge!

The hotel is located near many of the key attractions. I walked to the National Gallery taking in the lake but it is a good 30 minutes. If you are not a keen walker or get easily lost a taxi may be a better option to make best use of your time.

Tucked away in a suburban street in Barton, the Brassey is a 15-minute walk from Parliament House.
The hotel is tidy and unfussy but the 1990s panelled wood with brass fittings is looking a little tired. The bathroom has Victorian style tiles and toilet and was let down by mouldy grout in the shower.
A few new pictures around the place would freshen the look.
