“Fairly ordinary stay”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2009

Stayed at the Rex for only one night and found it rather indifferent. You can't book directly from their website - technical issues I was told by the receptionist. Booked through one of the last minute websites.

Their pricing structure is quite confusing, you pay $40.00 more if you want a twin room even though I was travelling with an 11 year old child. Their excuse was that it takes more time to service a twin room than a double, however I then pointed out that their family rates were cheaper. 1 double and one single in the room. Their response, the owners sets the rates and neither the manager or the staff have any control over the prices. Weird...

Ate dinner in the restaurant and they only had two waiters on duty and a full restaurant of people. People were complaining about not getting served and we waited for approx one hour to get our meal. Same the next morning with the buffet running out of hot food. In their defence it was really busy but they should be used to large crowds.

Room was pretty basis, heater would not work properly and I ended up turning it off as only cold air was pouring out. Bed was ok - and hot water was running out fast so very quick shower. Room needed a good vacuum as lots of dust and lint in the corners and there was a huge red looking stain on the bedspread. (looked like blood)

Staff very friendly and wanted to assist but think they are dealing with cost cutting owners who really have no idea how to deal with customers.

Not our first choice but Canberra heavily booked due to NSW school sports events being held so huge demand and not much choice. Next year would book a lot earlier and try elsewhere.

stayed in a twin room. the room was old, but still alright (clean tidy etc). shower took a while (1-2min) to heat up. toilet was a bit hard to flush (button needed a really hard push).
they're in the process of doing some reservations so you may get some slight morning noise when garden/construction work begins.
what did make up for a lot of older things was the buffet breakfast (if you get it ) I stayed for a week and they kept it varied and nicely cooked. (although one morning there was a crowd before us and they ate up almost everything so the poor kitchen took a while to replenish the trays)

Booked one night at the Rex as a stopover on way back to Syd from the snow, and as soon as we arrived we noticed problems... First, the wotif description said "renovated" rooms - the rooms are faarrr from it. I've heard the hotel is being very, very slowly renovated, and until it has been completed, I wouldn't recommend staying at the Rex. The good points we did make note of however was the large bed and WiFi.... that's about it.
So if you're passing through Canberra, then this may be a good choice if you're not looking to fork out the $ and just want a bed to sleep in, but otherwise I'd look elsewhere. Oh, and if you're taller than 5 and a half feet (I'm 6'4) then don't expect to have a comfortable shower unless you're a contortionist and can fold yourself in half... the shower head in our room was mounted to a lowered part of the ceiling making it extremely awkward....

This hotel was a little bit older than some might like but the service was impeccable. We were greeted by very polite and respectful staff who then advised us on the best places to eat etc with maps. The concierge was most obliging. The room itself was spacious enough and had all the amenities you would need without being posh.

  • Liked — The people - the concierge was wonderful
  • Disliked — The location was too far to walk to the restaurants

I read the reviews couple of days after I booked Rex online and was a bit worried about the accommodation I booked. But I was very pleasantly surprised. The room was renovated, simple but spacious (king room). The staff was absolutely fantastic. Very helpful and friendly. Dinner at Millie's Restaurant was delicious, staff friendly and very pleasant. The hotel is close to all Canberra attractions. The pool is not operating until further notice. We were too busy to even think about the pool, but this should be pointed out when booking.

First i gotta say - the breakfast was terrific and the selection of foods very good - and reasonably priced, especially if you take advantage of the early bird and pay the night before. FULL MARKS for that , however ,WOULD NOT STAY THERE AGAIN,
DISAPPOINTING is how i would describe the REX !!!!!
Their website ad says newly painted and recarpeted well yes it has been repainted and recarpeted but really canberra rex the carpet looks like the mice had chewed the edges and the paint was obivious on the bathroom tiles - the bathroom has a shower in the bath which is hard to get in and out of the shower head is so low u gotta be a short person to get a good shower the tiles were mouldy the vent above the shower filthy with dust - (which i have a picture of ) no exhaust fan and really very small.
Toenail clippings on the balcony from previous occupants. Interconnecting doors gives no sound proof and to our neighbour who turned their TV on at 4.45 am thanks a lot
We stayed in a king size room which was quite large except for the bathroom and some items in the room had been updated others not - a strange mixture . No mini bar in room
You cannot fill the jug /kettle up under the sink in the bathroom and the shower is the only place to fill the kettle.

  • Liked — The breakfast
  • Disliked — the accomadation - better value elsewere - would not stay again

Work booked my room for one night, it was the only accomodation they could get as Parliament was sitting and accomodation was tight. I read the bad reviews on this site and was not looking forward to the stay...even worse, the taxi driver from the airport told me the place was so bad it had been condemed and was about to be knocked down (his attempt at a bad joke). Perhaps with this negative image in mind, I was pleasantly suprised to find the staff helpful and my room fairly pleasant and clean. My stay was enjoyable. There are better hotels in Canberra, but for price and location the Rex should not be ignored.
