Rydges Capital Hill Canberra
Ranked #33 of 58 Hotels in Canberra
Reviewed June 28, 2013

I travel to Canberra every 3 weeks for work - have stayed at numerous Hotels within the Canberra area - however have found Rydges Capital Hill to one of the better - the staff are very pleasant and helpful, the rooms are very spacious, comfortable beds, undercover secure parking, within walking distance to Manuka which has some great eateries. Will be back.

Very limited choice for a recent work trip due to Parliament sitting. Rydges Capital Hill was the only hotel with sufficient rooms for our group, and it was better than expected. Its location is quite good, being a quick walk to the restaurants and shops at Manuka.

The room was ok, quite big with a comfortable bed, however the bathroom was in desperate need of a re-vamp, very old fashioned and tired, with a shower head in need of a good scrub. Set up of the room was a little strange, overlooking an internal courtyard where the bar/restaurant is, which meant there was no natural light at all. The tv also had the strangest operating system I have ever encountered - definitely takes some effort to get it to work.

This would certainly not be my first choice in Canberra (The Realm or Burbury are much nicer), but my stay was uneventful and satisfactory.

Thanks for the constructive feedback we’ll certainly work on improving in those areas you mention.

I think the bathrooms in our suites (which don’t cost much more) are really great large with separate Shower and Bath. As you mention the Hotel location is good and the beds excellent. With newer competitors nearby we are conscious of and do work very hard on our service delivery.

Hopefully we’ll see you again.

Paid for a standard double room direct with the hotel and got a family pass to questacon, full buffet breakfast for all and free parking. It was great value as i used my priority rewards card and got another 10% off.
The breakfast was really good, one of the better buffet breakfasts I've had.
Its close to Manuka and shops/food.
Was a little concerned that when we arrived at 3.30 our room was not ready, but sometimes that happens.
The major downside to this was what seemed paper-thin walls. Listening to a group of middle aged women getting ready to go out for the night is not fun, but what is even worse is listening to them roll in the door to their room at 12.30am and singing Elton John songs for 2 hours before passing out.
Sometimes people are just inconsiderate and the hotel can try to do something about it with noisy people. I would have hated to have been in a room next to someone on their honeymoon...

Room Tip: Not next to middle aged drunk women..

I’m disappointed that you were kept awake by inconsiderate noisy neighbours.

We have a zero tolerance policy to those types of situations and the Night Manager has the authority and indeed is instructed after an appropriate warning to remove disruptive revellers from the Hotel.

Please let us know if this happens in future, help is only a phone call away.

Big rooms, comfortable beds (2 doubles was a bit of overkill for just me there for a 2 day conference) - and you can even buy the beds (presumably brand new ones), nice bathroom (although shower over bath could be difficult for some). My room was the closest to the lobby on the ground floor so just a little noise. Air conditioner kept the room very warm even on minimum setting but winters in Canberra are very cold so couldn't turn it off (tried for a bit and froze). Have to pay to use the gym (bit unusual) but pool / spa / sauna were free although open late (8am) so couldn't use facilities before conference sessions started. Some of my colleagues complained of noisy aircon but I didn't have this.

Room Tip: Upper floors probably quieter than next to the lobby, but ground floor convenient to pool & gym.

Your assumption is correct; we only sell NEW beds from our supplier AH Beard :)

We’re doing a bit of work on the air conditioning system; it really needs to be a bit more flexible.

Thanks again for the feedback; I hope we see you back soon.

Last weeks visit to Canberra reminded us what good value the centrally located Rydge's Capital Hill offers. The bright, generously proportioned rooms (especially the King suites to the rear of the hotel which catch the Winter sun) are warm and welcoming as are the reception team, one of whom advised they had held the position for 6 years. This is most unusual in an industry where maintaining good staff can be a problem and speaks volumes for the hotel and its management.
The recent upgrade to public areas was timely and necessary, given the arrival of nearby competitor properties and the complimentary Wi-Fi now means Rydge's offers just about everything business or vacation travellers need. One small observation though..it would be nice if the welcome drink (be it coffee) offered to Priority guests also applied to their travel partner. The cost would be small compared to the value of the recognition extended.

One of the attractions of this place is the larger than usual basic room size, large comfortable bed, couch. Also tea coffee area has an alcove, with sink, better than filling kettles in bathroom. Bathroom clean and serviceable but in need of a refurbishment.
Not a holiday hotel, more for business but great for a winter weekend in Canberra, close to NGA (Turner exhibition a must) and other Canberra icons. Manuka cafes and restaurants close by and for a footy weekend the oval is a drop punt away. Pool is pleasant. Breakfast buffet excellent, staff on front desk efficient and pleasant. If you go to other Rydges worth joining the Priority Guest.

A bit of room to move, you bet. At 32 square metres versus 24-28 for most hotels we have a bit more space than most.

I note your comments regarding bathrooms, we’re re-grouting at the moment which will brighten them up however to be honest a refurbishment is not planned in the short term. The images on our website are accurate and up to date, I’d suggest the King Spa Suites as they have lovely bathrooms and the rate is typically not much more.

Otherwise; great location/bed/breakfast/pool and of course staff hopefully add up to a pleasant stay, thanks for the endorsement.

I hope we see you back here soon.

Very nice hotel. We had a family room, on level 3. Very big rooms enough for a family of 4. There is a separate bedroom for adults which is handy. Bathroom is big and very functional. The beds are comfortable and these rooms have two TV's. The rooms have a small bar fridge, and jug. A microwave would have been a good. The rooms are clean and well presented. Room service is o.k but we have had better. Having said that the service from staff was brilliant, especially a young lady Melissa on reception. She was so helpful and thoughtful. Amenities are good, the pool is big, the gym is well equipped but the $8.80 charge for hotel guests is not so good. Overall our family had a lovely stay would stay again. If you are looking at sightseeing and activities the location is a perfect base, most things are within half hr drive. If you want to be in Canberra Centre it is a 10 min drive.

Room Tip: 3rd, level rooms are probably the ones with least exposure to noise. Our room faced the atrium which...
