“Clean and good location but fairly un-inspiring”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 5, 2010

I have stayed at this hotel many times for work travel over the last few years. It is clean and well maintained but nothing special. If you just need somewhere to sleep at night and have a shower in the morning then it is fine. Rooms are extremely basic - this hotel is essentially a 1960's motel that has been given a coat of paint and updated bed linen. Overall the room is incredibly uninspiring with fluro lighting and a very old TV.

The staff can be a bit "hit and miss" with their service. Sometimes they are lovely and helpful - at other times it can appear they are doing you a favour by just being there at the desk. The "restaurant" is a whole other matter - don't expect any level of service.

The big plus for this hotel is the location - it is only a short walk from the restaurants/cafes of Manuka. HIghly recommended!!!

This isn't a place for a special weekend away - it is just the basics. But with hotel prices at the level of ridiculous in our nation's capital it is easy to see why this place is always busy and booked out on weekends with lots of older couples on driving holidays. And why my work always books me in to stay here...

I stayed in a one bedroom apartment. I thought the place was ugly; it looks like they've taken over some housing commission apartments and did a quick paint job and put new bathrooms in.

Bedding was poor quality and I felt itchy all night from bugs in the room
TV reception bad
Obnoxious sign saying I'll be charged $70 if I don't empty the rubbish. Well I couldn't find the rubbish bin and I was running late for work because I couldn't sleep so I suppose the office will have to pay that..

Hotels in Canberra are on the expensive side. We stayed at The Forrest which was about the most reasonable we could find at around $150 p.n (if u book online) for a 1 bedroom suite with some cooking facilities- enough to make a hot breakfast if u want to. The rooms are compact but have everything u will be needing. We found the accommodation to be very clean and very comfortable. The location is handy to Parliament house, The Art Museum and most other attractions, also there is a lovely restaurant area at Manuka a few short blocks away. The neighborhood is quiet, green and leafy. The staff were very helpful.

Website is misleading - rooms look superior to reality. Stayed in a 1BR apartment with what looked like a double bed - until I tried to go to sleep and discovered it was two singles pushed together and the mattresses were slightly different heights. Also, bathroom mouldy and smell permeated entire apartment. Furnishings dated and tired. Vinyl lounge that was hard and uncomfortable, tiny dining table that was too small to use as a work desk. Sign in kitchen telling me to put out the rubbish or I would be charged an extra $70!!

Stayed here during the last week of Parliament, and found the establishment well positioned to Parliament and Manuka. True, it's getting a bit long in the tooth, but he location is excellent.... Reception was good, and the people polite and helpful. The room, while getting a little tired, had everything that I needed, although the shower was very cramped, and the TV was a little old. Rhe restaurant was expensive for the food. Who really wants to pay $20 for a very well done chicken and schnitzel, chips and a tired salad?

But the bed was comfortable, and each day room service cleaned up and remade the bed.

Would I stay there again? Sure. But I would make the 15-minute walk to Manuka each evening to buy a significantly better meal for the same money.

Stayed at the Forrest several times for work. It is an old motel but consistently cheap. Most of the rooms have kitchenettes with stovetop and microwave, and all have a little fridge, so you can stay quite cheaply if you buy your own food at Manuka Coles (open till midnight) 10 mins walk away. Likewise the cafe strip and cinema at Manuka is 10 mins away, quite a nice suburb to walk through. Also 10 mins to Parl House of a morning. If you like to exercise, a brisk walk along National Circuit to the left of the hotel will bring you past some gorgeous houses, embassies and The Lodge. Lovely in autumn.

Perfectly competent rooms with showers, tvs, electric blankets on the bed, reverse cycle air con, wardrobe, iron and board etc. There is a coin op laundry room on the ground floor with 3 washers and 2 dryers. No bathtubs in rooms just showers, no soap (just a dispenser on the wall), and the walls are very thin - you tend to hear everything your neighbours get up to, which can be distracting if they get in late or you know them and don't want to hear it! No minibar and no room service, although there is a restaurant you can get breakfast or dinner in. The motel rooms are behind the reception area. Through a gate at the back of the motel rooms is where their 2 bedroom units are, on the adjoining block facing the street behind. These appear to be actual residential units and are also quite comfy and big enough for long term accommodation with separate laundry, kitchen and lounge, but still no bathtub!! 2 bed units also have fewer problems with noisy neighbours.

From the website we expected a modern hotel, but this is very much an old style motel with some small updates.

Our room was small but quite pleasant, and the cot we had requested was provided on check in.

The main problem was the bathroom, which was very shabby. The toilet cistern leaked which made the floor wet. There were wet towels from the previous guest in the room when we checked in. And the soap dispenser near the bathroom handbasin leaked, so there was pink goo all over the counter top.

The check in staff were pleasant, but didn't offer any discount or apology when I told them about the problems with the bathroom.

I would not stay here again, because I think for the price there are cleaner, more comfortable options in Canberra.
