When I checked in, the guy said, "I think you will be pleasantly surprised." He was right. I was just looking for somewhere to sleep for two nights while in town for work, and this more than sufficed. It was a pleasant walk into the town centre each day. The room (or should I say suite) was HUGE. It had a separate lounge room with a great view across the ANU campus. The bed was very comfortable and the heated floor in the bathroom was great. The only downside was that (as mentioned in previous reviews) the plumbing can be a little noisy, so if your neighbours take their shower early, you might hear it. I will most definitely stay there again.

This hotel was formerly accommodation for ANU academics, so it is on the university campus. The furniture in the rooms looks like it dates from the 1950s/60s, and is completely my taste, so this adds to the hotel's charm for me. The bathroom was also cutely old fashioned. Very clean rooms, could have done with a more comfortable bed but I was in a twin room so a less than brilliant night's sleep was to be expected. But despite this I would stay here again, just for the quirky rooms and the old fashioned taps!

A regular venue for trips to ANU. I love the courtyard and the art deco stylings. I preferred it when breakfast was served in Boffins restaurant, but the modern facilities now offered in the Buttery are also good.

University House is the high end of the university residences for the Australian National University, one of the leading Australian universities. Officially opened in 1954, rooms are located around a central courtyard near the edge of the campus. The rooms themselves are sparse by modern standards but spacious, comfortable and functional; the overall ambience is a little quaint but pleasant and the breakfast included in my room rate was very pleasant.

Ideal if you're attending an ANU function and conveniently located for central Canberra more generally - while across the central lake from Parliament/National Gallery/etc, it is well sited for shops and so forth.

- I was woken at 2.30am by a beeping smoke detector - the battery was flat. A man had to bring a ladder in to disconnect it. I asked for a discount on my room - given my
sleep has been severly disrupted. But no that was too hard for them. A breakfast was the best they could do.
- When I came back to the room the next night it had not been fixed - its still hanging from the ceiling.
- I also found that my room has a TV but on one channel has reception. Ironically a TV guide has been placed next to the TV but its of no use for guests in this room - they only have one choice. Please provide facilities that work!
- Their advertising says there is a restaurant open 7 days till 930pm.
False advertising! I was here last night at 8pm - had had a very busy
day and wanted a meal...nope it was closed. Its quite a dark trek from town
so their early closure was very inconvenient.
My experience over the last few days has suggested a bit of a sloppy operation.

I have stayed in this place a couple of times before and quite like its out-dated older style. It is a quiet location in the grounds of the university.
This time I upgraded to a superior room which was lovely. The rooms are very clean and well presented.
However, no sooner did I put my head on the pillow and there was a whoosh noise, then another. This seemed to go on for hours. Early in the morning I awoke to terrible whining noises. I discovered that there was a sewer running down the back of the cupboard (which didn't smell so good either) and this was conducting every plumbing noise into my room.
The restaurant is passable but expensive and let down by the staff.
Breakfast is buffet style and quite good.
The reception staff tend to be rude and unhelpful - there is a Fawlty Towers feel about it.

An easy walk into Canberra city and in very pleasant surroundings. It is older style accommodation and the price reflects this. We stayed in a Queen Superior Suite in the north wing, small bedroom but with a large sitting room and an updated bathroom and we didn’t notice a smell. There is a library with free computer access. Boffins restaurant was very good.
