It felt as though we were staying in a professor's rooms from another era, completely different from anything we've staying in before. Certainly not luxurious but it was full of character and clean with the added advantage of being very quite at night as you are in the university grounds. Breakfast however was poor and over priced.

As reluctant as I am to share my secret… this is by far my favourite place to stay in Canberra. It's great value, elegant understated and wonderful. The rooms are lovely and the design of the cloistered courtyard a delight. Don't expect plush, expect refined and stylish. It's located adjacent to Civic with good many restaurants a short walk away, as is the lake with many sights a more extended and pleasant walk away, by bicycle, everything is very much close by. As far as I'm concerned, it's the perfect place to stay in Canberra.

Room Tip: Try to get a room looking out over the gardens.

This is a different sort of place and after staying in regular hotels it was a really pleasant change. The room we had was nice and big, quite retro, very quiet and a lovely garden. We had business at the university so the location was perfect. If you are looking for the standard hotel room then this isn't for you, but we liked it. There was a shower over the bath which was okay. The heater was on when we got there - nice - and the front desk staff were helpful.

Room Tip: ours was ground floor and right near the reception. Perfect

As others have said, it is an older place but has character and a certain charm. I only stayed a night (I have stayed before) and I was fortunate to have what appeared to be a renovated room and bathroom. Still the same style with the nice old fashioned furniture but appeared to have been painted and refreshed and very clean and tidy and very comfortable. The oil heater worked well and I noticed that there is reverse cycle airconditioning/heating if required. There is a library with internet for guests to use, which is quite handy. The square/courtyard and the grounds around are a very peaceful place to relax, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is an easy, pleasant 25 minute walk to the centre of the city which I did.
Dinner is available at Boffins or at Fellows Bar (cheaper option). I dined at Fellows. The choices are adequate and the prices reasonable.
Breakfast in the Fellows Bar was very relaxing with newspapers available to read.
I have put up guests from out of town here and would not hesitate to do so again.

To end our 6 months stay in Canberra, we spent the last night at University House. The location is wonderful if you have business at the university. It's right on the campus, among trees full of birds, close to Lake Burley Griffin and in a very quiet place. But the rooms are quite old and look a little dated, even if the wooden furniture is beautiful and the rooms are spacious (we had a superior queen room with an extra sitting room (to repack our cases!). Unfortunately, the bathroom has seen better days and felt dated. It was clean enough and had all we needed. Warm water fine, tea making facilities ... We had heavy luggage which we needed to carry upstairs as there is no lift for access. We had tried the Boffin's Restaurant at a previous occasion but we were unconvinced. It was a lot of money for not so very much and we felt that the staff was treating us in a condescending and indifferent manner and the food was not great. Of course, it's convenient. But for a cheaper option, the Fellow' s Bar offers simple fare and a great atmosphere. (but closes early) A pity that there is no free internet.

Room Tip: If problems with access, must ask for a barrier free room. Otherwise there are stairs.

Had a double room with a nice airy living room and balcony. Visited in Australian winter so bathroom's under floor heating was very welcome. University House built in 1950s in modernist style and carefully preserved, so is an atmospheric place to stay. Standard hot and cold buffet breakfast was available and adjacent Fellows Bar for drinks in the evening, although the bar was too brightly lit and unsympathetically furnished to provide a location for a cosy drink. Location is in the north of the city, so not as close to the main sights in the southern half of the city as some other accommodation available.

We stayed here from 23 to 26 July 2014. We have stayed here on a number of occasions over the years and it has always been comfortable and convenient. The room was spacious and warm. Has shower over bath. Was very clean and quiet. Dining was excellent and convenient. Staff friendly and efficient. Would stay here again.
