This really worked well for us. I'm a regular business traveller to Canberra and sometimes travel outside of business. Being part of the University this is just close enough to to Civic to be accessible, but provides a quiet, serene atmosphere outside of the mainstream hotels. We had a suite - the study had a good desk, and enough space to feel comfortable and not cramped. Bathroom and bedroom were fine.

Yes the decor is "old" but in this setting it actually fits in - more "period" than "tired". Narrow stairs may be a problem for some.. But would appear there are sufficient ground floor rooms for the taking.

If you have a car, then this is a great option, and better value than many places in Canberra.

Canberra is not a big city and it does have its share of large modern hotels that you will find in any other city. Prices are also similar to what you pay in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. So it was great to find this hotel in the Australian National University campus. The hotel is quiet, clean and peaceful. Just the atmosphere for some relaxation after a round of meetings or a visit to some of the nearby attractions (National Film & Sound Archive, National Museum of Australia, Australian War Memorial) some of which are within walking distance. Downtown for cafe, restaurants and shopping are also a comfortable walk. Others have mentioned the garden, fish pond and private balcony. My twin room was large, clean and comfortable with everything you would expect. The bathroom was modern and i have to say the water pressure was terrific and welcome after a hot day. Breakfast (continental, $15; buffet, ?$) was of a good standard, including the coffee. So why wouldn't you stay here at a significant cost saving ($144 for twin, compared to $240 or more for others)? I recommend a stay here for anyone. Did I mention wifi ($10 per 24 h, or free pcs in lobby)?

A very pleasant change from modern hotels. The 1950's decor has been tastefully updated where it counts eg en suite. We had a superior queen suite. Bedroom tight however ample space in living room with sofa, writing desk and sideboard. Stairs would be a challenge for some, but ground floor suites available. We faced onto the heavily treed carpark which was fine. Fellows Bar and Cafe excellent. Boffins menu v good but service was unduly slow with catering underway for one or two seminars running that night.

Room Tip: Request suite with windows overlooking the large grassed quadrangle. Ground floor if mobility an iss...

Our rooms, a sitting room and bedroom with really good bathroom, was certainly very different to staying in an hotel. We had far more space than we needed, and a very comfy bed with good pillows. Very good linen and towels, certainly the above are priorities for me when away from home. My only disappointment was the breakfast. The same old standard fare you get in motels. The bread basket was empty and I couldn't be bothered asking for bread when I saw what others had. Why can't places run to fresh tasty bread? And what's with baked beans and sausages in Bain Marie's? So very unappetising. I was able to request and get a teapot to make tea, but a milk jug was not available, just had to put milk in a spare cup. Yes, I can be grumpy in the morning, but I did feel breakfast could have been just so much nicer with some effort. That aside, it was a good place to stay, convenient to town and the gallery. The setting is quite delightful, nice grounds and parking is free, but ask for a voucher, we weren't told when we checked in despite asking where we could park, no big deal, we found out later. In my ratings for this hotel I have inadvertently rated the pool and fitness centre "poor", I don't believe they have those facilities, but I can't remove the rating!!

A nice change from your typical motel, nice and quite, secure and comfortable. Centrally located and just a short walk to some good local restaurants that include some great BYO's. nice gardens surround full of interesting bird life and a well stocked bar is a few minutes away with outdoor seating.

When I found University House on a travel site I was a litte hesitant about it because of the reviews citing '50's decor. Not to worry! This is a great value, with spotless rooms, nice shower, fridge, a/c and quiet, pretty grounds with a large, long koi pond. Parking is free in an adjacent parking lot and the free buffet breakfast outshines many full breakfasts in full-service hotels. All this for $119 AUD (twin room) per nght, a price tough to beat in Canberra. In an 11-day trip in Australia, this was the best value of any place we stayed. Situated on the grounds of Australian National University, it's an easy walk into central Canberra, though you'll want a car for accessing other sites in the city. There is an in-house restaurant, Boffins, which we enjoyed (see my separate review), a beer garden and indoor cafe to choose from, as well. Staff was very helpful in providing maps, etc., for getting around Canberra. Bottom line, unless you need the brass and marble of 5-star rated hotels, this is a great place to stay in Canberra!

Room Tip: Book early! No elevators for upper floor rooms. If stairs are an issue, request a ground floor roo...

Good location with walking distance to Canberra centre. Quit rooms. Furnitures and fittings are simple and 1950 style. Clean and all you need, including TV, fridge and big writing desk. It is like being part of the University. The price for a room with two beds is very good and includes breakfast for two, free parking and free WiFi. Very nice gardens, including the beer garden. Friendly and helpful reception and staff. Will stay again at University House.
