“Do the 2 bridges walk”
Reviewed February 4, 2013

LBG is the most pictoresque inland waterway in Australia. I live in Canberra and have the pleasure of a regular LBG bike commute for which I'll never tire. Its framed by many national monuments and served by tourist bus or easy walking distance from the city. You must do the 2 bridges walk, a 1 hr loop across Commonwealth ave and Kings ave bridges. Divert through one of Australia's great green spaces, Commonwealth Park, particularly for Floriade (free entry) in Sept-Oct. 'The Deck' at Regatta point is the pick for a coffee break and close by to the stunning Captain Cook memorial water jet, which typically operates 10-12 and 2-4 daily. The National Library also has a well regarded cafe. The Carillion is another must do, with chimes that drift across the lake on the hour. With a wide, smooth path on the loop, its just perfect for walking, running and cycling, although stay left on the narrower paths across the bridges please. There is a great value little cruise boat (around $10/adult) which departs from the southern side. Best free parking option is by Questacon. The National Library, High Court, Questacon and the National Gallery are all less then 100m from the waters edge. The quirky National Museum is on the opposite (west) side of Commonwealth bridge but still within walking distance. Hop in the car for short trips to Parliament House, the War Memorial and Black Mountain tower. You can't miss this scenic wonder on your Canberra visit.
