We spent 3 nights at the Novotel Canberra recently.

Its location is very central - we could walk to a range of restaurants and the main shopping area.

Staff were friendly and helpful, room(s) were comfortable and clean and were well appointed with ironing board, hair dryer and Foxtel TV. They even had a jar of sweets for guests, near the lifts - nice touch!

We checked in mid evening and it was raining outside, so we dined in the restaurant on the 1st floor. Staff were helpful and not flustered at all when we had to send back a dish because of the inclusion of so much coriander that not much else could be tasted. Other dishes were fine.

Breakfasts were great - good choice and friendly prompt service.

Unfortunately we had to change rooms after the first night - our room was at the back of the hotel overlooking the bus station. Buses arrived throughout the night and left their engines running. That and the reversing beeps were just too annoying.
For the remainder of our visit, we stayed at the front and weren't much bothered by traffic or wine bar noise.

We were very disappointed that the Novotel didn't provide free internet connection.
It's very hard to understand that in this day, they find it necessary to annoy their patrons by charging for a connection that can be gained free in most shopping centres and corner cafés. Not only do they want to charge patrons but charge more than $20 for 2 hrs use! (Yet they provide Foxtel???)

Another disappointing factor - which, combined with the charging of internet connection, will encourage us to stay else where in future - is that a surcharge is added to a bill when paid by credit card (even an Aust based bank credit card). How else might guests pay for a stay? I've never seen a guest pay with cash!

Recommendation: Put your charges up to include these additional costs (guests will think they're getting them free) but don't charge extra for them - in doing so, you're greatly annoying people who are supporting you - more importantly though you're giving them 2 very good reasons to go and try the opposition - and who knows - they might just find they like the opposition better!

This is a Novotel right in the heart of the city. It matches the service standards of the hotel group.
Large, modern rooms with a bar and a restaurant.
The ( somewhat expensive) red tour bus stops a couple of minutes away from the hotel.
A pleasant bar overlooks the street through expansive windows.
We did not have breakfast in the hotel as there is a fantastic variety of cafes and restaurants in a mall across the road. I can particularly recommend Cream for breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front.

Con's
-This hotel is a bit overpriced. I had to pay 297 AUD per night several nights.
-There is no free of charge internet, you are charged 25 AUD for 24 hrs of internet. Free internet should be included for these type of hotel prices. I haven't come across many hotels lately who charge for this. WiFI i got to work a few times but isn't reliable, the staff was friendly but didn't really understand why the latter didn't work.
-The elevator room pass activation system is the worst i have seen in 15 years of business travel. Often you had to re-insert your pass 2 or 3 times before you could select a floor.

Pro's
-Rooms are clean
-Location is excellent, close to a shopping area.
-Breakfast is good, They are differentiating between a cold and hot continental breakfast of 23 AUD vs 30 AUD.

Dear RC583,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about the hotel. I do apologise that some of the hotels facilities did not meet your expectations.
We do offer our guests complimentary internet for 30 minutes in foyer as an alternate to paying for this service. If you do become a silver member through Accor, we do offer this service complimentary to those members also.
The elevator system with your keys has simply been put in place for security of our guests. This allows only guests to have access to the floor they are staying on.

We also would like to thank you for your kind comments in regard to our rooms and location.
We do hope you return to our hotel in the future.

Thank you,
Hotel Management

I've stayed at the Novotel Canberra a few times now and find it consistently good. I was upgraded to an Executive King room which faced Northbourne Avenue, but didn't notice any street noise. The room was comfortably appointed with a king bed, day bed/sofa, desk, and flat screen tv.

The bathroom had a walk-in shower, with what appeared to be a near-new rain shower. My only criticism of the room is that it would be useful to have the tv on a pull-out and/or rotating platform, as you could only really watch it comfortably from the bed (the bed is very comfortable by the way).

Breakfast on level 1 is very good, with a broad range of breakfast choices ranges from toast, cereals and pastries through to the usual array of hot items such as scrambled or poached eggs, bacon, sausages and mushrooms.

Parking in the hotel car park is reasonable at $18 per day and usually necessary as the street parking is limited in the area. The hotel is well located near restaurants, convenience stores, a pharmacy, and is a 5-7 min walk from Canberra's main shopping mall.

Great quality as to be expected for Novotel hotels. As per most places in Canberra expensive for business days. Weekends are better value. The location is perfect for walking to the
Lake and other venues. Lots of excellent places to eat within a couple of minutes walk.
As happens sometimes others that share rooms around us were very noisy well into the night. Also on the Sat night there was music coming from within the hotel. As per these hotels breakfast is expensive. We found out later that we could have had cheaper breakfast as we didn't want much but they only told us about the buffet.
Don't expect to get a reasonable discount even if you have a booking for a number of days and arrive very late at night looking for a room the day prior. Also if you want free wifi go to any 3 star hotel in the area. Never understood why the cheapest hotels have free wifi in the rooms, but more expensive the hotel you have to pay the ridiculous price of $25 for the day.

Room Tip: If on holiday and flexible for dates try to stay over the weekend to average the cost down. Try to...
