“Decent location. Careful about the phone charges and housekeeping”
Reviewed March 12, 2013

The Novotel was in a convenient location for the purposes of my trip and a short walk to most things in the central area. The room was an average size and fairly new – slightly strange layout with a sink like a kitchen sink area outside the toilet/shower room that looked over the bed.

There was a large wall mounted TV, decent sized desk but a lounge chair in a strange placement in the room.

I needed to make two calls to free phone (1800) numbers during my stay, one of which didn’t even connect but I was charged $1 a call, I was told “charge for connecting to an outside line”!! Be careful if you choose to use the phone.

I recommend you double lock your door if you don’t want to be disturbed while in the room. Housekeeping came and pestered me several times to move things in and out of the wardrobe. When I went out for lunch I put the ‘do not disturb sign’ on the door but when I returned I found that housekeeping had entered the room in my absence to leave something in the room. Clearly the signs are ignored by staff.

Other than these incidents the staff were generally polite and efficient. The buffet breakfast has some decent choices and good quality food with the exception of the sugar-loaded bottled juices available. No fresh juice at all.

Also a bottle of water in the room costs $8.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter

Reception was efficent and helpful. Location is very central and breakfast was a good start to the day. The swimming pool looked very inviting but because of time constraints were unable to use perhaps next time. Would certainly recommend the Novotel to family and friends.

Easy to find, quick check-in and onsite parking availability. Had bought a package deal 1 night & tickets to Lautrec Exhibition, direct through hotel. Travelled with elderly mother, so need twin room, none were available at the time, was offered an Executive King room that had a sofa bed.. OK. On entering the room the sofa bed was not made up.. so rang housekeeping, they advised that we would could either use the "day bed" with a sheet and blanket, or move rooms. So opted for a new room as the day bed was only big enough for a child. After around a half hour or more of waiting, eventually was taken to another room. Sofa bed was made up while we were at the exhibition. Has dinner at the restaurant which was nice, returned to room for tea/coffee only to have one mug. Again Housekeeping was contacted.. after waiting again way too long eventually received an extra mug.. Rooms were clean, bathroom bright & shiny. Window view to the street was ordinary, given the years of filth build up on the outside of the windows. Overall a bit ordinary for such a high rating hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor for possible views. Level 2 looks over the street awning.

I've come to the conclusion that Hotels in Canberra don't have to try very hard as there's always plenty of demand for accommodation in Australia's capital. Not that the Novotel is bad, just that it could be a lot better.

Good things first:

Clean room, good choice at the breakfast buffet, friendly staff, pillow menu (chose a latex pillow but it was much harder than my own, unfortunately), good furniture in the room.

Now the not so good:

Cheap fittings in the bathroom (shower shelf almost falling off the wall, poor quality tapware), uncomfortable bed (looked like it should have been good but wasn't), cramped gym, errors in the bill (tried to charge me for two at breakfast when I was alone).

Personally I don't think it's good enough for a hotel charging $250 a night for room only.

We have stayed at the canberra novotel several times, as we always try to stay either here or the crowne plaza when in canberra due to their convenient locations and our consistently pleasant stays at both properties.

The location is fantastic - with a huge shopping mall, multiplex cinema, many restaurants and takeaways and mini marts all within a 5 minute walk.

We arrived at 10:30am and were surprised to be checked in straight away. All the staff members we encountered were very pleasant and provided good service.

As always, we really enjoyed their beautiful indoor pool area, complete with spa and sauna. Pool towels are provided poolside, so you don't need to take towels from the room.

The room was exactly what you would expect from a 4 1/2 star chain hotel - clean and adequate, nothing exceptional, but no problems either. A few of the channels on our tv were very fuzzy and difficult to watch. The bathroom was clean and perfectly fine.

The breakfast buffet was included in our room rate. It was fine - not incredible, but plenty to fill us up. There were a few minor service issues at breakfast as it was very busy and full (ran out of plates, eggs, milk in the coffee machine), but staff were all pleasant and doing their best.

We will continue to stay at the novotel and would recommend it to others, especially if you want to have the convenience of being in the heart of the city and able to walk everywhere.

We stayed in Canberra Novotel for a one night minibreak in Canberra. The location was in the close to everything. The room on the 7th floor was clean and had a pleasent view. The Staff were efficient and welcoming. The booking came with breakfast which exceeded my expectations with everything you could possibly hope for. Although crowded the staff did very well clearing tables and replacing expended trays of food. Wonderful ...Recommend Highly....We will stay here again....

Room Tip: Higher floors get the best views and are quieter.
