This is the second time we have stayed at the Novotel Canberra in conjunction with an exhibition at the National Gallery - tickets are included in price of stay. On both occasions it has been excellent value (good breakfast also included), plus on this occasion free internet. Room was good, staff faultless - even arranged good weather for us!! I hope they continue with the free internet (I believe it is on a trial). I am sure most people are like us and just want to possibly briefly check with home or family and not do hours of downloading, etc. So many hotels provide free internet these days (especially overseas) that it now seems mean when you come across a hotel that doesn't. We would recommend staying there regardless of an exhibition being on. Location also great.

I've lost count of the number of times I've stayed at the Novotel in Canberra over the past 12 months. I've always found the staff to be friendly, relaxed and professional. Rooms are very functional for a short/business stay although some bathrooms are a bit tired. Cleaning not always as thorough as it should be.
So why have I chosen to review the hotel now?
On my most recent stay I was kept awake until 3am by the constant 'doof doof' of music from (I assume) the 'Kremlin' bar on the ground floor of the hotel building - and I was on Level 5! The bar's not a part of the hotel - so not really their fault - but it was mighty annoying (and not the first time it's happened to me).
So, while I have no hesitation in recommending the Novotel as probably the best buy in Canberra in its price range I'd advise anyone who's planning to stay there to beware the Kremlin and, if possible, get a room on a higher floor and/or at the northern end of the building (away from the lake). Sleep well!

A good stay linked with the Toulouse -Lautrec exhibition at the NGA (Novotel was a sponsor of this event). We were disappointed by the first room we were shown - the 'European' sink/bathroom arrangement seemed odd to us - the balcony would have been welcome had it not been raining heavily. Jillian at reception was very friendly and helpful in finding us an alternative room that was perfectly adequate for a short stay. The restaurant is OK - kangaroo was well cooked. Breakfast good, though the machine coffee is a let down.

Great hotel for the business traveller. Quite new rooms and central location. Lots of dining options in the area and quick checkout. The bed was particularly comfortable compared with other places I have stayed in.

I am a frequent business traveller to Canberra and this is the hotel of my choice if not accompanied with my wife because not every room has a kitchenette here. This luxury hotel is close to just everything, it's in the heart of the city. Very nice rooms, good sleep, good restaurant, good service and a very good experience.
The only thing that I don't like here is to see the sink at the entrance of the room with kitchenette.

We stayed one night in Canberra, to take advantage of the Cultural Package. It was good value - with two tickets to the Toulouse-Lautrec Exhibition at the National Gallery and a hot buffet breakfast for two included in the price. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable. For sleeping, you have a choice of pillow, with two soft and two firm, pillows on the bed. Loved the large shower recess and great shower. (I dislike showers over a bath.) Our room on the fifth floor faced away from the main road and onto a bus terminal at the rear of the building - so no view to speak of. Parking was an additional $18 per day for valet parking.
We visited the NGA on a Monday - not too many people, so less crowds made the viewing easier.

We were given an awesome corner room for our three night stay there, and everything was excellent. As I was moving out of Canberra and staying at Novotel temporarily we had quite a number of bags and suitcases, which the concierge got upstairs in record speed. The room was bright and clean, and had two walls of windows which showed the lovely Civic view (of Sydney and Melbourne Building to the left/ and the clock, and the ANU to the right). Perhaps the only downside to that particular room/floor is that the hall carpet had rather odd water stains, as though there had been a flood.

The breakfast buffet was satisfying as always, with good healthy options and good unhealthy ones. And as Novotel is in a central location, it was easy to walk to Canberra Centre or any of the surrounding little cafes and restaurants for lunch or dinner. Lots of convenience stores around the area as well, catering to the hotel and the bus terminal, of course.

The best part about the hotel was the FREE INTERNET! A rarity in Canberra, I must say. They're doing it on trial, and I do hope they don't take it away.

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room and make sure the wifi signal is strong!
