“Inbetween Hyatt and Park Hyatt”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2009

The title of the review can be explained by the fact that the customer service of the hotel was outstanding and places it above most standard Hyatt hotels, however, the tired feel of the hotel never quite allows for a Park Hyatt experience (Park Hyatt is the higher level of Hyatt hotels).

From the bell boys, to reception (fantastic Stephen!), the customer service was spot on. Very polite, friendly, everything that could be expected. We had a nice lunch at the restaurant where the food was modern Australian (International mixture of flavours), but like another reviewer pointed out, it could have had more local produce as Canberra is surrounding by a well regarded farming community providing excellent foods. Our standard King room was spacious, glorious bathroom, relaxing.

The hotel itself has a faded appearance, the choice of carpet colours (or is it the age) doesn't give a pampering feel. There was a nice pianist and high tea when we stayed. Because the hotel is the only 5 star hotel in Canberra, many locals come to the restaurant / lounge which is fine - but for our high tea it seemed that the girls were a little over run by the shear number of people and could have made a tiny little more effort to smile a little. Aside from this morning tea event, the hotel was quite.

But that's a little gripe on an otherwise enjoyable stay.

This is one of the most agreable hotels I have every stayed at. The building is low-rise and well arranged, the rooms are big and extremely comfortable, the service excellent. The menu in the restaurant could be improved - a bit too international bland given the richness of local produce.

I stayed one night on business--was given a very large room. The hotel is old and although the rooms have been redecorated/upgraded, the heating/air conditioning system has not which means you have not so great control over the temperature and essentially no control over the fan speed. The bathroom had no universal/flexible plug for electric razors. Room was reasonably quiet. Service at the bar was awful, and in general, the service was only fair--undertrained staff and too few of them. This supposedly the only 5-star hotel in Canberra. Probably not worth the price.

Having driven past this hotel many times previously, I was very intrigued to see if the Hyatt really was all that it was cracked up to be.

From what I saw, I was very impressed. The staff were excellent. Incredibly helpful and polite -from check-in to check-out and everything in between. I was there for a wedding, and the staff were fantastic. Nothing was a problem. They also looked quite happy to be working there too. The staff were top notch, although the knickerbocker outfits were a little outlandish.

The rooms were incredibly spacious (especially the bathroom!!), although as some other reviewers have commented, they did look a little tired and due for a refurb.

The dinner at the wedding I attended was fantastic. The breakfast at Promenade the next morning was quite nice - a bit above the normal hotel breakfast standard, but then again you do pay a premium, so to be expected.

The only thing that was slightly concerning was the number of police officers wandering around the place. I learned later there was a dignitary there, but it's not quite the sight you want to see when you're trying to unwind.

Nonetheless, well recommended, and would come back (providing it's not too pricey).

This place is a pretentious hole. The abrupt check in girl was dismissive after I answered "thanks but no thanks" to their valet car parking service. When I asked where I should park for my room, her full directions were "you can park around the side if you want". Even though I mentioned that I had not stayed at the hotel before ,she could not be bothered to provide any directions about how to get in to the hotel from the car park. (Note there is ample free parking on the north side of the hotel, but only two entrances at the front (east) an back (west) of the extensive building.
The rooms are nice, but very expensive for their cramped size. Some of the staff are genuinely polite and helpful, but the majority appear to revel in being pretentious, as if this adds to the prestige of the hotel.
As the Hyatts add says, its close to everything, but only if your world is old parliament, or new parliament house. Apart from that there is nothing within walking distance. No other restaurants, pubs, shops anything. If you have a car you can drive, but walking is a hike especially in the stinking hot Aust summer, or Canberas famous fridgid winters.
The buffet was your normal RSL fare, but of course at 5 star prices. The menu selections were boring and unimaginative (Thai green chicken curry, one of my favorites when done well but the Hyatts version was insipid, not to mention the crunchy cooked, but then dried out rice)
Do your self a favour, steer clear of this hotel that can boast about the esoteric while ignoring the practicalities of what makes a good hotel great. In these times of competition for the tourist dollar the Hyatt Canberra really needs to get focused.

This hotel is beautiful. The lobby, dining etc are absolutely gorgeous While i agree that the decor of the rooms are a little outdated, they are huge with a massive desk, lounge, huge bed, and flat screen tv. The bathroom is huge and the shower is amazing (although i feel guilty with the water restrictions and all). Towels and bathrobes provided are fluffy and comfortable.

We decided one night to have the buffet for dinner. It was amazing, with all you can eat fresh oysters, crabs, prawns, octopus salad, pasta, salads and that was just the starters. The dessert section had over 16 types of dessert!

Here is a letter I just sent the Hyatt which pretty much sums up my experience:

My husband and I stayed in your hotel the weekend of 3rd to 6th Oct. and while the décor and gardens of the hotel are how I’d expect a 5 star hotel to be I felt the staff were off their game from cleaning standards to managing breakfast queues to applying bogus charges both before and after checkout.

Admittedly it was not that big a deal queuing for breakfast the morning after daylight savings came in which is one thing, but being so disorganized as to have a massive 30 minute queue going the next morning as well is another entirely. Here are a few suggestions to avoid such mismanagement in the future, which presumably you already know: open another room, employ a few more staff or get the ones you have to clear tables promptly, extend breakfast to 11am on public holiday weekends or don’t have check out so early. I see you extended breakfast back to 5:30am during school holidays when clearly you actually needed to extend it the opposite direction.

As for the laughable special corner in the promenade café where the chef could make Eggs Benedict etc. a chef who didn’t even know Eggs Benedict is called Eggs Florentine when it has no meat, and who not only had no spinach or any vegetables in stock but no hollandaise sauce! If I wanted a plain poached egg then that’s what I would have requested. Not exactly the kind of service I expect from somewhere with a 5 star rating.

Normally I wouldn’t waste my time with any of these petty complaints but you seem so proud of your ‘only hotel in Canberra with a 5 star rating’ tag, what I would most like to draw your attention to is being incorrectly charged (twice) for a mystery mini bar item that
1. We did not consume and
2. Does not even match the cost of any item actually on the mini bar price list, either with or without GST.

What’s most annoying about this is I pointed it out at check out and was assured it was taken care of and then on Friday 10th October I receive a receipt in the post showing that someone took the charge out of my credit card anyway. What part of “we did not use the mini bar at all” did your reception staff not understand? Or could it be some of your staff are perhaps ‘on the take’? I also heard them try to charge another patron for a breakfast for which she had pre paid.

I phoned on Friday 10th October and on the unavailability of a duty manager spoke with a man on reception who said the charge will be reversed immediately, and whom agreed it is not a charge that is the exact cost of anything on the mini bar list but as yet (15th) I see no sign of it on my online banking.

So for the third time, we did not use the mini bar and want the unauthorized $17 you took from my credit card refunded forthwith.

All I say is it’s a good job for you I am not from the hotel star rating board and certainly couldn’t recommend your hotel to the many international travelers I encounter.

Yours etc.
