We loved the old world feel and decor of this hotel and found the staff pleasant and helpful . We stayed in a Heritage room which was very clean, comfortable and well-presented. Plenty of wardrobe space, immaculate bathroom and wonderfully comfortable bed and we could even open the windows if we wished. There was plenty of parking and we were within walking distance of the Australian War Memorial. Short drives took us to Mt Ainsley, the Canberra Centre and Parliament House.
We enjoyed breakfast and a tasty reasonably-priced dinner in the Ainsley Bar & Bistro on the ground floor and really appreciated the books in our room and being able to read up on the history of the hotel. All in all a very pleasant if too short stay. We would definitely consider staying here again on our next visit to Canberra.

We were booked into this hotel through our government accommodation service. Never Again will I stay there. The bistro menu was not what was written. Asked for Bread cob, told not available just garlic Bread, fine, then asked for the Lamb Shanks, not available, why advertise something if it is not available, why not print a temporary menu. Went to bar at 9.30pm, but the staff were too busy cleaning up to serve. The Gaming room consisted of about 8 very old card machines which were not entertaining. Not to mention the bottle shop was not open.
Finally the the worst experience. Went to bed at about 10.00pm and could clearly hear people talking outside in the courtyard, could not sleep, I put up with this until enough was enough, at 1.30am opened my room door and asked the people to go elsewhere and talk, this worked for about 30 minutes. They continued to talk and laugh through out the night, I then realised it must have been the hotel night staff. I finally got about 2 hours sleep at 4.00am. The arear directly below our room was being renovated, and work started 0730. I didn't bother mentioning this to the very young man at reception when I checked out, I don't think it would have made any difference the damage had already been done. As already stated, I will never stay at Olims Hotel Canberra again.

We've stayed in Olims on a few occasions and always been satisfied. On the last trip on a motorcycle, they allowed me to park the bike under the front portico, which meant that it was on CCTV and visual for the night staff. Olims has been around awhile and the old front block is a bit of a rabbit warren, but that's part of the fun of your stay. Buffet breakfast is normally included in the package and is standard Accor quality. Canberra Central and a few good restaurants are within walking distance and the attached bistro is perfectly adequate for a casual meal.

Stayed for one night and was disappointed with the tiny room and the noise from the airconditioners on the roof outside (if you a light sleeper , avoid room 133) . No view except the roof and those airconditioning units, but this is typical of hotels who tend to give lone travellers the crappy rooms! However, the room was spotless and the bed comfortable. The TV was HUGE (about the same size as the bathroom!!!) and the bathroom newly renovated so was a pleasure to use. The staff were lovely both at check in and check out. Particular mention must be made of the ladies in the breakfast room who were delightful, friendly and helpful even at a really busy time. Slightly surprised by no room service food but you could have room service breakfast. Very convenient location, walkable to town centre for dinner and easy drive to attractions. Good parking, well-lit . Easy to find.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Mercure Canberra, a part of Canberra's history Originally known as the Hotel Ainslie, Mercure Canberra was built to provide accommodation for public servants relocating to Canberra to support the transfer of the Commonwealth Parliament. It is one of eight remaining government built hotels or hostels from Canberra's first stage of development in the 1920s and is listed in the Register of the National Estate. Mercure Canberra is historically significant for its important role in the development of North Canberra and the forging of its community identity. While maintaining many original features, the hotel embraces the need for 21st century comforts to ensure you feel welcome and have an enjoyable stay. Our 129 guest rooms are well appointed and have been decorated in keeping with the heritage style of the building. Our Standard rooms are located in the Heritage wing, with the layout and style of room not changing from the hotels' original days. For those looking for a more modern layout, you may wish to select one of our Superior or Deluxe Loft rooms in the newer part of the building. Our guests have the option to dine at our onsite Courtyard Restaurant serving modern Australian cuisine in the evening and a choice of Continental or Buffet breakfast in the morning. Those looking for a more casual dining experience can enjoy Bistro style meals from our Olims Bar & Bistro, a favourite spot for hotel guests and locals to mingle, serving Craft Beers & Cider from our very own Lovedale Brewery Our location is ideal. 600m from the Australian War Memorial commemorating those who serve our country, both past and present. Most of Canberra's National Attractions are within 10 minutes' drive from the hotel and the CBD is and easy 10 minute walk away and offers a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as shops and a Dendy Movie Cinema.
