We first went to Canberra in 1996 and stayed at this very same hotel in the loft rooms. Have stayed in other places since, but we were traveling here with my brother-in-law and his wife and I got a very good deal on the standard queen rooms. And we were going to be there 4 nights. Our stays at Accor Hotels have always been good, so I booked. On checking in I was very surprised to find we had been upgraded to loft rooms - I was really pleased and our relatives were thrilled. It gave us lots more room, a place for 4 of us to have drinks or coffee and a nice area for my husband to do some work in the mornings before setting out on our day's touring. Other reviews here reported that the beds were very comfortable and I definitely agree. Nothing like a really good sleep to give you a good day of visiting museums, the War Memorial and both Old and New Parliament House. We didn't eat at the hotel, but I'm pleased to read a recent review that found the food better than some older reviews. We did have a couple of "glitches" - my brother-in-law found the second day after another couple moved in next door that his wife got a cold shower in the morning. We had some minor problems with the heating (it was really cold these days) and found the last night never quite got warm enough. Other than these little things, the staff were all pleasant, helpful, responded quickly to a couple of calls (we did something to the TV and it just went blank!), the rooms were clean and comfortable. And I should mention there is easy parking.
By the way, Pizza Gusto on Lonsdale Street has the BEST pizzas! They triple rise the dough so the bases are light and thin! We brought back 3 for the 4 of us and enjoyed a bottle of wine from the bottle shop attached to the hotel. Great to be able to come back from a tiring day and enjoy a meal in the room.

Room Tip: We had #519 and #709. Both had nice views of the courtyard, were quiet and bright.

This was our third stay at the Mercure Canberra. I was offered a room upgrade based on my Le Club Accor status - it is always pleasant to be acknowledged for your loyalty. We find the rooms very comfortable, and while a little chilly this trip, always enjoy sitting on the verandah. The location is terrific, quiet neighbourhood and close to Canberra Civic Centre .

The only downside to our stay was the inconsiderate behaviour of fellow guests who woke us in the middle of the night by yelling in the corridor on the way to their room. The hotel can't be held responsible for this behaviour, but perhaps the design of the hotel contributes to the problem. All roads lead to Rome so to speak as both parking areas and entrance/exits to the hotel necessitate a walk through the ground level accommodation areas or courtyard of the hotel. Perhaps some Ssshhh! signs strategically placed at the entrance to the accommodation wings at night may prompt guests to be more considerate.

The Mercure is our favourite place to stay in Canberra but next time we'll request a room on an upper floor.

Visited Canberra for the Turner Exhibition. Needed a central quality hotel. Mercure suited us fine. Dining menu for the evening was predictable, so didnt really inspire us to dine in. Breakfast was very good, however, too much food prepared ahead, so tended to be available for longer than required. The Accor brand has made a tired hotel into a gem. Certainly recommend this to other visitors to Canberra.

We choose The Mecure because it was close to the War Memorial, it was very central to the main part of Canberra also. The rooms where neat & tidy. It was very cool & the air conditioning in the room was sufficient to keep the room warm, it was fairly cold in other parts of the resort. The breakfast was nice but the coffee was horrible, the chef kept the food coming. We had dinner at the bistro & the food was delicious though a little expensive for bistro/pub food.

I found this hotel very comfortable. Considering it was a very old hotel it was well renovated and very modern with touches of the past. It was well situated not very far from the city centre. The only drawback was it did not have free wifi.

Overall my stay was quite pleasant with the staff being helpful and friendly. The room I had was standard, but great value for money. All the facilities, air cond, tv, etc were in great working order. The only thing I was slightly disappointed with was the bottles of water that were on our bedside tables. I thought they were complimentary, but were actually quite expensive. Overall my stay was quite pleasant, and I would definitely stay there again.

From the minute my colleagues and I arrived, we recieved a warm greeting and a swift checkin. The room amenities were excelllent and clean and the hotel itself is only a short drive from the city center.
Breakfast the next morning was excellent and the rustique hotel's charm really came out in the morning sun.

All in all definately worth a longer stay.

Welcome to Mercure Canberra, a part of Canberra's history Originally known as the Hotel Ainslie, Mercure Canberra was built to provide accommodation for public servants relocating to Canberra to support the transfer of the Commonwealth Parliament. It is one of eight remaining government built hotels or hostels from Canberra's first stage of development in the 1920s and is listed in the Register of the National Estate. Mercure Canberra is historically significant for its important role in the development of North Canberra and the forging of its community identity. While maintaining many original features, the hotel embraces the need for 21st century comforts to ensure you feel welcome and have an enjoyable stay. Our 129 guest rooms are well appointed and have been decorated in keeping with the heritage style of the building. Our Standard rooms are located in the Heritage wing, with the layout and style of room not changing from the hotels' original days. For those looking for a more modern layout, you may wish to select one of our Superior or Deluxe Loft rooms in the newer part of the building. Our guests have the option to dine at our onsite Courtyard Restaurant serving modern Australian cuisine in the evening and a choice of Continental or Buffet breakfast in the morning.
