“Our stay at Olims Hotel Canberra”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2011

We arrived late afternoon on 11/10/11 for our 2 night stay. We were greeted at the front desk and quickly and efficiently 'checked in' to our Heritage room. We were even helped with our luggage as our room was upstairs. We found the room to be quite comfortable, the bathroom was well set up. There was a wall mounted TV, the viewing channels only had 'free to air', no Foxtel. As the hotel has recently been refurbished, we presume that Foxtel weill be installed at a later time, as it is already in other areas of the hotel. Our booking included breakfast, but this turned out to be 'continental' only,, a hot breakfast was $11pp extra. This should be advised in booking information. Also the serving plates were cold, which made the hot food get cold very quickly. The hotel is not far from the city centre, about a 10 to 15 minute walk. There is also a regular bus service if the weather conditions are unfavorable. Overall, we had a pleasant and relaxing stay at Olims. We have stayed at this hotel on previous occasions, and would definitely consider staying again should we visit Canberra on a future occasion

directions on how to find the Hotel were a little off. We had to ring and check where we were. Plus name on the outside didnt match the name on our booking confirmation so we actually drove past the Hotel - twice.

I first stayed at Olims some several years ago and was not impressed. At that time it was a tired, dirty and miserable hole just out of the centre of Canberra.
However, it has been recently renovated (in fact the workers are still in a couple of parts of the hotel) and it is now a nice, quiet place to stay. The rooms are large and warm, the bed was very comfortable and the general ambience of the place was warm and welcoming. The staff at reception are helpful and polite and for value for money, I highly recommend it. The hotel is a few minurtes walk from Civic (the shopping contre of Canberra) along a broad tree lined avenue. The walk is pleasant in the Spring, probably not so in Winter. I didn't eat at the hotel, but I had a couple of beers in the bar. Again, pleasant, reasonable beer (my favorite tipple is German style beer but sadly there was none on tap or available in bottles -but that's a personal preference). All in all, I would stay there again and would also recommend it to my friends.

We went during the Labor Day long weekend so accommodation was scarce in Canberra and we had to pay a premium rate (average $280/night). The hotel is rather old and some sections were under renovation. It's a 3-star hotel so do not expect too much. Some parts of the walls in the balcony were mouldy and peeling. Corridors were not heated. The aircon (not centralised heating) took a long time to heat up the room. Buffet continental breakfast was average, lots of packaged items that you can get from the supermarket (the croissants were lovely though!) Overall, it's good enough if you don't plan to hang out in the hotel much.

Location is the main advantage here if you want to be close to the heart of Canberra. This hotel has a public tavern attached to it ( which we were not aware of ) and our room was above the bar and outdoor area so a fair bit of noise carried.
Also the hotel was fully booked out as it was in the middle of the school holidays and Floriade , yet the hotel restruant was not open for dinner on Sat / Sun nights, only weeknights apparently. We were not impressed with that

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience.

Our hotel bar and bistro is available for both in house guests and the public. I am disappointed to hear that you were not advised of all facilities available to you during your stay, however all information is available in our room compendiums and reception is available 24 hours to assist with any guest enquiries.

We do get rather busy during school holidays, especially when it coincides with the famous Floriade Festival. We do our best to not utilise the 2 rooms near the beer garden.

I am surprised that you noted our Courtyard restaurant being closed on Saturdays as this is not the case. We offer 2 dining experiences, our bistro which is opened 7 days a week and our a la carte Courtyard Restaurant which is closed on Sunday and Mondays only.

Once again, thank you for the opportunity to clarify and share this information with other travellers.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Mercure Canberra, a part of Canberra's history Originally known as the Hotel Ainslie, Mercure Canberra was built to provide accommodation for public servants relocating to Canberra to support the transfer of the Commonwealth Parliament. It is one of eight remaining government built hotels or hostels from Canberra's first stage of development in the 1920s and is listed in the Register of the National Estate. Mercure Canberra is historically significant for its important role in the development of North Canberra and the forging of its community identity. While maintaining many original features, the hotel embraces the need for 21st century comforts to ensure you feel welcome and have an enjoyable stay. Our 129 guest rooms are well appointed and have been decorated in keeping with the heritage style of the building. Our Standard rooms are located in the Heritage wing, with the layout and style of room not changing from the hotels' original days. For those looking for a more modern layout, you may wish to select one of our Superior or Deluxe Loft rooms in the newer part of the building. Our guests have the option to dine at our onsite Courtyard Restaurant serving modern Australian cuisine in the evening and a choice of Continental or Buffet breakfast in the morning. Those looking for a more casual dining experience can enjoy Bistro style meals from our Olims Bar & Bistro, a favourite spot for hotel guests and locals to mingle, serving Craft Beers & Cider from our very own Lovedale Brewery Our location is ideal. 600m from the Australian War Memorial commemorating those who serve our country, both past and present. Most of Canberra's National Attractions are within 10 minutes' drive from the hotel and the CBD is and easy 10 minute walk away and offers a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants, as well as shops and a Dendy Movie Cinema.
