Owner description: See the beautiful, the rare and the unexpected at the National Library of Australia on the shores of Canberra's Lake Burley Griffin. The ever-changing Treasures Gallery gives you free access to some of Australia's most moving stories. Make the journey and be intrigued, surprised, challenged and amazed by the stories these unique treasures tell. Highlights include material from the 1967 referendum and the campaign for Indigenous rights, as well as intriguing items from the life of poet Henry Lawson, including his fob watch and two of his pens. Enjoy unparalleled access to Australia's documentary heritage including books, serials, maps, newspapers, music and ephemera. Take in an exhibition, join a tour, browse the bookshop, or enjoy a bite to eat at Bookplate Cafe, taking in the lake-side views. Exhibition galleries are open from 10am to 5pm daily (except Christmas Day and Good Friday). Hours vary for the reading rooms, NLA Bookshop and Bookplate. Please see nla.gov.au/visit-us/opening-hours to plan your visit.

Its a bustling but comfortable casual cafe, but is classy enough for most social occasions for a coffee or lunch. The stained glass windows add wonderful character. As it is right inside the gallery, you have easy access to the rich bookshop, the gallery itself and the exhibitions.

Even if you have just one hour spare in Canberra, visit the National Library - especially the Treasures Gallery. When I first visited this gallery I had to look twice at a few of the treasures - that's actually a letter written by Charles Dickens? Patrick White wore those glasses? That's one of the original scripts of Waltzing Matilda? If you're keen on historical artifacts then you'll love this library.

Excellent library with a fabulous archive. A treasure trove of our nation's greatest literature. Also contains volumes and other items from around the globe. Has that distinct "library" smell which I love - and is quiet like a good library should be.
