“Excellent Thai Food, fast and friendly service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 31, 2013

We ate here this evening before the Cyndi Lauper concert. What this restaurant might lack in ambience it more than made up for with fabulous food and fast, friendly service!

We had spring rolls and four main courses which were all delicious. My favourite was the Thai Green Curry but I tasted them all, just can't remember the names now. Sorry. All excellent.

The friend rice was extra good, very flavourful and served in an insulated bucket so it kept nice and hot.

All round a great meal and four very satisfied customers. Highly recommended.

“Northern style Thai food true to its Lao roots”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

We purchased a voucher to eat at this restaurant and had four set menus to choose from. We love Lao food so we tried the Northern Thai set menu and we found the larb, sticky rice and papaya salad very authentic. The complementary glass of red wine was pretty cheap and nasty and the banana roti a little too sweet for my spouse but all in all the food was pretty good for the price we paid. It was great to have comfortable chairs and a carpeted floor with pleasant decor.

“Amazing Thai!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013 via mobile

We first went to another Thai restaurant close by but it was packed and unlicensed. We then came to Rice.

The place was very quiet but I have to say the food was amazing, the service exemplary and the prices incredibly reasonable. This really is a hidden gem. It is upstairs from the street.

I would have to say this is some of the best Thai I've ever eaten.

This will be the top of our list when we return to Canberra.

“not thai”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 8, 2013

its suppose to be a modern thai place with some thai fusion cuisine. The place was really nice with great ambience . Clean spacious well tendered and service was prompt efficient, polite and knowledgable. theowner obviouly new his front of restaurant requirements!!! Well done!!!

We ordered todd man fish cakes, satay chicken, and samosas. For mains we had green curry chicken, red curry beef, som tam (papaya salad) and massaman beef and larb. We also had some phat Thai noodles. Seems alot of food for 6, yes but we really dig thai food

Having been invovled with thai cusinese for the past 15 odd years I will admit i know my thai food. Thailand also happens to be my family's favourite vaccation destination. So expectations were high!!

Todd man must have come out of a package, it was bland, with no texture and the cut beans were missing!!! Soooo bad. It did not even have any taste of th ered curry paste. Satay was cooked to a succulent finnish but it was very ordinary and would have passed as chicken pieces on a stick grilled. There just was not any seasoning of cummins and corriader and the charred coconut cream expected in a good satay. Kid were hungry and ate it all though.

The curry were much better however the massaman beef must have just been cooked and the chucks of steak was tougt and the flavours had not been allowed to simmer thru. The potatoes in the massamann was good!!

Let me distinguish between stirr fry and wok flamed. . The first are ingredients conveneint placed in a wok to cook allowing through mixing and combining of the ingredients. The result is a complex blend of flavours with a smooth palate finnish. This is how phat thai should come out if done well. The phat thai was obviouly cooked in a hurry as it was clear that the garlic chives, crushed peanuts and sprouts were haphazardly tossed in with no care to make sure it blended in together with the "soy and oyster" sauce.

wok flame is a more skilled cooking technique requiring mastery over the heat applied to the wok and transfered of the heat to the food. If done well the food has the taste of the flames in the wok!!

Larb needs to have the meat chopped not minced and it need to have just the right amount of roasted rice flour tossed in with the final touch of fish sauce and lemon / lime juice added just at the end for that larb tang / bite in the flavour.

Larb is a food standard of the Thai Kingdom and any Thai who professes to be able to cook Thai must know how to make somtam and larbd as it has as its basic key skills required for for blending sweet with sour with astringent !!! and then the heat from the chilli. Without that its just not Thai cuisine.. Just like without the Vietnamese fish sauce vinageret, its not vietnameses!!!

Rice tappas is sure to dispappoint as it did with us that nite!!!
