Having enjoyed a beautiful meal at Saffron in Manuka some time ago, we thought we would give the Kingston branch a try. Our meals had well balanced spices and nice crunchy salads and crispy potatoes, but the chicken was a little dry and the lamb a bit sheepy. Not sure if it was an off-night but we were told quite a few things that had taken our fancy on the menu were not available, which was rather a shame and perhaps we would have gone elsewhere had we known that. Hot chocolate for dessert was delicious though. Probably the only good one I have had in the last 15 years. (The last was in the now closed Blues Cafe in Katoomba. I still remember if fondly!). Service a bit transient as usual but the guy in charge pushed it along fairly regularly which kept it within reasonable bounds.

Looking for dinner after attending a football match at Manuka Oval on a Saturday night, our choice in Kingston (artespresso) was not available, so browsed the local restaurants. Saffron seemed stylish and attractive, with an interesting menu. However, it is quite large, and there appeared to be only three waitstaff (who were very professional, but were literally run off their feet) on a very busy Saturday night. After a long wait, finally got a glass of wine and some bread, but an hour and a half later, still no sign of our meals. As we could wait no longer, we cancelled the main courses and settled the bill. The staff were apologetic and pleasant, but it may be better for the restaurant not to accept customers when they clearly had insufficient staff to cope with the demand - we noted a few of the other patrons equally annoyed or puzzled around us. Given the good reviews on this website, we might have hoped for something a little better than takeaway pizza at home. We cannot comment on the food, but if you are thinking of going to Saffron in Kingston, it might be best avoided at busy times.

We visited Canberra two weeks ago and wanted a restaurant for dinner on Sunday night. After reading reviews recommending the Kingston Saffron restaurant over Manuka were disappointed to learn that Kingston does not open on Sundays - so we booked Manuka instead. There are quite alot of choices of both Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food, which we really enjoy as well as the more "recognisable" dishes.
The restaurant quickly filled and some fellow diners told us they eat there regularly and that the set menu/banquet was very generous, so unless we were really hungry to order individual dishes which we did. There was only one waiter who did an excellent job - service was prompt from orders being taken to delivery of our meals. We thought that $10 per bottle for BYO was a little excessive but perhaps that's the norm for Canberra?
Although our meals were OK they were nothing out of the ordinary - in fact they were just that "ordinary". Perhaps we were expecting too much! We ordered herb bread, zucchini flowers, a lamb dish and the pork dish - I think. As I said none of them were memorable. I would not return to the Saffron at Manuka and would not recommend it. Although the service was very good the price did not justify a pretty ordinary, disappointing meal.

We went for dinner on a Sunday night and came out particularly pleased. Opting for the set menu was the way to avoid to chose and give the chef the chance to surprise us. Indeed, the menu was various and with distinctive mediterranean/middle eastern flair. The service was also professional and this made our night one to remember. The set menu price at $39 is very competitive considering that in other establishment with that sort of money you only get a steak.

We ate at this restaurant whilst visiting Canberra, the food was excellent most of the dishes were mediterranean based. the tangine I had was very good. Although there was a childrens menu the choice was limited so the waitress arranged for a special meal for the 6 year old who was with us.

We could not fault the food or the service.
