“Understated Gallery - A Gem!”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

We have been to the National Portrait Gallery a couple of times and it is one of Canberra's most underrated attractions. The gallery rooms are well laid out and follow historical periods. Whether you are a fan of politics, famous people, popular culture or sports, this gallery showcases the people that have had a profound impact on creating modern Australia. There is something for everyone. We visited the "Elvis at 21" Exhibition and it was a fascinating insight into his life before he became famous. The photographs were stunning, and a reminder of simpler times. Our afternoon was completed with a fine coffee in the Gallery's cafe.

“Worth seeing”
Reviewed February 14, 2014

Very interesting history, and one of only 6 Portrait galleries in the world. I was lucky enough to catch a tour.

“a mirror into our soul”

great collection but we should have started with contemporary and worked backwards as we were more interested in current culture than interesting history. very engaging and we will do some more homework on some paintings, photos and artists.

“Fantastic gallery to visit”
Reviewed January 30, 2014

We visited this gallery for the first time because of the "Elvis at 21" photos exhibition. Good photos of Elvis before he became a superstar. But wish there were more photos of Elvis! The gallery has lots of interesting portraits which make a visit worthwhile even without a special exhibition. Gallery entry is free but you have to pay extra for Elvis! Free parking under the gallery was a bonus. There is also a very nice cafe & shop. We had lunch there & the food was delicious & great coffee.

“Fascinating”
Reviewed January 28, 2014

There is a lot of interesting portraits in this gallery. You are not allowed to take photos which is a bit disappointing as even in the Lourve you are allowed to take shots. It is not a very big place so you could look at it in a morning.
