“A must-visit in Canberra”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

The Portrait Gallery has so much to offer - you will never be disappointed! Firstly, it's a great piece of modern architecture in Canberra, so archi-lovers will enjoy the exterior, and interiors too. I am more drawn to portrait-style art, despite not being artsy at all, so I always enjoy a visit here! The current photographic portrait exhibition is just great.

Plus, it has a great gallery shop, and a nice cafe with a great aspect for some afternoon sun. It's easy to combine this with a visit to the National Gallery of Australia as well, to make an all-out great day.

“So many faces, so many stories, so little time”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

What a wonderful gallery with the most amazing exhibition of beautiful portraits. The chronological galleries are great and there are just so many stories to stop and read. I've got a list of reading ow to follow up on. A very relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

“INTERESTING ARCHITECTURE - LIMITED CONTENT”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

The gallery is an attractive modern building and the artwork on display provides an interesting insight into Australia's self image. No great art here and some of the "Australians" are really a bit more European than the credits disclose. Overall, an opportunity to put faces to,the names.

“Always fresh.”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

I make a point of stopping for a look every time I am in Canberra. This time there was a Photographic competition on display. A nice change of pace from the usual. Some of the explanatory notes are a hoot and could be published as a collection of trite nonsense. Some of the offerings in the prominent Australian women exhibit are a little puzzling. That of Cathy Freeman is a masterpiece and yet the work of Ita Buttrose is a little obscure. The choices of those ladies featured make little sense other than they were accessible. The buliding is fabulous and visitors should take time tojust sit in the foyer and look at the architecture.
