Yucatan Mayan Retreat, Ecohotel & Camping
Reviewed January 28, 2011

i wanted to stay here because it's in yokdzonot. i'm just kidding. but it sure is fun trying to pronounce it. the yucatan mayan retreat is not your normal lodging place. i would say it's more of a camp ground that offers a couple "suites" for the non-camping types.

i stayed here back in freezing december. got into cancun and went directly there. took 2nd class bus...yes, got into yokdzonot very late. it's about a 5 hour bus ride...many local stops and one stop by the mexican army. i was nervous upon arriving there because my spanish is terrible, and as mentioned very late, but to my surprise the town is t-i-n-y --everyone knows everyone, and they are all very helpful. daniel the staff was waiting for me! i felt terrible... oh, it is wise to purchase any drinks/food beforehand --it's like camping.

i stayed in the "suite" since sleeping in a tent is not my thing. the suite is more like a hut but with a flat tv...that's what i'm talking about (just kidding, didn't even turned it on). i loved it. very charming and clean. plenty of blankets. didn't have its own bathroom. there's a communal "outdoor" bathroom--normal bathroom, just outside - no roof.

i slept like a baby. woke up to a bunch of birds chirping and turkeys...

took a taxi to chichen Itza. paid 15 pesos. 15 minutes ride. chichen itza opens at 8am and the restaurant opens at 10am....there's a coffee shop but they only sell junk food/pastries. for backpackers, there's an area for you to check in your backpack.

thanks to daniel and owner jorge, who made my reservation, for making my stay awesome! :D

rates this place has no basis, or by facilities or by location. offer an encounter with nature, and what they have is just a small plot with two rooms, but in reality are in an environment inhabited by semi-urban workers.

Yucatan Mayan Retreat, Ecohotel & Camping is an independent touristic hotel project that has been hosting people from all over the world for two years already since 2009, successfully getting the best comments and reviews (from 90 to 95% of guests´ satisfaction of the whole Hotels chains in Chichen Itza Arqueological site!) in any website such as tripadvisor, etc. The ecohotel was set and built in a great and mystical rural mayan area in Yucatan, Mexico, full of natural fruit trees, a fantastic variety of plants and nature in order to please and show Guests the real mayan mexican villlages and the amazing natural attractions such as the cenote (sinkhole, natural well) that we have in our location that most of people do not get to see when choosing touristy and expensive hotelsto stay for vacationing! Therefore, Yucatan Mayan Retreat, Ecohotel & Camping is authentic, typical, traditional, original, etc.

Our rates are the lowest ones in the whole area! We even allow more that two persons in the accomodations without any extra charge! And we always drop the prices when requested! In other words we always help and support guests in any way! Our accomodations were built, designed and set up with the best materials and decorations for guests´ satisfaction!

We are mayan mexican people working for you! We are not semi urban workers ! We are 100% trained and educated to host you as you deserve it! Welcome to the Mayan World! Welcome to Yucatan Mayan Retreat, Ecohotel and Camping!

It was a great experience spending a night out there, and our host, Daniel, was nice and helpful. The place is a small compound located down a little village road. We stayed in the Mayan Deluxe House, which was comfortable and plenty of space for two people. Outside, there is a little pool, with lounging chairs and a hammock. Lying in the hammock in the Yucatecan jungle, listening to the birds in the evening, really let us know we were not in Brooklyn anymore. I felt very lucky to be there.

I'm not a camper, so for me, an ecohotel is probably as close to nature as I'm going to get. I definitely picked up some mosquito bites, but we were very happy with our stay there. Unfortunately, we arrived later than expected and didn't have time to visit the cenote.

The location is both a plus and a minus. Being off the beaten track is what makes it wonderful. But if you're going to Chichen Itza, it's not walking distance. The bus comes once or twice an hour, so plan some waiting time. We caught the bus around 8 a.m. and it still got us to Chichen Itza long before the tourist buses.

We went to the Yucatan Mayan Retrest for my husbands birthday.
We planned to visit Chichen Itza.
We own a casa in Chelem, Yucatan and we needed to get away from all the renovations.
What a great choice. Jorge and Erica were awesome hosts and I really loved their dogs Luc and Leah. I wasn't quite ready to camp so we stayed in their suite, it was so relaxing and comfortable. We just loved the rest of the property, especially the outdoor bathroom. Very well done Jorge and Erica. We would recommend the Mayan Retreat to anyone who is looking for something different.

I stayed here while in town to see Chichen Itza. it's a cute place, smaller than it looked from the pictures, but beautiful and peaceful. I stayed in a tent and thoroughly enjoyed waking up to a symphony of birds. The bathroom was my favorite - no ceiling, and several trees growing inside. You can walk or rent a bike to explore the village and swim in a refreshing cenote (sinkhole). Jorge was friendly and accommodating; he made me feel more like a friend than simply a customer.

The only thing that made this place a little less than ideal was transportation. It's far enough away from Piste and Chichen Itza that you have to take a bus or get a taxi; the busses are cheap but don't run that often, or at night, and the taxis from Chichen Itza are 120 pesos. On the other hand, you won't be spending a lot on lodging.

We stayed at the Yucatan Mayan retreat in March, 2010 while visiting Chichen Itza, and had a fantastic experience. We stayed in the Mayan House, which had a double bed and a double futon, fridge, coffee maker and A/C. The room was clean and very comfortable. Jorge, the owner, was extremely friendly and helpful with sightseeing recommendations. It's about a 10 minute walk from Yokzonodt Cenote, an amazing cenote that you can swim in. When we went, we were the only visitors there. The town of Yokzonodt itself is a tiny Mayan village with a small food store, and two food stands, one labeled "Pepsi," and one labeled "Coke."

The Mayan Yucatan Retreat has the free-standing Mayan house, a Mayan suite with attached bath, and several tents. The outdoor bathroom is beautiful, clean, and really cool (there's a tree growing next to the shower). There is also a shared kitchen for preparing meals if you want. It is incredibly peaceful, with no traffic noise and only jungle sounds at night.

It's about a 15 minute drive from the ruins at Chichen Itza and the town of Piste. If you have a rental car (which I would recommend for travel in this area, but it's not necessary) then transportation is easy. If you don't, there are a few options. The public bus runs every 30-60 minutes and is very affordable. There are frequent taxis passing by - quite a bit more expensive. There are shared taxis (recognizable by being a bit more run down than the individual taxis and usually having a couple of people in them) that are about the same price as the bus. Or, Jorge will take you for about the same price as a taxi.

I would highly recommend this place - it's peaceful, and a great value.

There are few places in the world that are perfect in every way. I have spent nearly four years travelling the world at different times and found at Yucatan Mayan Retreat a feeling of peace that is rare in our busy world. I stayed at first two nights to see the sites of Chichen Itza and then later came back for a four night stay to relax. Jorge is an amazing host/owner that will make your trip memorable. I recommend taking a swim in the cenote after which the town is named, walking around the village, visiting with the resident animals- turtles, birds, a rabbit plus two mini schnauzers Luke and Leia, and lounging in a hammock with a good book as much as possible. Paradise awaits!
