brilliant, brilliant. Value for money, good quality, epic taste & flavour. Although part of a huge chain, they seem to be able to uphold good standards. Cannot fault it.

You'd expect a chain restaurant to be pretty standard in terms of food and service- you'd be wrong. The service here and quality of food is consistently poor compared to other locations. Long queue times and even phoning for a takeaway involves waiting on the phone a long while. It's a shame but I avoid going to the Beckenham branch.

Nando's Beckenham restaurant is laid out a bit like a canteen - a room filled almost entirely with tables arranged in lines to maximise the number of customers they can fit in there; it doesn't supply an intimate environment for a heart-to-heart with your loved one. Instead, it supplies chicken. Vast amounts of chicken, coated in hot sauce of varying degrees of heat.

Although Nando's has a menu suggesting that the heat of the sauce will vary from lemon & garlic up to very hot, this is calibrated differently per restaurant. Or at least that's why when I had a hot bean pitta last night it gave me a little bit of tingling on my lips and caused me to hiccup a few times, whereas when I ordered the same heat in Islington a few years ago, I had to rush outside and purchase milk while weeping and being jeered at by my dining companion. Perhaps they assume the residents of suburbia are less keen on spice than those eating in central London.

It was packed at 7:30 on a Wednesday night when we visited: clearly the appetite of the people of Beckenham for peri peri chicken is massive. An hour or so later it was empty, so exercise some caution when visiting - you might find yourself without any space.

Service is fairly prompt: orders are taken at the bar at the back of the restaurant, rather than at your table, and then food arrives as and when it's cooked. We got everything within 15 minutes, despite the restaurant being rammed to the rafters. The chicken was very good; the sides (coleslaw, mashed potato and fries) much less so. The mash was flavourless, the fries were lacking in any joy (or salt) and the coleslaw, well, that was just coleslaw. (I'm going on my accomplices' views of the chicken - I stuck to a bean-based vegetable burger in a pitta, which was good - despite being a chicken restaurant, Nando's are kind enough to offer three different vegetarian alternatives, which is nice.) We ordered houmus as well, which was ok - it comes with a little bottle of peri peri sauce, which made things a bit hotter han necessary, but maybe I'm an old fuddy-duddy for complaining about hot sauce in houmus. Or hummus. Or however we're spelling it this week.

So: chicken is good. Sides less so, but that was never really their focus. Probably go for one level hotter on the spiciness scale than they suggest, if you're in the mood for something hot.
