We visited the Bukk Hills last month on a birding trip to Hungary. We stayed at the Hotel Nomad and had a wonderful experience. Although the weather was lousy (rainy and cold) , Barbara and the staff at the Hotel made the trip worthwhile. Barbara arranged for a guided birding trip with Roy Clark, an expat British birder who lives in the area. He did a great job and helped save the birding part of the visit.
If you stay at the Hotel, I would suggest taking the meal option with your room. Barbara's mother is a gourmet chef and prepares great breakfasts and wonderful Hungarian dinners. We are vegetarians and she prepared meals for us that were traditional, delicious and meatless! Barbara's brother helped with an excellent selection of wines.
The camping was not open when we visiting, but it looked quite interesting: funky amenities and family oriented services. For English speakers visiting Hungary, this is a great place to stay. Barbara and her brother speak excellent English. The historic city of Eger is nearby and well worth visiting. For birders, it is a great base for visiting both the Bukk National Park and the nearby Lake Tisa and the Hortobagy. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Room Tip: Would probably try for a room in the new building. It was not open during our visit.

I totally agree with the previous reviewers, this is the right place to stay when you are in the area. One of the best breakfast buffets I have ever experienced! Great dinners! The hospitality of the owners is truly exceptional. Even if the weather is a bit colder, you can find plenty of things to do either inside the hotel or outside. Children are most welcome, and they will never get bored there. T Don't forget your trout fishing rods since there are two nice little lakes with plenty of trouts!

Used as a regular base for birding in the Bukk Hills, this is near perfect. A lovely location, so friendly and helpfull and very comfortable. I thought it best we left after 3 days - the food is far too fantastic. Absolutely agree with the other reviews.

Great food, well organised, a swimming pool, quiet and a lovely setting. After a week on the road visiting lots of interesting towns in Romania and Hungary we wanted somewhere quite and green that the kids would enjoy. This is a family run affair and every guest is treated like a visitor, you almost feel like a family friend by the time you leave. The dinners are traditional hungarian fare (don't count the calories, just enjoy) and the breakfasts a great buffet.

Room Tip: Just tell Barbara what you want, if she has it available to suit your needs I'm sure she will do her best for you. We stayed in one of their Chalets which was slightly scruffy but perfect for our needs.

We'd heard good things about the Nomad, and none were true: it's BETTER than even the most laudatory review out there suggests. We'd meant to stay a short week and ended up lingering for more than two, finding it impossible to leave the beautiful surroundings, spectacular food and wine, and above all the great care we were offered by Barbara and her kind family. We have no Hungarian, so Barbara--whose English is truly near-native--helped us out with reservations and phone inquiries; she supplied us with maps and directions, and saw us off with a bottle of Eger's finest red. Her mother, whose German is more than serviceable, runs what must be one of the best kitchens in all of Hungary (and certainly the most generous, with the table groaning every morning and evening under all that delicious food). Highly, highly recommended, and we'll be back ourselves as soon as we can.
