We saw many signs advertising the CHOMTALAY restaurant all over Sam Roi Yod, and so thought it would be a good idea to visit for lunch.
The sign at the front of the restaurant advertised that all of the meals were MSG free, which we thought was fabulous given that most restaurants in Thailand use copious amounts of MSG in their food.
Upon entering the restaurant, we saw that it had won many awards, including a "Clean Toilet" award, but there were awards for having good and fresh food.
The menu looked to have many wonderful local dishes and so we asked the server if we could sit down. She was standing behind the 'greeter's area', we were standing right in front of it. There was an expectation that there was going to be an interaction between staff and customer. She looked away from us and did not answer. Given that there were no other people in the restaurant, we wondered if it might be closed. We waited for some time and she was still looking away from us. So I asked again, she finally looked at us and waived us into the restaurant. Completely disinterested.
We ordered our food and beer, and the food was delicious. It was fresh, it was tasty and authentic. It was a little on the pricey side.
The servers did not look at us once when serving, the serviettes were banged on to the table(almost thrown), the meals were placed down loudly and when we tried to engage staff with our rudimentary Thai (or very friendly English) we were completely, and I mean completely, ignored. The servers appeared to be so disinterested in serving us, and behaved like we were imposing on them. We are middle aged women and try to be very friendly to staff, knowing that the work they do can be difficult.
We were the only two people in the restaurant and between the times of serving us, the servers put their heads down on the tables and dozed.
The bill has a 10% service charge (imposed, no choice).
This really was the worst service I have received from wait staff in Thailand, they ignored us, were disinterested in serving us and were so removed from their work that it was remarkable.
So, the food is good, it is a bit pricey. They say they have no MSG. They have lots of awards. The toilets are very clean and they have won an award for it.
The service was the worst I have received not only in Thailand, but possibly anywhere in the world. If you dont want us in your restaurant, then dont put up all of those signs all over the area. I am astounded by the attitude of the staff.
The business card that we picked up at the restaurant states that the restaurant name is the "Chomtalay Restaurant" and it is located at 181 Moo 4, at the front of the Sam Roi Yod Holiday resort. So it is the same as the restaurant noted above.
