“Peaceful and atmospheric place close to Rethymnon”

Agia Irini Monastery at Kroussonas
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Agia Irini is one of the stops on the Rethymno City Tour open top bus. It is a restored nunnery with a community of resident nuns. An English speaking nun showed me around and told me about the icon of St Irini in the church which has allegedly helped many women wanting to have a child. There is a gift shop with very good quality merchandise made by the nuns. After showing me round the nun left me to sit quietly and rest and to take photos.
I found this place to be very spiritual and peaceful with lovely views across the hills and towards the coast.

If you travel to Crete go to the wonderful, nice and historical Agia Irini Monastery. I was there
in September 2011 with my wife. We went up there by taxi from Rethymno. The monastery is situated 5 kilomerers from Rethymno to the south. The name of the village is Kroussonas. The monastery has been estabilshed in the 10th century. As accurs with most of the monasteries in Crete, it has been destroyed several times during the various revolutions and revolts against the Ottoman domination. There is a very nice shop from which you can buy traditional handicrafts of weaving and needlework. The products are made by the 9 nuns who now are living in the monastery. The restorationn of the buildings started in 1970 and in 1989 the monastery was reoccupided ny the nuns. When you visit inhabited monasteries you must remember that your clothing should be appropriate, shoulders and knees must be covered. Go to this picturesque monastery, it is very beautiful situated high up in a mountain.
