At the end of our adventure with Luca from Kangaroo Island Hire-A-Guide, we stopped by the Hanson Bay Widlife Sanctuary. it really was the highlight of our trip. As you drive in to the part (especially later in the day), the kangaroos are everywhere. Just walking (hopping?) by you. After spending a few weeks in Australia, we figured we would finally see a few up close, but there really were dozens. We got some amazing pictures of us with kangaroos in the background that ended up on the cover of our photobook for the trip.
You can even see koalas sleeping up in the trees. We didn't get to see any at ground level, but they were close enough that we could see them and get pictures of them.
100% worth the visit.

We enjoyed this nice walk on a calm afternoon on the island.
We so many koalas, and also some kangaroos, the trees were beautiful and big.
There is a small shop where you can buy some food and tourist stuff.
Nice place anyway, very enjoyable.
The tour takes less than an hour and is the place where we saw more koalas except for Cape Otway, where it's even better since koalas are completely free.

My daughter and I happened to be the only ones taking the walk on this one particular evening, so we got a private tour. Because I was driving a rental car, I was very, very nervous about driving the 5 minutes back to the Wilderness Retreat lodge in the dark, so our guide was accomodating and kept the walk shorter for us. We saw a few koalas and possum. It was nice just being out in nature and hearing the kookaberras at night.

The highlight was at the end, when she took us to the kangaroo area. There was a friendly kangaroo who was a regular. Our guide introduced us, and the kangaroo was nice enough to let my daughter feel the joey inside her pouch, and even take a peek inside her pouch!

Recommended for nature and animal lovers.

Koalas pretty much guaranteed with staff placing flags at the base of trees where koalas are snoozing. The park is very neat & tidy and the pathways wide and clear of tree debris. Would recommend a visit if you have an hour or so to burn but would rate other areas above it if stretched for time.
