“Very modern resort. We were well taken care of.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 15, 2012

When we first booked this hotel it was about a year ago. Didn't know what to expect. When we got there, they upgraded us to a 2 bedroom villa on the beachfront. Normally this would have been a good thing, but at this hotel it was not for us. The villa was gorgeous inside, but we did not see the sweeping gorgeous views that were indicated on the internet photos. The view was of a marshy area in front of our deck with the beach beyond that. The restaurant was right next door so it wasn't private at all. So we asked to be moved to our originally requested room which was a 1 bedroom villa with a panoramic view. They were very gracious and wanted very much to please us and did offer to move us to another room. We were extremely pleased with the new room. The views were great. They added a lot of perks for the mistake and refunded some of our money for the first night. We were very pleased and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. Many of the resorts in the Seychelles have more rustic or colonial furnishings. Raffles is the exception with ultra modern facilities and just beautiful modern furnishings. We had our own plunge pool on our deck, a living room, kitchen, bath, outdoor and indoor shower. Everything was really nice. The restaurants is expensive. Try to get at least the inclusive breakfast if possible. The island has nice beaches, and the famous coco du mer. If you love golf, go to the Lumera Golf Course. Absolutely gorgeous. The beach there is equally beautiful. They have a nice spa there too if you don't golf. I went there while my husband golfed. It was very nice. Highly recommend this place. See my photos.

Room Tip: 1 bedroom panoramic villa

It was our honeymoon and this hotel has made the trip! We had a villa at the top of the hill with the beautiful panoramic view over the sea and Curiese island. The villa itself was amazing - everything is new and high quality. The most of the luxury hotels at Seychelles are crapy old and overexoensive. Here it was clear why it has its price. Modern design, new furniture and everything. All is organized very good: the system to control lightening in the villa from one platform, a huge TV with more than 20 channels, coffee maschine (!!), clock, yoga matt (!!) and so on. The luxorious tea (not that awfull tea dust in bags, but very good and tasty tea). TWO refrigerators: one in the villa as a mini bar and another at the terrace. It is very comfortable if you want to have your own wine/champagne / juce in the frige. The bath with a panoramic view was ideal for the honeymoon.
The view to the sea from the bed is amasing, especially for honeymoon.
The terrace has beach chair and very nice pool. It is too small to swim but with that kind of view you can just stay and enjoy the panorama.
The hotel has very nice small beach equipped with high-quality chaise longues and hammocks. There are some beatiful stones at the left and right side so it also nice for shooting. In december the sea was ideal: the smallest waves we have seen at the island, clean sand, perfect entrance to the sea, blue clear water.
There are also big pools near the beach.
The breakfast in the restaurant was perfect: freshly prepared omelette on your choice, belgium waffles and pancakes, freshly pressed juices, fruites and other usual stuff. Even champagne.
We have eat only in fish reastaurant, and we were very satisfied with the quality of the food.
Every eveing there are some activities: traditional creol singing and dancing, cocteil classes or thematical dinner.
The hotel is also very suitable for children.

The hotel itself is kind of separated, there is almost nothing in walking distance. To the neares town one have to use a car (although by car it is just about 7 minutes driving).

What I really like is that the stuff is willing to develope the hotel. There are some plans for the higher speed internet connections, more different languages for the TV, e.g. russian.

The good point is also the green stuff around: it was enough to make the place beautiful (although villas are not isolated completely from each other by plants), buts still prevent from a lot of insects in your room. We have not seen any insects in the villa in opposite to other even more expensive hotels, where there was a full representation of the jungle fauna.

The only negative moments I can remember is the water, that was not completely cold and hot. It was just slightly warm, that is not an issue after the sun, but can be a problem when you are sunburned and have a fear.
The stuff was very friendly, an sometimes even too much: you can get tires to answer everybody that you ar fine and everything is excellent 50 times per day. In my opinion it is also not good to actively take an interest about guests plans for the day. Guests are not children and stuff is not parents to give a report for all the plans they have. It make feel uncomfortable. You can put a paper with the all listed activites for the next day as in other hotels, but not ask the guest if they come or not. People are on the rest, they don't want to think about obligation and promising thay have gave to the stuff. And it also feels like pressure from the hotel to use their facilities. It is not fair.

But talking about the hotel - it is definetely the perfect place. The villa looks excatly like the villa of the dream. The view is exccelent, the beach is one of the most beautiful on the island, the food is excellent and the stuff is pure amicability. I can definetly recommend this place and I wish to come again.

Room Tip: Higher villas have better view, but can be reached only with buggies.

It is clear that the Raffles Praslin was intended to be a top end luxury resort demanding the high prices of a Four Seasons or Banyan Tree. However it seems that somebody missed the point that the highest prices can only be demanded if you offer the highest level of facilities and service. The Raffles Praslin has a high standard, but is not the very top standard.

Unfortunately, it will be difficult for them to fix the weaknesses in the basic infrastructure. We were in a Royal Oceanview villa, which in most resorts would be described as "partial ocean view", with most of the view being the villa in front and the imposing arrivals lobby. Although the windows have mirrored glass, if the villa lights are on everybody arriving at the hotel and passing along the road in front of the villa can see right in. (Perhaps this is what is meant by "bathtub with a view" :-)). The villas are just too densely packed in, for this to ever be a top resort, even when the vegetation has matured in a few years time. The hosepipes strung across the boulders can never substitute for a proper water feature or natural stream.

The build quality is good but not top. Instead of hardwoods, there is a lot of laminate and stained plywood. The floor of the outdoor shower has the wrong gradient, so when it rains (or showers), the bathroom floods, as the drain is too slow. The extractor fans are noisy and routed directly above the bed, and can not be turned off by the guests -- but praise for the technician who came at 11pm to pull the circuit breaker so that we could sleep. The minibar fridge is in the bedroom rather than the kitchen/salon area, and is also too loud. The plunge pool is, unnecessarily, just a little too small. When you sit on the guest toilet, your knees bang against the washbasin. The bath taps cannot be reached when sitting in the bath. All small items in themselves, but showing a lack of attention to the design that just does not live up to the high standard set by the flagship hotel in Singapore.

The service was also good, but not top. Pre-arrival, a manager had researched our names online by visiting our LinkedIn profiles, and it was obvious that our guest profiles had been circulated throughout the resort. We were met on arrival by two managers speaking our native German (a nice touch) and we were introduced to our two butlers, who efficiently checked us in and swiped our credit card, but who we never saw again the whole stay until one of them came to present the bill! A more senior butler, who was very efficient in getting problems fixed, looked after us most of the time. A promised daily fruit basket did not materialize until we asked him to fix it (and then we received a super-sized basket!). Nespresso capsules were not replenished until we asked him to fix it. Room service items were not cleared until we asked him. The minibar was used on the first night, but not restocked until after we had left four days later, (and even though I advised the discrepancy at check out, it resulted in a small post departure charge, that most top hotels would have waived). This was definitely not a “personal”, but more of a “virtual” butler service.

Outside the room, we also felt that the resort was understaffed. There was no towel or refreshment service on the otherwise excellent beach. The pool staff was overworked, leading to long service times, and incorrect orders. The General Manager was visiting the restaurant on the first evening. Rather then the usual brief welcome, he was spending 10-15 minutes at each table regaling guests with his personal and the hotel background, which we personally felt was too long, especially with our freshly-cooked lobster going cold in front of us.

The staff was also very efficient in organizing trips to La Digue and Curieuse Islands. The bicycles they reserved for us on La Digue were however the oldest, most decrepit devices I have seen – and required the chain to be repaired when we were at the farthest point from the harbor. The weather prevented us crossing to Curieuse from the hotel beach, as the waves were too high – but even with the roller-coaster small boat ride across to the island, it was well worth the visit.

Overall, the hotel just felt too clinical. Modern, clean and designed to impress, with the management team doing their utmost, but foe me it was overall just one level off the top rank.

This was our first time in the Seychelles and I had been indecisive on where to stay. So happy to have chosen Raffles Praslin. All the staff were genuinely friendly and helpful. Villas were fantastic and beaches were stunning.

We were concerned about having butler service as like most people we are used to doing things for ourselves and are happy to do so. However our butler Kavi soon put our minds at rest and we enjoyed his cheerful nature and made use of his knowledge. Lovely guy.

Our housekeeper Denish really went out of his way to make us smile - decorating our room beautifully with the flora of Praslin. Miss him

All of the staff went the extra mile to be helpful and accomodating and all were interesting to talk to- there are many different nationalities working at Raffles. I cannot mention them all but I will always remember them.

The restaurants were exquisite. Breakfast at the Losean was varied and delicious - you must try the Takamaka honey. Also each morning at breakfast we would recieve a newspaper with a summary of the latest British news. The daily quiz in these papers were fun. The service was outstanding at both the Losean and Curieuse Restaurants. We were encouraged to Choose ANYTHING we wanted for our evening meal which chef would happliy prepare. As it was we were content with the set menu but having such an option was luxurious.

Our guide Bernard was great company, knowledgeable and funny. Our favourite trips were to La Dique - just stunning and Aride Island - once in a lifetime experience even if your not much of an Ornithologist like me. After a day at La Dique we were exhuasted so we ordered room service again this was an outstanding meal with exceptional service.

Praslin and Raffles are exactly how you see them in glossy brochures. You will not be disappointed.

Last but not least special mention must go to Sidney who manages the Losean Restaurant admirably well. Thanks to him for his charismatic wit and charming company. This guy should have his own travel TV show it would be a hit!!!!!

Like all raffles in the world this hotel is amazing!
the villas are excellent, the grrens around the hotel are well set, jut need them to grow a little more to cover the rooms so you can get more privacy.
all rooms are very well equiped, very spacious.
the breakfast is excellent, and the spa is great!
the only inconvenient is that the resort is set on a hill, so you cannot walk from your room to the beach or to the restaurant, you always need a buggy.
the service is excellent, and very friendly

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2011

We travelled to the Seychelles for the Eid break and arrived at the Raffles resort on Praslin Island on the 4 November. The island is very quiet but beautiful and we were looking forward to our stay in such picaresque surroundings. We were met at the reception area by a hotel representative who welcomed us to the resort and talked us through the hotel amenities. During the conversation my wife brought up the subject of the two shark attacks that had happened during the year at which point I asked the representative if the hotel had put up nets on the hotels beach which she advised they didn't have any. We were advised that if we wanted an area which had nets up we would need to visit the public beach which was ten minutes down the road by car. I was rather surprised by this as the Seychelles is a beach holiday destination where people would tend to spend a lot of time on the beach so why the hotel had not put up nets post the shark attacks seem bewildering and the longer the conversation went on the more unconformable the hotel representative became.

We were then introduced to our personal butler who drove us up to our villa by golf cart. Due to the size and layout of the resort most travel has to be done by golf cart especially as a lot of the roads leading to and from the villa's are quite steep. The villa we chose was an Oceanview Villa and this by all accounts was well laid out and comfortable. We had advised the hotel that we were had a 14 month old child with us and they had put a baby cot in the room which was very good quality and included several gift items such as a cap, water bottle and a little rucksack which we thought was a nice touch. The butler gave us a further brief and advised that we would receive a complimentary bottle of champagne and a fruit basket which again thought was a good touch. The butler requested for our passports for the hotels administration and promised to return these once this was done. Unfortunately this is when we first noticed the poor levels of service. After two hours another butler turned up with the passports but out of the three we originally gave them he returned with only two. We asked where the third was and the butler said he would check with the reception and bring it back. After another 45 minutes he returned with the third passport and apologised. We then asked when the complimentary champagne and fruit would arrive and he advised this would be delivered with dinner. In the evening we looked at the in room dining menu which we didn’t think had a great selection and placed an order with room service where we were notified would take 45 minutes to deliver. The food that arrived was average at best and luke warm. When I asked the butler where the one desert we had ordered was he said this would be delivered separately and asked me when I would like it for which I told him 15 minutes. I’ve never seen a hotel that delivers deserts separately but after 45 minutes I was forced to call room service and enquire where it was. The complimentary champagne and fruit never arrived with the evening meal as promised.

The next day we awoke and went to make coffee in the room. The room comes with an espresso machine but no instant coffee for those who don’t like espresso but the room had a box of 9 different types of tea. The only problem was that when we opened the box it was totally empty which was surprising. We then went down for breakfast which is held in one of the two hotel restaurants. The food on offer is good quality but based on previous stays at five star hotels I would have to say the selection available was average. For instance, when we went to look for yoghurts’ for our son the hotel only had plain which was quite salty or fat free and no flavoured ones. The breakfast area has an egg station and another annoyance with the service was that that the you had to keep reminding the chef at the station for your order as they seemed overwhelmed with the number of requests they received.

In the afternoon we visited the pool area of the hotel which was really good and then returned to the villa and wanted to make coffee. To our surprise and even though the room had been made up the espresso for the machine had not been refilled and the box that contained the tea’s was still empty. When we called room service to send replenishments to the villa they instead sent a pot of coffee and we had to explain to the individual that delivered it what we were looking wanted. He then disappeared and eventually returned with tea and coffee replacements.

In the evening we decided to try one of the hotels restaurants (the same one where they hold breakfast in the mornings). The room has subdued lighting in the evening and as soon as we entered we felt uncomfortable as it seemed the mood was a romantic dinner setting. Add a 14 month old boy with a salt and pepper shaker and love goes out the window. We again felt the menu was very limited and the food portions that arrived were on the small side. I’m quite a big guy but when my wife who is half my size says the portion is small then it gives you a fair idea.

For the rest of the stay we confined ourselves to having dinner in the room and the delivery times ranged from 45 minutes to 75 minutes and the food was always only ever mildly warm.

On the second day of the trip we did take an excursion over to the island across from Praslin to see the giant turtles which was a wonderful experience.
The last day prior to leaving at the resort appeared to sum up the poor service. We went down to breakfast as normal and the plates from the previous evening were sitting on the table outside the villa. When we arrived at breakfast we were seated and offered coffee. The server for some reason only brought one cup for my wife and no coffee. After 15 minutes we had to ask for another cup and where the coffee was. We had to again remind the guy at the egg station about our order for scrambled eggs and a further notable point was that things such as bread, butter and plates had run out on the buffet but instead of being proactive the staff on duty had to be requested to replace these items. We bumped into a couple we had met during the trip at breakfast and while talking to them they commented that the service during their stay had not been up to much. They also asked if we had ever heard of a hotel that had run out of orange juice as apparently the Raffles had.

On returning to the villa the room had been made up and the plates and serving dishes from the previous night’s dinner had been moved to the hallway outside the villa. We then went down to the hotels beach for a while and it was quite noticeable how few people were in the sea and those that were stayed very close to the beach. We did try and go in the sea but after several minutes you just felt very conscious of what had happened with the sharks and wanted to get out. We then headed over to the pool and ordered drinks and a bowl of fries. As we had become accustomed to the drinks arrived but the fries never did. When we were leaving the pool area they brought the bill which included the fries so it wasn’t like they hadn’t heard me.

On returning back to the villa around 6pm the plates and serving dishes were still in the villa hallway but by now were covered by ants. The driver of the buggy noticed these and I could tell by how quickly he got on his mobile without saying a word to him how embarrassed he was by this.

A further point that other guests had mentioned was the length of time it required to get a buggy to come and pick them up. On discussing this with the one of the drivers it was interesting to find out that out of the ten buggies the hotel had for guest pickups five were out of service due to maintenance issues. This seemed odd as we had been told that the hotel had only been open since April so to have five out with maintenance problems in the space of eight months was concerning.

Overall the Seychelles is both a beautiful and peaceful destination. The Raffles resort is clean and the villas are well laid out and decorated. Unfortunately for us this was diminished by constant service headaches which for the amount of money you pay to stay at a resort like this should never be an issue but we found for the four nights we stayed it generally was one of the main focal points of discussion. The staff at the hotel and are very welcoming and friendly but unfortunately this should only make up part of the service and not the total service. Prior to booking with the hotel we did check tripadvisor for other guest’s feedback and due to the positive feedback we went ahead and booked with Raffles. My feeling is that those guests that had a positive stay with Raffles may have stayed at the resort when it was not at full capacity but when it is the service level drops significantly.

We had wanted to go to the Seychelles for a few years and when i saw that Raffles had opened a resort on Praslin Island we decided to go.The whole experience is truly amazing. On arrival we were upgraded to an ocean view suite with amazing views of Curieuse Island. The villa had absolutely everything that we needed, nothing had been overlooked, even the hairdrier was salon standard. On our outside deck we even had a barbecue. The staff are exceptional and made our stay even more special, nothing was too much trouble. We hired a speed boat for the day and what an amazing day we had, watching sea turtles swimming was a sight i will never forget. The food was simply superb we had chosen the half board option back home which allowed us to have anything off the menu in either restaurant.Breakfast with Sydney in the Losean restaurant was always a meal we enjoyed and dinner with Thomas in the Curieuse restaurant, we were literally spoilt for choice, Dennis is a talented chef. We met all the staff throughout our stay, we were there fourteen nighst, we even met the head of the Raffles empire who was visiting for a couple of days, he has the same name as my husband!! Our butlers were available whenever we needed them and Ashock our villa boy kept everything ship shape and so very clean all the time.I have stayed in the worlds best hotels and this has to be up there with them, this is a new resort and i reckon in a few more months you will struggle to get a room.
