As others have stated, the location is excellent, close to the center but still very quiet, and practically on the beach. All common areas are very well laid out and very pleasant. We stayed in a "flat" which had a very simple minimal kitchen (two burner stove, no oven, but with a microwave and a good-sized fridge), two nice bedrooms with their own bathrooms, and a small but sufficient living/dining area. The upstairs bedroom has a veranda and a view and is definitely the better of the two.
The staff and owners are extremely friendly and helpful, and will not rest until whatever you have asked for or even just asked about has been provided. The new pool area is very pleasant, with a pool long enough for laps, and lots of shade on the side.
Breakfast has lots of offerings; the lunch and dinner menu is fairly limited but reasonable; there are other restaurants in town, but since we were traveling with an elderly person we found it easier to eat at the pousada or in our room.
This is NOT a Caribean style beach. It is wide and windblown, and extends for miles. It has a stark beauty, and is good for running at low tide. At high tide it can get rough.
Gostoso is a hot windsurfing/kitesurfing point. We rented equipment and took lessons from the Dr. Wind Center, about a 25 minute walk along the beach from So Alegria. The instructor, Eugenio, was truly wonderful, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and very helpful. The equipment was good quality, well maintained and the rates were reasonable.
We drove to the beach at Tourinhos in the late afternoon; it's well worth the bumpy half hour drive to an even more remote and stark area, with some very interesting cliffs and a great sunset view.
