We stayed for one night on our cycling holiday (not the normal way folk get to Tebay services on the M6!). The hotel design is very attractive. Our room, and its large bed were very comfortable, and the attached bathroom (with bath) was of a very attractive design: all very clean and comfortable.

The restaurant's kitchen is excellent! A fine menu made it difficult to choose. The wine list was surprisingly eclectic.

So far everything we've experienced called for an excellent rating. The big let-down was the serving staff in the restaurant: it is not obvious they had been trained to be observant; non of the staff made an effort to look around the dinging area to see if anyone needed service! After having the menu for best part of half-an-hour, and my making several attempts to "catch-the-eye" of one of the four staff, I was forced to call-out loudly whilst waving the menu card. What made matters worse was the waitress commented that they "were very busy": busy - with only one third of the tables occupied!

The hotel must improve restaurant staff training: it is surely a most basic requirement to have staff look around for folk requiring service, if for no other reason than to prevent the customer the embarrassment of having to loudly gesture to get attention....

We needed a hotel to stop at for the night between Wales and Scotland on a driving tour of the UK. We chose this place for the location and price and were pleasantly surprised at how nice this place was. It is not just some roadside hotel. The rooms were so clean, beds were comfortable, and the staff was professional and friendly. Our daughter really loved the bunk bed in the family room we booked. We all loved the roaring fire in one of the reception rooms. There was also plenty of room in the car park to leave our car, something we came to appreciate on this trip.

We had room service for dinner, and everything tasted good. Breakfast in the morning was also very good, and we had a lovely view of a pond outside the restaurant window. This hotel really exceeded my expectations as far as food was concerned.

Two special touches I really appreciated were the information book in the room and the onsite farm store. The information book had all kinds of information about local things to do and about the hotel itself. I had no idea there was so much to do in the area and quickly found myself wishing we could have stayed instead of having to get on the road. The farm store was well-stocked and had an excellent selection. If you stay here you must visit it.

Bottom line: this is no typical roadside motel. If you need a place to stay on the road, this will suit your needs, but consider staying longer to see what the local area has to offer. Even if you are not staying the night, stop to check out the farm store.

We have stayed at the Westmorland on many occasions, certainly, at least 20 times. We find it the perfect one night break, as we live locally. Most guests are travelling to Scotland or south to London etc. For breaking a long journey or a short break, this hotel is ideal. Reception staff are friendly and prompt. The Restaurant is excellent, with well prepared food and attentive service. The menu is changed from time to time and always features local produce. Rooms are certainly of a 4 star standard. Only real issue is that it can get a rather cool in the public areas, if seated away from the fire. Outside, the duck pond is a nice feature, especially at breakfast time! Parking is generous
short walks are possible, ideally for dog owners. This is a dog friendly hotel.

Room Tip: There is a lift for some rooms only, so best to check, if mobility is an issue.

Fourth visit to this hotel and never been disappointed. The location is excellent with countryside all around you. Very relaxing atmosphere and very friendly and attentive staff. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable with free wi-Fi. The meals are designed around local produce and we thoroughly enjoyed the good choice available on the menu. The bar is snug and comfy with a real fire. This hotel is a wonderful alternative to the usual motorway stop-overs. The nearby service station has first rate facilities.

Room Tip: Always phone and confirm room type as sometimes on line descriptions can differ from the room itself
