Cleburne Homestead

Firstly let me say that David and Penelope are two of the most welcoming hosts that can be hoped for. We recently stayed 2 nights with our 2 children 9 & 12 and as the property is set in beautiful grounds with alpacas and geese, chooks and of course Mitilda the dog so the kids were always occupied. We stayed in the cottage and it was delightful with some great pieces of art (Penelope is an artist). Continental breakfasts were delicious and varied each day. If you are very light sleeper the roads are close so the noise might bother you a little but take ear plugs if you are a light sleeper as it is definetly worth staying here. You will need a car but it is not far to Hobart central and is far enough away to enjoy the rural outlook. A must stay location, thanks again for a great couple of days and hope we can return soon.

My wife and I stayed here for two days. It is simply a beautiful island of creativity and history rolled into one. We stayed in two rooms and both were delightful.

We loved the Alpacas, ducks, hares, rabbits, friendly geese and the two Puli Dogs that were always up for a pat. The accommodation was spot on - rustic and contemporary all in one.

The Breakfasts were to die for - Penelope's Poached Pears were the best we have ever eaten. And the art collection throughout the buildings wouldn't look out of place on the walls of many regional galleries.

Penelope and David are fabulous hosts. They were more than willing to drop people at attractions such as MONA which was a great advantage when considering the location of Cleburne.

Put together good intelligent conversation from the two creative hosts - a picture postcard perfect view in most directions, great food and quite well set up heritage accommodation and we will be back!

Room Tip: With kids stay in the Detached cottage unless you don't like or cant handle stairs. The wood fir...

Beautifully restored stables, old farm feeling with animals and old homestead, great breakfast BUT.........since it was saved from demolition for a freeway the roadway literally surrounds it and the traffic is relentless all day all night, trucks, hoons in utes, etc. Spoiled the weekend, but not a lot they can do about it. No shops, no transport or even half decent bottleshop. Won't stay or recommend to friends.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

We were very lucky to snare a last minute room at Cleburne...the hosts were delightful, the breakfast immense, fresh, local & utterly memorable.
The amazing, lovingly restored old stables (that we were in, there are other restored buildings with a range of accommodations) are cosy, soundproof & afford a solid sleep.
Leave time for a leisurely breakfast on the massive table in front of the open fire - it will set you up for the day!
You need a car to be staying here, but it is close to MONA (DO NOT miss MONA), & still just minutes to Hobart, so who cares?

What a wonderful quaint homestead representing the true style of old-fashioned charm and elegance. We are so impressed with the homestead in every way from the impressive buildings; the amazing Alpaca's to the simple yet lovely geese. Their breakfasts were fabulous and their service was superb. Penelope and David are just terrific and delightful people and nothing was too much trouble.

We were a family of eight (four adults and four children) and we were easily accommodated. My mother uses a walker and wheelchair and Cleburne accommodated us without any troubles. They are environmentally friendly which was really impressive.

We fully recommend Cleburne and would love to go back again one day. Thank you to both Penelope and David for a wonderful time.

We stayed here at the end of May and what a lovely place. Don't let the location put you off. Despite being surrounded by major roads you can't hear a thing once inside those thick stone walls. We had a little 2 storey cottage and everything was wonderful. David had the fire all ready to go when we arrived, and with loads of good quality wood we were toasty warm all night. Breakfasts were fabulous and generous, with warm poached fruit every morning, YUM!! Good location if you want to go to MONA, but not really within walking distance of anything much. Had a wonderful stay.

Had a great weekend here with amazing hosts David and Penelope. Loved the contrast of the cosy stone walled rooms and vegetable garden with the cutting edge art collection. Great contrasting spaces to hang out in within the homestead and gardens
