Owner description: The Purangi Winery was established in 1986 the 37th winery in New Zealand on land cleared from second growth scrub in 1972 by the Ecans Family who moved from Hong Kong and who were welcome settlers by the district in 1966 after buying land from the Harsant and Wigmore Families and then owning and operating the Hahei Store. The land now 60 acres was farmed running cows, pigs, sheep and goats then planted supplying the Auction Markets with table grapes, kiwifruit, passionfruit, garlic and fresh produce from the market garden. Later crayfishing down the Purangi River and then a commercial river cruise got started after the winery was established. In 1987/8 we opened awine bar cafe "The Buttery". In 1993 tea planting was undertaken with the establishment of the Tea Research Institute of NZ. When land was cleared originally organic principles were adopted and over the years many "Wooferd" and "HelpXers" have volunteered their help so that our products are made in the tranditional manner with the purest ingredients hence the company name PURANGI ESTATE LTD or "Purest". The Winecellar in St. Kevins Arcades, K'Road, Auckland was started in 2004 and is now a popular city bar and music venue. In 2009 we built a wood fired pizza oven and launched the PURANGI WINERY PIZZERIA which has been very popular - we produce many of the ingredients for our pizzas, making the basil pesto and pizza sauce and using a wide range of fresh herbs and vegetables from the garden.

This place ticks all the boxes. Easy to find, its got an instant rustic appeal. The invitation to "come into the bar and taste some wine" was an understatement. Danny is a fabulous host, with some very interesting little facts and also very generous glasses of wine and liquer to sample. We were so "happy" by the end of it we headed next door for a lovely home made pizza which we ate amongst the vines by candle light in the picturesque setting. This place is a true hidden gem and we'll be definitely visiting next time and recommend anybody who has the chance pops in to see for themselves.

Got it recommended for the really good woodfired pizza on which you can choose youre own toppings, I went there and I stayed. The atmosphere is absolutley amazing. You can sit outside under kiwi vines or inside where candles in bottles on an old piano put you in the right mood. And if you decide to have a taste of all the things they brew. Oh. my! Feijoa liquor with soda is my favorite, followed by the feijoa and apple cider, the plum schnapps, the manuka vinegar, the real feijoa fruit and the fejioa gin. Or maybe the wines or port or any of the other spirits they brew on the premise? Danny is very welcoming, informative and an excellent host. I had an outstanding time. Thank you!

Based on a great recommendation from the Whitianga i-Site personnel I made a point to stop at Purangi Winery late in the day. One of the most entertaining stops on my trip. Danny was great. Fun to talk to and the type of person that makes you feel welcome no matter where you are from. Even though I got there long after the tasting room was closed he opened it up for me and was nice enough to pour a few tastes in between running back to the restaurant to cook. Unique wines and liqueurs - really enjoyed them and Danny's commentary. Oh, and besides the wine I can honestly say they make some of the best wood fired pizza I have ever had. Sitting under a kiwi tree talking to Danny while he worked his magic at the brick oven billowing smoke - fantastic.

During our stay in the Cormandal region, we randomly came across this hidden gem. The experience was so informative and entertaining that it will be a highlight from our adventure in NZ. Danny the proprietor is very welcoming as a host and adds significantly to this experience.The pizzas are also worthwhile!

It's so nice and chilled out! So good to feel comfortable and welcome and taste some magical localy made wine! We had a Ball!
