I really enjoyed looking at the variety of oil, acrylic and ink paintings in a relaxed family home setting. The Artist in residence was very interesting to talk to and I admired her work. Some paintings are on a large scale and would make great gifts. It is great to see such a gallery in Whitehead.

It’s brilliant, and its FREE! It was a wonderful surprise to discover this place. Whitehead is full of artists, but this is its only art gallery. Cynthia Waddell has turned her very handsome house into a really beautiful visitor attraction. There are pictures so wonderfully big and colourful that you can see some from the street outside, through the bay windows.

The fun starts outside, actually. The bin lids are painted gold. And why not!

Having a guided tour round an art show is always more fun, but here the owner is herself the artist. She was very happy to entertain questions at any level. A kid thought an astronaut in one picture was a skeleton. Some reminded me of early Picasso. Great big paintings, very boldly coloured, stylized figures in firey landscapes, orange birds on deep blue skies. Double Moons – ask her about those.

There were also some very different pictures of birds, by another artist. Very beautiful, detailed, like illustrations, but with character.

Something I’d never seen before were scraperboard works. She told me you scratch away the black surface to cut the white lines into it. Very fine work, with lines cut finer than a millimeter apart. One was sold already.

The rooms themselves are very interesting. I like odd things like candles mounted on the wall with mirrors behind them. There are big old-style indoor clothes drying rails along the ceiling that I’d never have spotted, except that another visitor pointed them out. There are cat bowls decorated with skeleton designs. There’s also the cat, a creature with glorious red and blue eyes. There are huge candles in glass jars that seem to have burned all the way down, eating out fantastical shapes as they went.

There are always ample parking spaces outside, all the way up and down Cable Road. Most visitors to Whitehead like to stroll along the Promenade, so you can park at the Blackhead car park instead. New black and gold signs will point your way there. When you get near the end of the Promenade just cross the footbridge to reach Cable Road. Two doors past The Gallery is the Old Tea House if you’re thirsty, or have earned a dessert.

I’d highly recommend this as a free fun place to pop into when you’re in the town. Everyone from kids upwards found something with the “wow” factor to appreciate. The owner gives you space to look quietly if you want, and couldn’t be more friendly to visitors with questions. The Gallery is open 2pm to 5pm Saturdays and Sundays.
