Recommended length of visit: 1-2 hours
Owner description: The original providers of Happy Clammers, Gilbert and Goldie Gillis have decided to retire but Gilbert's brother John and his wife Jackie have stepped in to take their place continuing to provide their unique clam digging experience in front of their house on the beautiful Pinette River. You'll dig your own soft-shelled and hard shelled clams (quahogs). After digging, you'll go back up to their house overlooking the river where Jackie will steam and grill the clams for you to enjoy. You're welcome to bring additional food with you...bread, cheese, wine, beer to make a full meal. The experience takes place half an hour east of Charlottetown and is offered daily Monday-Friday subject to John & Jackie's availability. All equipment needed is provided. We have some rubber boots you can use but we suggest everyone come with footwear that won't be damaged if it gets wet.

My husband and I had a great time with Gilbert and Goldie. We were the first clammers of the season and thoroughly enjoyed everything about this experience. Of course best of all was in the eating. Goldie prepared our clams beautifully, nothing beats eating produce as fresh as this and we collected them all ourselves with help from Gilbert of course. I thoroughly recommend this trip, you definately won't be disappointed. Thank you Gilbert and Goldie for making us feel so at ease in your beautiful home.

Having read the reviews we were all looking forward to the activity. It's hard to convey in words the feelings we had as we left!

It was an adventure like non other, an opportunity to learn more about nature, to have some wonderful food that we all helped catch and to dine with two amazing people.

Take this trip and you won't be disappointed!

My family and I had a great time with Gilbert and Goldie during the Happy Clammers experience. Both Gilbert and Goldie were hospitable, knowledgeable, and very friendly. This was a great family experience which would be great for couples as well.

Our experience started at the Gillis’ beautiful house where we loaded up Gilbert’s truck with the clamming equipment. Goldie watched over us and tempted us with promises of chowder, steamed clams, and fresh biscuits. Once we hit the beach, we unloaded all the equipment and set forth to find the littleneck clams which would soon be our tasty supper. Under Gilbert’s watchful eye, we got lessons on what to look for and how to use the special clamming tools to dig up the clams. We each got a chance to use the specialized equipment and took turns digging up the mud to uncover the juicy clams. Even our 11 month daughter had a blast with the little plastic shovel and bucket Goldie provided.

Once we had a tray full of clams we headed back to Gillis’ homestead where we cleaned the clams and went inside for a brief biology lesson and other interesting clam tidbits from Goldie. After the lesson Goldie served us piping hot bowls of chowder along with warm biscuits. Following the appetizer, we dug into the clams we just picked. They were steamed to perfection and were accompanied with a tutorial on how to properly eat them, and a bowl of hot butter. We ended off the dinner with fresh homemade rhubarb pie, vanilla ice cream, and hot coffee.

We really had a blast and would love to do the experience again.

PS: Don’t wear white shoes to the beach unless you want them to turn pink!

Our family enjoyed an afternoon with the Happy Clammers! It was great fun, we learned the skills to dig clams and enjoyed the clams afterwards. Plus, we did an across Canada trip and after being on the road and dining out for meals it was so good to have a home cooked meal and dessert!

An exquisite experience, as unique as the island itself. After reading many of the rave reviews, and noticing that Happy Clammers was ranked the number one activity on the island, we were very excited that we were able make a reservation during our short visit to PEI, and liked Goldie/ Gilbert Gillis, the owners immediately with their prompt booking response, value for the price for sure. Would recommend it for families too! After a quick greeting, we headed down to the mud flats, and Gilbert was an excellent guide and teacher on the process of finding clams, the area, and anything nautical, you are in great hands and feel that not only have you enjoyed a great one-of-a-kind experience, but learned from the best the island has to offer. After our small group gathered about 20 pounds of clams, we headed back to the house to wash up (pampered with even a warm water hose) and while Gilbert steamed the clams, Goldie took over with a quick lesson on the clams of the island, and then it was time to sit down to a feast, family-style. With plenty of steamers, chowder, homemade bisquits, remember to save room for her desserts, we enjoyed homemade blackberry pie!? Gilbert even gave our girls some small sea items and book to bring to show-and-tell at school. The kids, and kids-at heart loved the adventure, and would HIGHLY recommend for anyone coming to the island. Thank you Gilbert and Goldie for an experience of a lifetime.

P.S. It's worth checking out the Prim point lighthouse at the end of their road.
