We did not do the tour but wandered the gardens and grounds. It was beautiful. It looks like they will be lighting for Christmas soon- the photo's were stunning! Next visit we'll have the formal tour and stay until night to see the lights in person.

“Not a typical Dutch tour guide?”
Reviewed October 1, 2013

Visited Kasteel de Haar yesterday (Sun Sep 29, noon), a nice castle with lovely grounds and gardens, built by a minor Dutch nobility some 120 years ago using money from his rich wife (a daughter of the Rothschild family) for the entertaining of, as it later turned out, movie stars mostly. The guided tour, 12 euro, started out pleasant enough, all in Dutch (which I has none – not an issue in any way), but I was astounded when the tour guide, upon learning that I was from Sydney, Australia, exclaimed, verbatim, “but you don’t have blue eyes and blond hair”.

Hmmm. I was forced to give her a quick and gentle lesson that life really had moved on, and that human history is full of ups and downs, blink of an eye really. Thousands of years ago our own forebears built serious forts and castles (rather than a plaything like the De Haar) on their way to conquer the world while Western Europe, the Netherlands included, mired in extreme poverty and cultural ignorance, suffering a series of dark ages before and after its submission to the Romans. And that I myself do teach quite a few “blue eye and blond hair” (good heavens, I dislike using such words in this context but have to repeat them here to make a point) souls learn a thing or two in life.

I feel sorry for the prejudices and ignorance of the tour guide, a woman of some advanced age (I myself am nearly 60). Rather sad, considering the Dutch have been doing a fine job in some respect for the betterment of the world.

I can only hope that after today the woman improves herself a little for her job, and less absorbed in her own self-importance.

Tch tch.

“Just the extensive ground around the castle is already worth the visit!”
Reviewed September 29, 2013 via mobile

Found this castle by a simple google search on a sunny Sunday looking for an outdoor activity near a landmark. Was not dissapointed, the park surrounding the castle is beautiful and dog-friendly! So even the castle may not be rich in history, the sight of it and its expansive surrounding more than compensates that! Ok we were lucky to be there on a sunny day too.

“Meh. Maybe for Dutch speakers”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

This is basically a mansion tour. The story is of a rich family that built a really nice home, made it look a little like a medieval castle, and then used it to host famous actors and other celebrities once a year. This is more a show of opulence and possibly decadence, than anything else.

The Kasteel tour is given only in Dutch, when we went there was not even an audio tour in English, we were give a transcript of the guide's explanation. The tour goes on and on for over an hour with silly details, such as how Roger Moore lifted a turkey, or how Elizabeth Taylor did something or how the Baron's kids behaved at dinner.

In summary - this "kasteel" seems not to have any real historical or architectural interest or value. It is not even that well kept - the plaster is peeling in various locations, as the tour guide even pointed out to visitors.

This is a country teeming with real historical castles - visit any one of those.
