“Good Value”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

My family of 4 stayed in a room with 2 double beds for 3 nights. Simple room with firm beds, everything was clean, good A/C. Hot water was a little spotty, took a long time to warm up and was hotter at some times than others, but adequate. Nice towels. Free wi-fi. Easy walk from the ADO bus station as are all the La Canada hotels, Huachenango Feliz restaurant is next door and very popular with the hispanics. We ate breakfast once at the hotel and it was good, plato de frutas, huevos rancheros, muelletes, and pan toastado. Excellent fresh squeezed OJ. We also enjoyed our food a the nearby Jade Cafe, and frappicinos at the Cafe across the corner from the hotel. My kids favorite food was the bistec con queso, and pastor tacos at Tropi Tacos on the main street in town towards the main square.

Room Tip: Main building towards the back for the quietest rooms.

I wanted a decent mid-range hotel in Palenque and ended up staying there twice, when driving from Merida to San Cristóbal. During our first stay we were in the annex and later we got a room in the main building.
The rooms in the Annex are simpler, a bit smaller and we had the hotels water pumps just outside our room (#8), so when the motor clicked in that woke us up a couple of times. The WiFi was also variable in strength. On the plus side, the room was very clean, they have a hair dryer, a safe and you can park very close to your room.
We noticed an improvement in our room in the main building. Everything looked newer and the bathroom fittings were better quality. However, I did have 2 grumbles. First the bathroom sash window was a complete botch job and couldn't actually close! So if you’re there in a cold spell, you’ll have problems. In addition, the curtain was half hanging off and one wonders why a maid/maintenance person couldn't rehang it.
On the whole, the best thing about this hotel is its location. It’s away from the somewhat noisy downtown but at the same time only 10 minutes walk away. The Cañada neighbourhood is very pleasant, with lots of trees and you are very close to the road out to all the attractions.
Palenque has limited mid-range hotels and prices are a little above the norm, but overall Xibalba represents a pretty decent option if you want to stay near the town rather than in the archaeological zone.

The room was spotless. Everything worked fine: A/C, fan, screeens, in-bathroom-safe. Room at back of main building was very quiet for sleeping. Minimal English spoken, but all staff were very cordial and friendly. A pot of coffee is on from 5:00am for those with an early departure of a tour to Yaxchilan. Restaurant hours undefind. Seemed to be closed in the evening. Very good breakfast. Can't beat it for the price. Would stay again without a doubt.

We are on a budget so we were looking for a decent place to stay for a reasonable price. We really enjoyed Hotel Xibalba. Apparently Xibalba is the Mayan word for hell so we stayed in "hotel hell." The staff was very nice, the rooms were clean and comfortable. We didn't have any problems with noise like a couple of the other reviewers, but our man purpose here was to tour ruins so we were up early every day anyway.
This place is close to restaurants, the bus station, and it is easy to catch a taxi or collectivo nearby for a short ride to the Palenque ruins. This is also a good place to catch a tour to Banampak and Yaxchilan.
Another plus was the nice towels that they change everyday (some budget hotels have very cheap towels and try not to change them very often). The photos on the site don't really do this place justice.

Room Tip: We had room number 12 on the ground floor near the front and it was perfect for what we needed.

Xibalba

Nothing special nothing bad except for the constant barely tolerable hum coming from some piece of equipment in the yard below - a tall cylinder, a pump maybe. I was in room 2 in the annex nearest the main hotel across the corridor from the source of the hum; room 5 is right beside it. i do 't advise it! try for room 1 furthest away. I don't know about the other annexes. The main hotel hums too.

Other gripes: no bedside table. No pressure in shower. i didn't wash my hair because I wouldn't have been able to wash the shampoo out.
Wifi works in the hall but not in the room.

Plusses: air conditioning that works and a fan.
Clean, newly built and painted smallish but airy room, view of jungle trees from window.
Lots of cafes and other places to stay in a little street which has the feeling of being in the jungle, even though it is between two parts of the town. Lots of life and other travellers, which is nice sometimes.
Ado bus station walking distance ( without luggage )and you might as well walk there to book your ticket because doing it on line is a nightmare.
have breakfast in Yakskin cafe down the road. I sat there for 4 hours planning the next part of my trip and the waiter even helped, looking up telephone numbers and trying to find a way through the ADO website. ( he couldn't) it has a hostel and has some individual rooms. I might stay there when I return.

The people in reception are pleasant , but not overly helpful.

To sum up Xibalba isn't bad, but I wouldn't recommend it especially. . By the way I clicked spa and fitness centre by accident in the ratings - it doesn't have them!

Room Tip: If you are in the nearest annex to the hotel and you can't stand whining humming machinery get...

We stayed two nights here and the rooms were clean and adequate but the structure of the hotel has no absorbent surfaces and so you here every noise - don't expect to sleep in!
The hotel is in a good position and you can walk into town. The staff are also helpful

The other reviews say it all. This is a very nice, clean hotel, and is good value. The room was small but very clean. There are excellent restaurants next door and across the street. Really, for the very reasonable price, we could not have asked for more in terms of the room.

If you want to book a tour to the waterfalls, go to one of the agents in town...half the price we were quoted at the hotel.
