“Our second visit, well worth the trip”

We were surprised that they did not open till 8AM, last time we got in at 7. The earlier the better, avoid the crowds and the day will still be cool by the time you finish. We had a great guide, fantastic with kids and never got tired of answering thousands of questions. Beautiful day, beautiful ruins and beautiful memories. Well worth the visit.

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2014

Five of us traveled by bus(many curves and topes) from San Cristobal to Palenque and it took 7 hours because of a blockade. The ruins are remarkable and it was well worth it. We hired Ernesto, an English speaking guide, for a walk through the jungle (where we saw more unexplored ruins) and through the ruins themselves. This place is not to be missed! The guide was especially helpful. Because we stayed the entire day, we became quite hungry and it's difficult to find a decent lunch without walking quite a ways. Take a sandwich! The museum is also spectacular. Many folks go for only a few hours, but for us, we needed the full day to take it all in.

“It is the Paris of the Maya”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014

We (there was six of us) booked a tour of Palenque through Maya Tours - which was a mistake. If I had it to do over again, I’d have just taken a cab. There is a taxi stand outside the gate of the site.
We were picked-up at our hotel, and driven to the site. There were two entrance fees - one to the preserve/park and one to the actual site (which included the museum). Outside the gate, we paid $85 (US) for a tour guide (tour length was to be two hours - although it went a bit longer than that). The lady was knowlegable, and her english was very good, but she was clearly on a schedule and toward the end of the time was impatient for us to move faster.
Palenque is a very large and park-like setting. It covers a valley and several hillsides. There is a lot of water flowing through the site, and (while we were there) significant humidity - which lent a kind of softening haze to the area.
Palenque is the type of site that divides a tour group. The casual tourist, stopping by to see a world historical site, could spend a happy two or three hours & move on. People who are more ‘into’ Mayan history & architecture could easily spend a happy two or three days here.
Do not skip the museum! It’s very interesting and has a great exhibit and explaination of the tomb.
Like the the other ‘big‘ or ‘very popular‘ Mayan sites (like Chichen Itza); Palenque has a large number of people selling trinkets in and around the site. Inside, the sellers are supposed to have some ancesteral Mayan connection, outside - who knows. Most of these trinkets appeared (to me) to be the same mass-produced items that could be found in shops all over at half the price. To me, it really distracts from the site. It would be one thing if they were selling hand crafted traditional peices - but, that is simply not the case.

“Half day at the Mayan ruins”

Amazing collection of buildings to see, hundreds of additional ones still submerged in the surrounding jungle. Go early to avoid the crowds and more importantly the heat!

“A must see site!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2014

Even if you are not a great Mayan ruin fan, the Palenque ruins are not to be missed. Really beautyful and interesting ruins in a wonderful tropical forest setting and a nice museum just outside the site itself. Unfortunately some of the main buidings are now closed for the public, and can not be climbed. But it's still worth the trip.
