“Amazing and luxurious place in the Mayan world”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2010

We loved our stay at Villa Mercedes, close to Palenque archeological site. The service was excellent, people were helpful and professional. Breakfast was also very nice and the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The nice touch was that they all had a hammock to relax just outside the room, which was a nice touch.

The hotel is located 10-15mins drive to Palenque City, but we spent most of the time at the archeological site, so it didn't matter that we were not located centrally. Palenque city is not a particularly nice town, so it's worth to spend most of the time at the Mayan site.

The hotel is modern but with a Mayan style and also a spa and a swimming pool, which we didn't use because it was raining but we would have done otherwise.

The rates are on the expensive side, but there is a good reason for that!

Hotel facilities are good, rooms pleasant, swimming pool excellent, dining room sadly like a canteen but a beautiful airy reception area. The staff are smiling and try to be helpful but don't know what they are doing. Mistakes with bills, orders, etc. and one evening we were disturbed in bed to ask why we hadn't paid our dinner bill (we'd signed it and were staying another night).
Train the management to train the employees and this will be a good hotel. As it is, we would not receommend it.

This is one of the newer hotels in Palenque and very much worth it. The rooms were great, although they could use some more lighting. The service was great and it's very close to the ruins. Palenque is hot- so the pool was wonderful. This is probably the priciest hotel in the area, but I got a decent rate from bestday.com.

Initially we wanted to stay at one of those cabanas (El Panchan, to be exact) which were cheaper. We also thought it would add on to the whole experience of staying in the "jungle". Our taxi driver took us there, and we found out that there were no vacancies. This is no surprise, as they are popular and the website does not allow any reservations in advanced.
Anyway, we were really glad we didn't stay there. Driving around the huts and accommodation in El Panchan really disgusted us. The surrounding "jungly" areas were dirty - we saw empty bottles and rubbish strewn everywhere. It didn't look hygenic at all.
We've stayed in backpacking hostels and camped before (so we're not snobs) but we know where to draw the line. El Panchan just wasn't the exotic place you'd imagine from reading the recommendations.

Back to this review - we drove around and finally came to VIlla Mercedes. It was beautiful, and of course, you get what you pay for. It's expensive, but hey, we figured we wanted a good rest before and after such a long day at the Palenque ruins.
The compound is resort-like, with 2-3 swimming pools. Our room was at the top, and it was spacious, clean, and very "mexican". Every room also has a hammock outside, so that's a plus! We had a great time there.

We didn't eat at the restaurant though. We were there for new year's eve, but opted out of the dinner. It looked pretty tacky and they were charging top dollar for the night (i guess it's like this everywhere on NY eve). So we went to Palenque town instead, and had a great time there, just mingling with the crowds and locals there.

Location-wise, it's great. It's situated on the way to the ruins, and is a short taxi ride away from town.

This place is very nice. It has a rustic but modern and clean design. The rooms resemble huts with thatched roofs and with a hammock outside each room.
The room was very spacious and clean with tile floors, a must in hot and humid weather. We didn't use the swimming pool but it looked very clean.
There are many trees in the property and they attract many birds, a beautiful sight! We even saw a flock of parrots early in the morning. For my surprise they didn't wake me up, with the AC on in the room you cannot hear a thing from outside.
Our only problem here was that the room service took a very long time but the food was good. We tried the restaurant for breakfast and it was very good also. I would recommend the "huevos motuleños".
