“Delicious local cuisine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2013

My husband and friends stayed at the Elsted Inn for two nights in October 2013. We ate at the restaurant our first night and were very pleased with our main dishes (venison, trio of lamb, and fish). We were supposed to go somewhere else the next night, but decided to eat again at the Elsted when we found out that they changed their menu on a daily basis. The second meal was even better than the first. The hosts kindly made a special appetizer plate that we could all share as a group, which was beautifully displayed. Most of us had the local pheasant with roasted vegetables. We wanted to try the pumpkin gnocchi, which didn't come with any of our chosen dishes but the hosts brought us out a special plate to share. They were fantastically indulgent. Finally, we ordered a three desserts to share: sticky toffee pudding, creme brulee and a fruit crisp. All of the desserts were superb!

“Delicious with great atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013

This gastro pub + inn is lovely, local and very welcoming. Malcom and Lisa go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your food and drink, and the pub has a great atmosphere of locals even on a wet autumn evening.

We both stayed and ate here. They were incredibly flexible about our arrival times, making sure to keep the kitchen open for us on Friday night. The food was so delicious, we cancelled our Saturday dinner reservations and ate there. Lisa, donning her pink chef coat, turned out lovely venison, sea bass, pumpkin gnocchi, pheasant, and all manner of locally sourced dishes.

Beers were excellent, wine list could be boosted a bit. Breakfast was absolutely delicious with superb, locally-roasted coffee.

Highly recommended, either for a meal or a country weekend. Well worth a drive to get there. A very well done, relaxing spot run by a lovely couple who genuinely care.

“This is a great little BnB.”

I arrived from the states to this local pub and had a most warm welcome from Malcomb and Lisa and delicious meals as well. I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 night stay and noticed the locals are very faithful and keep coming back.

Thank you Leah. It was a pleasure to have you. We so enjoyed meeting you and getting to know all about you and your travels. Besides it was really nice to have someone from "home" come and visit. Be well and we do hope our paths cross again in the future.
All The Best,

“A great welcome awaits”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 21, 2013

This pub is our local but we haven't been there to eat for years, lots of changes to landlords and poor reports on the food having kept us away. So having heard good reports since Malcolm and Lisa have been there, we went there for a birthday celebration at the weekend. Our guests stayed the night and said they were really comfortable and had a great night's sleep. The menu is a bit limited, usually a good sign that food will be freshly prepared. We all had the moules as a starter and although I normally prefer them cooked the traditional way, the addition of chorizo and leeks was delicious, as was the liquor, lots of crunchy bread to mop it up. The Rother Valley local meat is excellent and We were not disappointed with our steaks, beautifully cooked and served with a delicious sauce and a 'sprinkling' of chips but no other veg or a side salad. My husband and daughter in law had the fish cakes, my husband said were tasty but a bit on the dry side. We were too full to be tempted by the puds so cannot comment on those. All in all a very good meal, if a bit expensive, but the attention and friendliness of Lisa and Malcolm and their staff, couldn't be faulted.

“Sunday Lunch”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

On the trail of roast beef and Yorkshire pud we came upon the Elsted Inn. At 12.45 the bar was quite busy but the dining room considerably less so. One of us had beef, the other had lamb, both of which had excellent local credentials. The beef was very fatty but we were told that you can't see inside the cow and that we'd been given extra slices to compensate which was fair as it was indeed extremely fatty and not too easy to separate fat from meat. Overall, the meats, potatoes and Yorkshires were good, the vegetables were considerably less so, al dente in the extreme and served in tiny quantities indeed for 2 people.
I had a blackberry creme brulee for pud and my husband had two scoops of ice cream in the absence of a cheese option. The creme brulee had a very thick sugar crust, too thick really and the texture of the creme was not smooth enough, even allowing for the blackberries. The ice-cream was deemed to be nothing special.
Service was however attentive without being intrusive. Radio 2 in the background was actually quite pleasant which surprised me really but added to the home from home atmosphere that the owners seem to wish to create.
We came away feeling that this was overpriced for what we had. There are very much better places for Sunday roasts not far away, but I'm keeping them to myself and for you to discover!
