Visited to go for our usual steak, but as soon as we ant in it felt different, had to wait for time to get drinks , and didn't start food until 6.30 so we had to wait to order that , when it did come out it was only adequate and not the same standard as our 3 previous visits, also not as comfortable and felt that we were intruding between expecting service and interrupting conversations with the locals.

Menu does not change much here, very authentic pub, the food is okay. I had baked avocado but mediocre. Fish cakes were superb. My fellow diners had the lamb stew which they said was okay but sauce overpowered lamb flavour. Pub was quite quiet but our guest was very firmly told drinks could not be served he had to go to the bar and get his own. Bar can be quite crowded and hard to access. Very much a locals pub in a lovely spot.

We left this pub (The Three Horseshoes at Elsted) as they were not prepared to vary their set menu and indicated a “take it or leave it” attitude; so we left it. We also left a large group of friends who were still waiting for their ordered (and overpriced) food.
My partner could not eat anything remaining from the standard menu due to a medical condition and they were not prepared to vary it at all. We normally find that the Chef is consulted and a compromise is found, but not in this case, as they had a full bar anyway!
I suggested a very simple (for the Chef) alternative, including just a bowl of chips, but was told they do not do such things. They were pre-warned of our group visit, so they knew we were coming, but seemed to be struggling to keep up. A similar unwelcoming (unless you are a local) approach occurred on a previous visit but now, as it’s happened twice, we will not be returning. Shame as the beer was good and the pub is in a nice position. We then drove a couple of miles down the road to find The Elsted Inn where they just could not be more helpful and we had a wonderful meal there and spent the rest of the evening chatting to others in the bar. One regular visiting couple had a similar poor experience with abrupt bar staff at The Three Horseshoes that very lunchtime and like us, will never return. It’s not just us, is it?

A wonderful, out of the way location with fantastic views from the beautiful, and extensive, rose garden over the South Downs. The meals are really tasty and good value and the service is quick and the staff very friendly too.

We will certainly go again when next in the area and I am already looking forward to it!

We visited for my parents anniversary as a family of 6 including 2 children. Beautiful setting and lovely gardens with fab view. However, the food was very overpriced for what it was £16.50 for braised lamb that had about 6 cubes of lamb that was dried up around the edges. There are no children's menu so ended up paying £12.50 for a ham ploughmans for a 6 yr old! This could be an absolute stunning pub and restaurant but sadly, we were very disappointed and will not be returning.
