“Well impressed”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

We just happened upon this pub whilst heading back to where we were staying in nearby Greystoke and have to admit wasn't expecting too much. We opted to be seated in the bar so spliced out order at the bar and wasn't waiting overly long for fresh cooked food. And what food it was between us we ordered the steak and ale pie, lasagne and the burger. All arrived nicely presented and plenty of it. My dad declared the pie to be the 'best he's ever tasted', the steak burger with the works was good and just pink enough to be nice and tender Only the lasagne was disappointing with the texture of the meat resembling dog food as it seemed to be too finely minced but it tasted good. My only complaint would be the service. The pub wasn't busy and my daughter ordered a pudding and when it arrived the waitress just plonked it in the middle of the dirty plates and promptly left without clearing the table leaving us to rearrange the rather large plates to make room for the pudding. However I would return as the quality of the food outshone the service.

“Staff could be more helpful.”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

We visited for father's day after booking a table in the restaurant. We were disappointed to find a set menu as we had looked online and there was a very good choice, whereas the menu offered only had 6 options. My husband wanted a burger so ordered 2 from the kids menu, he then saw the bar menu which was a full menu and asked if he could order from that but was told no so he asked if he could just have a regular burger and was told that was fine! We enquired whether the roast beef was well done which the waitress didn't understand so we said is it pink and she replied not really (perhaps she could have checked and arranged for it to be cooked more if it was rare) it was fine when it arrived. The food was ok, plenty of veg to go round but no one came to check on us throughout the meal. We were offered the desert menu once we'd finished our mains but after waiting around 20 minutes for someone to return to take our order we decided not to bother, we would have also liked coffee so for a table of 9 they lost quite a lot of money on our order. We used to visit the Spotsman regularly but haven't been for a few years and won't be going again anytime soon. Disappointing for a special occasion.

“Great beer, shame about the service”
Reviewed June 11, 2014

Decided to try the sportsman out after hearing that it had great reviews about the food. Ordered two pints (cumberland and cocker hoop) which were kept in perfect condition by the landlord. We asked to be sat in the restaurant instead of the bar area, and were promptly shown to our table. The table hadn't been cleared down from the previous people as it had empty glasses left and looked as though it needed a wipe down. When food arrived it looked delicious, cooked to perfection, it's just a shame that the waitress threw the plates on the table before swiftly disappearing without asking if we needed anything else (sauces etc). When we were nearing the end of the meal it would appear the waiting on staff were trying to get out of there as fast as possible especially with customer interactions. We asked for the bill, paid and left. It would have been a lovely evening and maybe would have stayed for another pint if the poor service hadn't left a bad impression. We may return but I hope they have new staff.

“Sportsman Pub”
Reviewed June 8, 2014

We visited the pub twice for evening meals and the food and service were excellent. We would recommend anyone staying in the area to visit.

“Trip down memory lane.”
Reviewed June 1, 2014

Visited with my brother who lives close by. Had not been for many years due to living away and work commitments, but was delighted I went there. Food was well cooked and presented by friendly and helpful staff and had flavour which is often lacking in some pub food. Looking forward to going back when I next visit in August.
