“Good alternative to Rheged when closed”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

We hoped to pop into Rheged for a child-friendly dinner after turning off the M6. However, Rheged was closed (5:30pm), so an alternative was sought within easy reach of the A66. After a short drive, The Sportsman was chosen, visible from the road.

Arriving on a Sunday evening, it was clear that this was a warm pub, catered for families with small children and offered pretty decent fare. There was plenty of room for children to get up and stretch their legs; the staff were very friendly and efficient; and the steak burger excellent quality.

Definitely recommended if you had your sights set on Rheged in an evening, but miss it's suprisingly early closing time. The Sportsman Inn is also set in lovely, windswept scenery, so has plenty of character too.

“Excellent meal, great value!”
Reviewed April 5, 2014 via mobile

Booked for Mothers Day, special mothers day menu which was fantastic value for money £12.95 for two courses. Starters were fantastic and the majority of our party also had the roast beef, it was well done but still lovely and the veg was gorgeous. Kids meals were proper mini portions of adult food and they loved them. We had no issue with music, there were young girls serving but they worked hard in a busy restaurant and any issues we had they resolved after asking. Setting was lovely and all our party had a fantastic day, thank you. Would definitely go again.

“Very poor quality”
Reviewed April 4, 2014

Booked a table here for a Mothers Day family treat. Most of the party had roast beef. The beef was terrible, tough and tastless, very poor quality. The vegetables on the other hand were lovely, well presented and well cooked. Paying approx £10 for a plate of lovely vegetables was just a little over the top.
The restaurant itself blends into the public bar which is absolutely fine but you do not expect to have very loud modern music blaring out of the speakers in the restaurant when you are trying to relax and find it hard to hear conversation.
There was a handful of very young waitresses on duty who were all very pleasant and obviously needed some direction with the level of the music as when an older staff member came on duty she turned the music down, once she went into the kitchen they turned it back up!

“Excellent food great value for money”
Reviewed March 31, 2014

Called in on the off chance of a table. The barmaid was most helpful and found us a table in the dining room. The food we ordered was delivered promptly and was excellent. My wife ordered the fish and I had scampi - excellent. The deserts were outstanding. The meal and the service were excellent. The only complaint I had was that the portions were too big??

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed March 15, 2014 via mobile

Had a lovely evening at this pub.
Just called in with a friend and the food was beautiful!

All homemade and nice big portions.
There was a good choice on the menu which seemed to cater for everyone. Along with a good choice of drink behind the bar.

The service was very fast and staff were very pleasant and helpful. We sat in the bar area but the restaurant looked very nice also.
The pub had a lovely atmosphere and I would defiantly recommend it to both couples and family's.
