We hoped to pop into Rheged for a child-friendly dinner after turning off the M6. However, Rheged was closed (5:30pm), so an alternative was sought within easy reach of the A66. After a short drive, The Sportsman was chosen, visible from the road.
Arriving on a Sunday evening, it was clear that this was a warm pub, catered for families with small children and offered pretty decent fare. There was plenty of room for children to get up and stretch their legs; the staff were very friendly and efficient; and the steak burger excellent quality.
Definitely recommended if you had your sights set on Rheged in an evening, but miss it's suprisingly early closing time. The Sportsman Inn is also set in lovely, windswept scenery, so has plenty of character too.
