“Clean and Tidy”
Reviewed March 23, 2012

This is a country hotel with rooms and annex. We had a twin room in the annex. It was small with an ensuite. The rooms were clean and tidy. it was also nice and quiet. The welcome was warm. We had just cycled from Clyde. The food that came from the restaurant was very good value and the chips had to be among the best I have ever had. The crisp on the outside and fluffy inside - moorish. The welcome was laid back but people friendly and the proprietor talked with us in the morning checking what we thought of our stay. Note there is no cell phone reception.

Room Tip: It seems that the rooms in the annex are better. Apparently the walls in the hotel itself are paper...

The accommodation was full so we stayed at "The Old Bakery" just along the road as a one night on our Otago Central Rail Trail trip. Good pub grub and a very friendly host. The Old Bakery was an excellent alternative to staying here however our friends all enjoyed their stay here also. If you have time take a trip down to the old suspension bridge

We stayed at Blacks hotel for one night, during our ride on the Central Otago Rail Trail. Everything about Blacks hotel was fabulous. The accommodation is down the corridor from the main bar and dining room (which have both been beautifully renovated in keeping with th 1930s art deco design), and the bedrooms have obviously been recently renovated. Each room has a small but new and efficient ensuite. The beds were excellent (perhaps it was because we'd ridden all day, but no one had any complaints about sleeping) and I was pleased that a radio alarm clock was supplied. Our party of 8 had 4 rooms: 2 queen and 2 twin rooms, with one of the twin rooms being in the separate
"shearer's quarters" block just across the courtyard. The courtyard has a large deck with tables and umbrellas, perfect for an afternoon beer.
The bar area was very pleasant, with plenty of room for us and the locals. A large separate dining room caters for dinner and breakfast.
Dinner was very good. Extensive menu, ample portions and all enjoyed. Don't worry about there being no appetisers on the menu: you won't need them! We did start with garlic bread (about a loaf each when it came :-)) with a beer in the bar first. The chef is from Portugal and comes in the evening after cooking at a Dunstan winery at lunch. We could hardly refuse dessert when he came through during the main course and said that he'd just put some sticky date puddings in the oven...talk about upsell...but they were excellent! The meal was not cheap but given the size of the portions and quality of the food, we really couldn't complain. Good wine selection at very reasonable prices.
Ophir holds the record for NZ's lowest temperature (-21.6C) so we're planning to go back in winter for a completely different experience.
Guests can access the community swimming pool (100m down the road) for a gold coin donation - the teenage boys had 6 swims between them!

Room Tip: In the winter, ask for a room in the main building (internal access). In the summer (because it neve...
