“Secluded Luxury”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

We stayed two nights at Bush Sand and Sea and loved it. It's not too far from Auckland but certainly feels quite remote with the hills and bush of the Waitakeres on the doorstep. It really is like a treehouse. The accommodation is modern, clean, spacious, eco-friendly, and has everything - including a fully equipped kitchen & BBQ. We brought our own food from the supermarket which worked well.

The design is such that even though Lyn and Alan's house is just nearby, there is totally privacy and uninterrupted views down to the beach. The fresh baked bread and breakfast ingredients were great for us to eat at our leisure (saved some for lunch!). We had dinners on the deck surrounded by bush and evening birdsong - bliss! The spa was lovely in the evening too.

The walk down to the creek (all on their property) is well worth doing, especially at night with the glow worms, and though we didn't do the full walk to Bethell's beach we did drive down and walk up and down the beach - very few people, big surf, and cool caves to explore.

We got a discount through Wotif but would stay again at regular price because we felt it was definitely worth it. Hopefully we will be back soon!

Room Tip: Only one room - book well in advance!

The Bush Sand and Sea B & B has been the accommodation highlight of our trip so far. it's well worth the rate of $210 NZD because it is actually a very new, modern condo with all the latest in technology inside and outside - well it is like a tree house within the canopy of the forest on the ridge. Lyn Happy goes out of her way to make you feel welcome and then give you privacy for your whole stay. The condo comes complete with bedroom, bath, kitchen, dining, living room and a large deck on the east and the west side. It is so peaceful on the deck with only birdsong and the sound of the wind - perfect for yoga, reading, sunning & dining. In the distance you can see emerald green hillsides and the black sand of Bethell's beach. Stop at a grocers and wine shop before you arrive because you may not want to leave. There's a fully modern kitchen and BBQ; fast, reliable, complimentary internet: TV/DVD with a selection of DVDs/CDs; lots of interesting books to review and a very comfortable kingsized bed. Oh and air conditioning should you need it. We just opened windows and a cool cross draft kept us comfortable all night. Breakfast ingredients are in the fridge - I loved the chance to cook up breakfast on our own. Stay a couple nights here - you won't regret it.

We had three nights here - one with the bridesmaids to prepare and two as newly married husband and wife - the hosts are fantastic, the comfort is awesome and we felt so amazingly well taken care of - cannot recommend enough!

We had a wonderful 3 night stay here - a perfect start to married life. We couldn’t have wished for a nicer place to spend our honeymoon. Many thanks to our hosts for their hospitality and generosity - they were the perfect, providing provisions for a lovely breakfast but giving us plenty of space & privacy. We highly recommend this B&B for a quiet get-away.

My husband, son and I chose this place to stay in Auckland after reading about it on Trip Advisor. It was better than we could have ever imagined! The hospitality of Lyn and Alan was amazing and made us feel so welcome and at home right away. Their special place for guests is beautiful and well thought out. You are surrounded by the incredible beauty of the rainforest and the beautiful Waitekere Range. Lyn greeted us with the groceries I had requested before we arrived and much more...fresh apples, spinach, kiwis, jam, potatoes, yummy date bars, wine. It was wonderful to have such great food stocked for us after a 13 hour flight from San Francisco. Lyn and Alan also have a great hot tub out under the stars. Just let Lyn know when you want to use the spa and she and Alan will take the lid off for you and put it back on once you are done!
We took a lovely walk to the beach going through gorgeous rainforests. The beach has a cool cave to walk to and the scenery is breathtaking. It was a full day walking and exploring for us. Lyn and Alan even have glow worms behind their home that you can take a walk to. All in all it is a wonderfully, comforting retreat away from the city energy that I recommend to all so highly. You will not regret staying here. The hospitality of Lyn and Alan just can't be beat.
We had to leave in a hurry the morning of our departure and in the rush, I left a bracelet and my son left something he desperately had to have for school in Dunedin, Lyn and Alan made sure everything was delivered to us in the best and fastest way possible! Just amazing how helpful and kind they are.

A perfect place to stay and just the break that we needed. Most enjoyable, beautiful surroundings, great scenery and natural beauty. Very welcoming and generous hosts, who left us freshly baked and delicious food each day, more than we could eat. We loved the hot spa under the starry sky. Our stay wasn’t long enough, we hope to be back.
