“Suffolk surprise”
Reviewed June 18, 2013

My wife and I spent three nights here in early June. Once you have survived the terrifying entrance - on a blind bend of a fast road - you enter a different world, one of peace and serenity.
The building is magnificent, especially viewed from the entrance drive, and the grounds and gardens are stunning. We were made very welcome and taken to our room which was in an adjoining building (possibly once stables) This first floor room was vast! As well as a double bed which was about 8ft wide, there were two armchairs, a three seater settee, a chaise, dressing table, chest of drawers and two bedside tables. In addition to the bedroom there was a separate dressing room with a toilet and bathroom off. The windows looked out over formal gardens. The rooms were serviced twice a day. The bed was very comfortable and the room quiet and airy.
We had dinner in the hotel on the first and third nights. The food was to a very high standard and very well presented. The dining room staff though young were very professional and Gordon, the maitre d', had his finger on the pulse of the room the whole evening. The breakfasts were of the same high standard with a vast choice of food.
It is no criticism of the hotel but the water here is extremely 'hard' which made the tea scummy and revolting.
All the staff were polite, helpful and professional throughout our stay. The unusually late check time of midday was a pleasant surprise.

Were there any negatives? Just a couple: the car park is too small - with evening functions in the hotel it could be difficult to park within a comfortable distance of the building. The tea tray in the room comes with tea, coffee and mineral water but no biscuits.
My biggest complaint, however, is the floor covering in the bathroom and toilet. Carpet is never a good idea in these rooms even at home, but in a semi-public space such as a hotel it is positively disgusting. The carpet in our bathroom and toilet was revolting. Such a shame!

Room Tip: If stairs can be a problem, ask for a ground floor room. I saw no lift.

Stayed for 1 night while attending a conference locally.
Booked via a booking agency at a very reasonable rate.
certainly much better than a local premierlodge or hilton.
The hotel itself looks stunning, my room was very large and the bathroom equally as spacious.
Did not eat here except for breakfast which was delicious.
I saw a few comments about water pressure being an issue. not in my room, the shower was hot and very powerful.
this is a very charming retreat which should not disappoint anyone. Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
The only detractions i can think of was the leisure club was shut, undergoing refurb, and the toilet seat was loose.
Overall, if you can get this at a discount, TRY IT.

Room Tip: My room was Pavillion. Was large, clean, comfortable and very quiet.

Just enjoyed a one night stay at Hintlesham Hall for my birthday. It is the 2nd time we have stayed here, the first being on our wedding night 21 years ago!. we had the Queen Anne Suite, which had 3 rooms, a lounge, bedroom with a huge bed and a fantastic bathroom. The service was brilliant. We walked to the pub up the road and had a brilliant meal, but breakfast in the hotel this morning was A1. The surroundings helped. Beautiful rooms full of paintings and beautiful things. we enjoyed a lovely walk in the grounds this morning. Can't wait to go back!! I just want to know who was in the helicopter who stayed last night and left this morning!!

This is the second time that we have stayed at this hotel. This time we stayed in an upgraded room called Ravilious which was located at the top of the building overlooking the rear garden. The room was superb as was the Heart of Oak room which was located on the same floor. This bedroom had a fantastic four poster bed which was occupied by another family member.

Everything was of a very high standard and we were able to relax in this very quiet location. Our private dinner function went without any hitch even though we made alterations at the last minute. The staff were superb and very attentive. It is very hard to give any negative comments because everything was perfect. We look forward to our next visit.

Our stay at this hotel was excellent. We had a superior room which certainly lived up to expectations.
Gallons of hot water for both the enormous shower & lovely bath. Good quality linen, products, robes.
We expected a very high standard of food & we certainly weren't disappointed. The service was impeccable from the reception staff, dining staff, accommodation staff & bar.
There are a number of things in the room which some people have commented on (sash windows no longer closing completely etc) but for us this all added to the charm of the building.
The history & character of the Hall is wonderful, adding to the quality of the experience.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Hintlesham Hall to anyone.

Room Tip: We booked through Secret Escapes and had a 70% discount, excellent value for such a prestigious hote...

We had booked a 2 night stay in July but, due to unforeseen circumstances, would have been unable to travel. The Reception Manager very kindly helped by allowing us a 2 night stay at short notice. We are in the hotel on our second day and utilising the excellent wi fi connection in the comfort of our lovely room. All rooms are named and we are in Maypole which is situated in the block a few yards away from the main house.

The room is very spacious with an extremely comfy bed, a sitting area and good heating - it may be flaming June but it has been pretty cool and overcast these last couple of days. The room was twice the size of a standard hotel room. Large bathroom with White Company toiletries. Complimentary water with good tea & coffee facilities.

We ate in the beautiful restaurant last night and will be doing so again tonight. I had one of the best ever sirloin steaks - cooked to perfection. Five star silver service by excellent staff - attentive without being overpowering. We enjoyed this very traditional dining experience but it was clear that some patrons were not used to this sort of service. OK the service was not fast, which many people expect these days, but the food was of excellent quality and freshly prepared by talented chefs. This is not chef and brewer microwaved or fried food.

The hotel has an interesting history and it is worth a good look around as if you hzve gone to a National Trust property. Some lovely rooms to sit and ponder what might have happened in there hundreds of years before.

Breakfast was OK but not outstanding and did not match the experience we had last night. There is a continental buffet and you can order your hot breakfast which is served to you. Fresh fruit salad was a bit lacking in variety, probably not helped by one woman taking out all the strawberries and similar fruits! Very good coffee is served at breakfast too. Would have liked dry-cured bacon rather than the mass produced back bacon but it was OK!

We will come back to this hotel and will recommend to friends. Perhaps another steak tonight!

Room Tip: Go for the superior room.

The hotel is an Elizabethan manor house with lots of period features and exposed beams etc. We stayed in a superior room which was tastfully decorated and clean. The shower let the room down as there was little water pressure . The bed was very comfortable and spacious ( my wife likes her own space ) The staff were very attentive and looked after your needs very efficiently and pleasantly .We ate from the table d'hote menu on the first night and the a-la-carte menu on the second night, the food was well cooked and presented on both nights, although the desert was a little dissapointing a small slice of vaguely mint flavoured tart with a miniscule blob of chocolate sauce . If you are into golf the golf course is very close to the hotel. The matyre gardens are well kept and worth a walk around. The bacon and mushrooms on the breakfast were not of very good quality.

Room Tip: Corner suites are light and spacious. If your room is at the end of a corridor you get less disturba...
