You do not go to a lodge next to a rainforest expecting 5 star luxury! If you do, you only fool yourself. Undo yourself- forget about wi-fi, TV or other superfluous wants for a day or two and enjoy the majestic presence of nature! The Blue Magpie Lodge located with such proximity to Sinharaja must only be viewed in its context. I stayed there for a day with a friend in late March 2013 and found it very adequate: the rooms were clean, beds comfortable and the service was excellent. The charges could have been a bit lower. However, the manager Mr. Arun and his younger assistant took a special care to ensure our comfort. They were very friendly and hospitable. The dinner we had was delicious! The following day we were up at 6 am to set off for the day and a very good breakfast was waiting for us. Arun suggested that we took a bath in the stream nearby later during the day. What an excellent idea that was! Will go there again.

"Sinharaja is indescribably beautiful." That is what we said when we arrived and that is what we said when we left. There is nothing particularly positive that can be said about the Blue Magpie Lodge. Apart from the fact that the staff were all very welcoming and cheerful. But that is it. There is no constant electricity. The generator is switched on for a couple of hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening. Sometimes there is hot water. Sometimes there isn't. The 10.00pm electricity curfew means that reading in bed is not an option. The compulsory darkness has a prison camp quality to it. Though sheets and towels are clean, overall there is something distinctly grubby about the place. Food? Ok. Though the meal on the second night bore more than a passing resemblance to that on the first night - soup spun out with some scrap additions. I love the Sri Lankan pancake-like hoppers for breakfast, but these were pre-cooked and cold, the fried egg congealing in the centre. What was very confusing, given their proximity to the forest, is that the manager could not tell me precisely the cost of admission to the forest. What was even more confusing is, that when I asked about the notorious leech issue of Sinharaja, the manager laughed it off. However, when I returned and undressed for a shower after the visit to the forest, I found my right leg and foot were covered in blood, having been guzzled by leeches! But what was shocking was that the Blue Magpie Lodge did not have a first aid box!!!! Our driver had to whizz into the neighbouring village for antiseptic ointment and plasters. This should not have been his responsibility. As we later found out the hotel had a supply of special anti-leech socks. We saw some guests being provided with them. Why weren't we? I hate writing reviews, which are simply a string of negatives, but - in this case - that is all I can muster. Frankly a bit of a dump, a glorified (but not glorified enough) youth hostel - and way over priced for what it offers. Look for other options in the area.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else!

While driving up to the blue magpie lodge, we realised that we could not be very far from the end of the world :) the lodge in the middle of dense foliage and next to a gentle stream might be anything but luxurious, but it gives you this great outback feeling and you simply feel close to nature by staying there. The food is excellent, as is the service and the manager, when the ice is melted ( he needs a short moment), does anything to please you. We were truly spoilt up to the point that the entire staff got up to wave us off at 4h in the morning! Also our table was particularly nicely decorated for our farrwell dinner just because they liked us... It's possible to take a bath in the river and hiking in the forest is quite nice. And yes, electricity only works from 6pm to 10pm. It adds to the allure of being out in the forest and anyhow, it can be negotiated ;)

Good location near entrance of Rainforest, but extremely basic with electricity only available 5:00-7:00am and 6:00-10:00 pm, no wifi, poor mobile connection, credit cards not possible.
Rooms poorly maintained and very humid, obviously no airconditioning nor ventilator in absence of electricity. Very friendly staff and food served thru a very basic but healthy buffet. Beer is very good ...like elsewhere.Small place, I guess only +/- 16 huts available.
Also along the road you can have an interesting walk.
The views and walk thru rainforest does compensate all, but perhaps it could be scheduled with only 1 night in stead of 2.

Room Tip: Just enjoy the park and accept for a moment the hardship of the rooms

The rooms here are very basic but comfortable. The electricity is only on 6-10pm and 5-6am so remember to take a torch. The staff are so friendly and helpful, they genuinely want to please, nothing is too much trouble for them. The food is some of the best we tasted in Sri Lanka, homecooked and very fresh. This lodge makes a superb base if you are visiting the rainforest, but do purchase leech socks ( available from the lodge).

We enjoyed our stay at the Blue Magpie. It is a basic but comfortable and friendly place. It is a nice place to relax and have a pot of tea or a beer after tramping about the rain forest. It has a fine view from the restaurant and form the verandas in front of the rooms. The food is quite tasty.
The only problem with the Blue Magpie is that it is often used by tour groups. Sometimes it is difficult to book a room as a result. Also the group takes over the place and a very different feeling sets in. We were not too happy when a huge tour bus parked right in front of our room and blocked our view.
Thandula Jayarante is a neighbor of the Blue Magpie. He is the best birding and naturalist guide in Sinharaja. He can be booked through the Blue Magpie. His knowledge of the rain forest environment is quite exceptional and he is great company.
