“Great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2013

We stayed at The Commercial for 5 nights in August. It's located in a lovely square and is a great base to explore Cornwall. Staff were friendly, welcoming & attentive. We had a front 1st floor bedroom overlooking the Square. Room was adequate & comfortable. It was quite spacious for a double (in ours there was an additional single bed that got in our way really & was not needed, we would have preferred a room without) and clean. Overall we thought the hotel would really benefit from a refurb/ makeover. Decor was tired and this was shame as lovely building & potential. Pleasant breakfast room and great breakfasts. Lots of choice for cooked breakfast and done extremely well. There could have been options & choice on the 'help yourself table' but selections were adequate. We had a meal in the dining room one night and was very impressed. Lovely atmosphere & food. We would certainly look in again . . . .

Room Tip: Front rooms can be moisy but have the best view of St Just

Thank you for leaving us your comments. The Commercial is an early 19th century coaching inn so as you can imagine there are always areas in need of a change or things to be renewed. In our opinion these things have to be done with a sympathetic eye on the age and style of the building. Last year we put a completely new bathroom in 4 of our 11 bedrooms (your room was one of them) and we completely redecorated several others. This Winter we have plans to refurbish 4 more en-suites, redecorate 4 rooms and possibly our public bar area as well if funds allow! In the last 3 years, we have completely revamped our Lounge/reception area, the conservatory dining room, the patio/garden, re-painted the outside of the building and replaced 3 hardwood sash windows; so we do indeed try to keep our standards high to please our guests and customers alike. This is by no means an easy task but we try our very best.

We stayed for one night in September and found the hotel to be well managed, clean and very friendly. We were shown to our room which was on the first floor. It was very nice, and a decent size. Facilities available at the Hotel were quiet room, or garden, to sit, sports channels available in the bar, formal and informal restaurant settings. We had dinner, which was very good and competitively priced. As we were going to the Scilly Isles the following morning, we thought we would be leaving too early for breakfast. This, though, was no problem for the hotel who were more than happy to prepare breakfast earlier for us or offered us the alternative of a packed lunch. We had the breakfast which was also very good.

All in all, a very good stay.

Thank you for leaving us a review. Being in such close proximity to the Land's End airport link to the Scilly Isles makes us an ideal stopover point for travellers to the islands; so we try our best to accommodate all their needs.

The location is really good, in the centre of St. Just town. The Cape Cornwall is just 7mins away, My wife and me can go to visit it in the morning just before 8am breakfast. The hotel is not far away from Land's end neither. Our trip in South England is three days. This hotel is our first night, 89 pounds, the second night is not far from Plymouth, where is also 99 pounds, the last one is a Hilton hotel in Bristol city centre, only 65 pounds. These three hotels are all four-star. But only the commercial is a bit far away form my 4-star standard. The other two rooms are modern, well-equipped, large flat TV set. In The Commercial, the TV channels are not tuned yet after digital tv signal coverage. I think the owner needs to spend some money on the room fittings, then achieve 4-star standard. The hotel food is nice, service is good. P.S. All the waitresses for dinner and breakfast all super beautiful!

Firstly, we would very much like to point out that the Commercial is an inn and not a hotel and we are accredited with 4 star inn/guest accommodation by VisitBritain. This accreditation is renewed annually and so we have to meet the standards set in order to retain our 4 star guest rating. There are quite considerable differences in hotel and inn accreditation levels and people would be wise to look these up and then manage their expectations accordingly. There is currently only one 4 star hotel in West Cornwall and their rooms are almost double the price of ours.
Secondly, all of our rooms have flat screen TVs that ARE all tuned in to the digital service. What this guest does not realise is that the signal in our part of the country does not allow us to pick as many digital channels as in other parts of the UK. Had the gentleman queried this during his stay we could have put his mind at rest re his television worries!
Thirdly, the Commercial is a former coaching inn built in the early 1800s and consequently our rooms are not styled in the corporate fashion favoured by the ubiquitous hotel chains. Instead, we prefer to give them a little more character and individuality. Granted this will not please everyone, but that is the nature of our business.
Finally, we would like to thank you for your appreciation of the good food and service that we provide. Although we're not sure your wife will have shared your enthusiasm for the talents of our waitresses!

We stayed as a couple for two nights at The Commercial. The service was personal and friendly but not intrusive and the co-owner/manager (Paul) was very helpful in taking time to explain the local attractions and how to manage our relatively short stay to get the most out of it.

The room was en-suite, small but very clean and comfortable, Breakfast had a good choice and the dinner comprised of the freshest ingredients.

Highly recommend this hotel for its amenability, service and location. St Just is well situated for Cape Cornwall (beautiful and bleak) and then the subsequent walk to Lands End.

Thank you for your great comments. We have rooms of varying sizes some with family sized bathrooms and others with en-suites. We love where we live and Paul loves to help people make the most of it all.

I stayed here for one night in May 2013 and couldn't have been happier with the service. We were looking for somewhere cheap yet lovely to stay while see a show at the Minack Theatre, and The Commercial lived up to the expectation. We were welcomed by the friendly staff and given a short tour of the facilites before being shown up to our room on the top floor. The staircase is quite steep and rickety the higher you get but we found it charming. There are only 3 floors and we were in a lovely twin room overlooking the village center. The shower and toilet were concealed behind a sliding door and the sink was in the corner of the bedroom near the tea/coffee making facilities. If you're looking for modern luxury this isn't the place for you, but if you're after a quaint home-from-home feel this is definitely the spot! The beds were amazingly comfortable with fresh, soft linens and towels were provided along with shampoos, conditioners and a range of body washes.

The complimentary breakfast was wonderful with a buffet of cereals, fruit salad and juices, cooked breakfasts were made to order and the tea and coffee was endless.

I definitely hope to stay here again and have been recommending to all my friends and family.

Thank you for your great review. We have plans to refurbish the en-suite in this room this Winter and have just recently purchased new furniture to go with the new beds we put in here last Winter. It is good to see that these little changes we are continually making are appreciated by our guests. Thank you again and we will look forward to welcoming you back to the Commercial.

Stayed here for 2 nights in February and will definitely be back. Very friendly staff, comfortable rooms and a good choice at breakfast makes this a wonderful getaway. We didn't eat in the on site restaurant but menu looked good. It's in a good location to explore which is what we did, close to st micheals mount, lands end, minack theatre, sennen cove and much more.

The long weekend we spent at The Commercial marked Shirley's 50 years running the hotel, nowadays with her son Paul & daughter Michelle. Their experience was evident in the way the staff managed a private party, a barbeque and all the normal restaurant and bar functions without any apparent problems. As others have attested, the mainly young hotel staff are very friendly and helpful and the location in the main square is ideal. There is plenty of free parking just down the road and the hotel also owns the Premier shop next door that caters for newspapers and most else besides. Breakfast was excellent and the restaurant menu was varied, used local produce and was very good value.

Room Tip: We had Room 11 which overlooked the conservatory & was very quiet. It had a single as well as a...
