“Lac Du Chalain - Wooden Chalets”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

We have just returned from 11 nights here and WOW!. Lovely site with great shops , facilities and the lake is superb. We have 2 daughters aged 3 & 7 who loved it. To have the choice of the pool area with its multiple pools and slides with a vast array of playground equipment vs the lake with pedlo's and our purchased on site inflatables was enough to keep them ammused all day. Swimming in the freshwater lake is wonderful and with a lifegaurded zone everyone's very safe.

There are several playgrounds around the site, the carrousel, pony trecks, cycle hire and that just for the adults !

The wooden chalet hire booked on the direct website was superb. Very clean and well equiped , even with a dishwasher and gas BBQ. This worked out far cheaper than Keycamp's caravans.

The weather can be variable, and we experinced the 40 degrees contstant sun for the first part of our stay to the torential rain on our last day mixed in with a few thunderstorms, but the indoor swimming pool can into its own that day. Supprisingly not packed out with campers.

The trip from the euro-tunnel crossing takes about 6 hours of driving and we added in a few stops for refreshments so allow about 7.5 hours, but these days with DVD players etc it was no trouble.

My only problem now is finding another site as good as this one for next year .Any ideas ?

We stayed at the domaine de chalain mid August as a family of 4 with 2 boys aged 3 and 4. There were plenty of activities to keep us occupied on site including water sports, cycle hire, the waterpark, children's play parks, and a circus
even visited for one night. The bakery was excellent and the shop was fairly well stocked. The toilets and shower facilities were very basic but fairly clean, it is these facilities that let the site down. Camping pitches were of good size. The site got very busy during the weekend and we felt the need to leave and visit the rest of the surrounding area - the cascades de herrisson were impressive. The onsite water park was really good when not too busy, it got very busy during the late afternoon particularly during the weekend.

A must during anyone's stay should be to walk up into Fontenu and sample the farmhouse ice cream!

In summary, a pleasant stay and we would definitely return.

Stayed for 2 weeks in July/Aug 2012. This is a large site with lots of facilities. It is right on the side of Lac de Chalain which is lovely for swimming, splashing and paddling about on lilos or inflatables. The site has loads to do - on-site animation/club, swimming complex, tennis, high-ropes course in the forest, minigolf, segway and bike hire, hiking/running/cycling trails from the site etc etc. Swimming pools v nice and varied, though the slides are quite tame and it can get busy as it is also open to public. We preferred - and really enjoyed - swimming in the lake.
Good on-site shop and bakery. We only tried the on-site restaurant once and thought it was pretty mediocre. Nearby village of Doucier is about 3km and has a few shops and restaurants - we ate at Le Pic Vert which was good. Good choice of supermarkets and restaurants a bit further away in Champagnole (about 20km from the site).
Loads to do in the region - hiking, waterfalls, canoeing, wine and cheese tasting, trips into the mountains etc. We were lucky and had 2 weeks of sunny warm weather.
Stayed in a Canvas mobile home towards the top/back end of the site which we liked as the pitch was large, lots of space between the mobiles for the kids to play. Some of the mobiles nearer the centre of the site are quite close together. I reckon Canvas had the best pitches, then Eurocamp 2nd, but the Keycamp ones really did look quite packed in together. Best to ask for a pitch with space, or towards back of site, if you want that space and don't want to look at the white wall of the next mobile from your windows. All the tents seemed to have quite good pitches though. This is a big site so be prepared for a bit of walking. But its all spread out nicely and there's lots of trees so it doesn't feel oppressively large. And - for British visitors - be prepared to practice your "Dank je vel" and "Goede morgen" - this site is v v popular with Dutch holidaymakers, who are clearly on to a good thing here.

We have had 3 holidays here now and this year wanted to try somewhere different, but after endless searching and debating, we are ending up back in Chalain again! The absolute highlight of this site is the lake, on the drive into the site you are greeted by this bright aqua lake peeping out between the trees and it literally took our breath away, the location is simply stunning. In good weather you never have to leave the site because there is so much to do on the lakeside be it swimming, kyaking, canoeing, pedaloeing, fishing, paddling, there is even a Go Ape type activity in the trees near the lake and you can take a zip wire over the lake onto a pontoon so makes for a very active but cheap holiday. The kids love the lake and we literally have to drag them out on a night or for food! The lake is clear and much much warmer than the pool complex which we never bother with.

The site for us ticks every box, its immaculately clean, toilets facilities are great (but Brits please note no toilet seats here, but i kind of like it like that, they are so much cleaner, they are thoroughly jetwashed and disinfectanted 3 times a day, ample hot water and washing up areas. There are plenty of playgrounds throughout the site, lots of kids activities in the high season which is when we go, id recommend trips out to local market at Lons le Sonier and the family canoeing trip were all excellent value and very worth while.

There is a bakery on site which you wake up to the smell of the baguettes and croissants baking, go early as the cue can be big, but soon goes down, there is a butchers, a fromangerie, newsagents, gift shop, newspaper shop and a lakeside store selling everything you could ever need for the lake, it isnt too expensive and we bought most of our gear here. Nearby in Clairvaux le lac, is an Aldi which is even cheaper than the UK, we got a weeks shop including wine, larger and fresh produce for 70.00 to feed 10, brilliant little find, over the road is a large french supermarket with petrol station, a bit like our tescos sells clothes and that too, worthwile having a browse.

All in all we absolutely LOVE it here, we go with another 2 familes who have camped in France for 18 and 11 years respectively, they said they have not seen a better site for the price.

The only 2 downsides for me : Its a right trek from Calais without a stop, we travel down from Newcastle so its a hike even to Dover for us : ( so id recommend a stop over in Reims , cheap and cheerful but does the job
The other thing which could be a negative is the weather. The first year we went we had wall to wall sun with a few little showers, temps got up to 42 oc. The second year we came it absolutely poured down 10 days out of 14, it did take the shine (pardon the pun) off the holiday but we hadnt gone prepared as the first year was so hot, this year we are taking macs and wellies and a fleece each and even if it does rain its never cold so we will be out and about exploring the area which is beautiful.

All in all then a fantastic site for familes with kids of every age, friendly staff, great facilities, stunning location, we would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: If you are taking your own tent book direct with Chalain, dont go with Eurocamp, Keycamp or main bro...

Spent 8 days here in July 2011 with a 3 and 9 year old. Quite a large camp but didnt find it very personal unlike other sites in France. The main problem was the weather which was terrible so may affect my views on the site. The lake when the sun is out is lovely but the pool area was a little dissapointing and the slides were only slightly scary for the 3 yr old.We felt that the site up the lake was nicer when we biked there.

We are a family of 4 with a 4 year old and an 8 year old, We stayed in a supertent on this complex a super tent had 2 bedrooms and a ample sized longe/kitchen area it came fully equipped with utensils etc and you had your own little pitch outside you had a little BBQ, table and chairs, we did have to pay extra for the bedding which you did when you booked. The camp it self was a good size based around a big lake where you could fish and swim. The camp has a mixture of tents, caravans, wooden houses with various different agencies. Lots of toliet and shower blocks around but the toliets didnt have toliet seats. On the camp it had an indoor and outdoor pool, 1 pub, 1 resturant which was pricey 12 euros for a salad. Various shops icecream, local grocery shop, bread shop not everything was open as we went in June. Only thing that was a disapointment was there was no indoor play area so when it rains there was no where to go for children we went for day trips out when it was raining because there was nothing else to do on the camp. All in all we had a good quiet relaxing holiday but wouldnt return.
