I did a motorcycle trip following the Vaal river from Parys to the Bloemhof dam on the 1st of January 2014. The goal was to try and get to the Kalahari. I arrived at Die Voordeur in 35 degrees Northern Cape heat. I was met by the owner, Tienus Coetzer, who spotted my severe state of dehydration and rectified it immediately with drinks served from frozen glasses. That was the beginning of an excellent service experience in this beautiful oasis in Jan Kempdorp. It has magnificent gardens, and a lovely pool. The rooms are all en-suite, tastefully decorated and have wonderful air conditioning. The heat wave prevented any further travels into the Kalahari, and on Tienus's advice I spent the next day at the guest house, relaxing, eating great food, sleeping and enjoying the very efficient aircon in my room. I headed back to Johannesburg the next day, well rested and fed, and no longer dehydrated! I will most certainly return when I am once again in the area.
